Communication Masterclass: thethinkschool.com/checkouts/...
VIDEO INTRODUCTION:
On 8th May 2022, the govt of India launched a pilot phase of something called the Open Network for Digital Commerce(ONDC), which is a freely accessible online system for traders and consumers. and the reason why this is very very important is because the govt intends to breakdown the digital monopolies and Duopolies of Giant tech companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Zomato and other companies!! On one side, while a legend like Nandan Nilkani is associated with it, on the other side, Anand Mahindra himself had all praises for the ONDC initiative, this is expected to be as revolutionary as UPI itself!! So keeping aside all the hype, in this episode today,
Let's try to understand What are the major problems in the market that promoted the govt to launch the Open network for Digital commerce?
How will it promote small sellers and businesses against the giant companies in the market???
and what are the most difficult hurdles that could turn this very same initiative into a flop project??

there is always skepticism about new things from industrial revolution to ai. npci through upi and rupay has indeed ended payment duopoly of mastercard and visa in india additionally it also facilitated new startups like paytm mojo razor pay etc to conduct transactions easier. ondc will sure bring an environment for newer startups to thrive on.

@@venkipondi62 When a Government sponsors an Open Network (Which only it can), it supports the fabric. Your are right that on an Open Network the best provider wins. Whether it is a super aggregator, that is a business for profit, or a smaller participant who is incentivized and motivated to become better vis a vis a super aggregator. There will be providers who would not be able to survive. Yes. This is the true nature of what is about to come.

Thank you for explaining so beautifully. Actually Indian retail industry contributes a significant portion of the country's economy, accounting for around 8% of employment and 30% of the country's GDP (IBEF, 2022; Technopak, 2020) but mostly dominated by unorganized retail 88% in 2020-21. Organized players has failed to drive out these small retailers because of three reasons specially in India; First is rapid urbanization, secondly high density and third is the dramatic income differences between poor and rich. Day by day the gap is increasing. Now E-commerce is trying to monopolize the market but I think that they will not able to do that much destruction because most of the zen Z and millennials are high adoptor of technology (around 52%). Rest of the people stills wants the old way of personalized service, human touch, fear of online transactions etc. On the other hand 60% of people are Buttom of the Pyramid (BOP) consumers. They need these small stores to survive with relationship credits and smaller packages for mere daily necessary items. It will be a disaster if these traditional channels disappears. Governments has taken much steps to prevent it till date like banning FDIs in several sections. Now coming with ONDC is a great initiative but your points are extremely valid and important. Proper research should be there before implementing. It is interesting to see how these dynamics play in the long run for betterment of us, the average Indian consumers. I am currently doing research on this topic. Feel free to contact me if you need any information.

There was a Paytm market place where we could order directly from small retailers, but the service was very poor like packaging, product quality, etc. Also, getting the product replaced was a major problem. ONDC will face this challenge and people would opt for big players like Amazon, Flipkart for the service quality and assurance they provide.

The key is service. No questions asked returns, immediate resolutions, timely delivery, protecting the customer is what Amazon & Flipkart got right. Unless the new platform gets this right, it is bound to fail. Leave it to the retailers and they will take the customer for a ride. Drafting customer protection policies and ensuring that it gets implemented will be key. People usually do not mind paying slightly more for protection/safety.

Logistics solution I will like to point out... The logistics prblm can be solved by integrating local delivery partners and making them the king of their particular own territory of 3-4kms the best example is paper n parcel of mumbai and how they operate with the Dabbawalas. But by keeping the big logistics partners out to some extent.

The biggest concern shall be quality of service. From Payments to Packaging, Delivery, Return and replacement Policy. Amazon specifically uses a lot of AI and robotics to make the delivery mechanism efficient. Doubt how much intelligence ONDC will use. Competition is always make things better for Consumers. So it's a welcome move.

The state-run comparison site has overwhelmingly more advantages than disadvantages. Here are two solutions for two possible problems: 1. The Indian government must pass a law that forces companies to price their products on the basis of ‘Cost+Profit’: this will prohibit big players form selling unprofitable products in order to drive out small competitors, then dominate the market and massively increase prices. 2. The Indian government must pass a law that forces app and websites to have a ‘Filter’ feature: this way a user chooses what comes first and not the provider. Respect from Macca 🤷‍♂️♥️🇸🇦 Also, I think a new class of retailers will be born. They will be above scammers and below Amazon and Walmart. Their advantage is that they will have prices and quality above scammers and below Amazon and Walmart. Their disadvantage will be their inability to serve huge customers and quality inconsistency. This happens becuase they are a one-man entity. This class is unable to kill Amazon and Walmart but will carve out the biggest share of the Indian retail market.

@@KBS_ar The reality being India already has a Competition Act and Competition Commission of India in order to prevent such predatory pricing by the big players that cause harm to the local industries. However, the principal problem with this is the fact that it becomes really difficult for anyone to prove the direct problems caused by such predatory pricing because the impact is not correlated on a one-to-one basis. Further more, even if such impact is quantifiable, the current state and efficiency of the judiciary means that the small business owners who actually are hurt by these strategies will never have sufficient sustained cash flows to fight out the big players. This is one of the things that government must solve. ONDC is an absolutely brilliant initiative that if implemented right can catapult India ahead of the rest of the world in this space.

While I can almost see the Alibaba or Aliexpress influence in this, my biggest worry about this is the amount of Fraud that's going to be flooded in the market. In Amazon or Flipkart, its pretty easy to get a return or refund. But knowing how people are in my country, they are going to figure out a way to circumvent around this as we love contrived conveniences. So unless this platform can match the safety and customer protection conveniences offered by Amazon or Flipkart, I'm afraid that its going to fail.

Although, the idea sounds great at first. It is a total bummer when you look at the details. Here's what I think it will face problems in(opinion of a seller)- 1. Protection to buyers- platforms like amazon and Flipkart have strict policies to ensure it. With multiple platforms involved, who would take the responsibility. 2. Protection to seller- sometimes wrong returns are delivered due to mixup of packages or wrong product provided at the time of return by the customer. I can just raise a safe-t claim on Amazon and get compensation. But in ONDC,Who would pay? 3. Customer service 4. Courier returns- platforms cover the cost for packages that get cancelled in the transit. This would be impossible to impose in ONDC. 5. Customer returns- Right now, platforms allow which return request will be allowed or rejected. But with no skin in the game, platforms would allow people to raise return for the silliest of reasons. Resulting in just massive loss for the seller. Moral of the story- e-commerce is very different from payments and I cringe everytime I see people compare the both.

What is "Unethical Data"? Why shouldn't a company that has hired talent all around the world to become competitive in every country gather data on its customers to provide them with better services while earning a profit? Data is for everybody. Today it is being exploited by tech giants like Amazon and Flipkart. Maybe in the future every shop will gather data on its customers, give targeted messages to the customers phones and even gather data through a spyware app installed within their customer smartphones that is approved by the customer itself. In the past, when every person in the neighborhood knew the preferences, activities and personal life of every other person in that area, nobody would mind. Now one small bit of data is stored in a data center about a harmless ad click and everyone loses their minds. You want to protect your privacy, get VPN. The vast majority gives a rat's ass about privacy because it saves time to search for things they want.
@theysisossenthime
@theysisossenthime 2 года назад
@@Fastest_Animal Unethically sourced, used, or sold data is a problem that cannot be solved via VPN. Neither I nor this video are talking about data privacy - that is an different topic entirely. This is a hard topic to conceptualize. Buying from a seller like Amazon can seem like a good thing to a consumer. As demonstrated in this video we watched, Amazon was able to provide a platform for businesses to get sales that they otherwise probably wouldn't without using the platform. But by using the platform, Amazon figures out where the consumer money in that industry is spent. Then Amazon is able to put small to medium sized businesses out of business by capitalizing on that sweet spot and their economies of scale. Over short periods, this may save consumers money. Certainly a good thing, right? But over long periods, it tends to create monopolistic environments where a company like Amazon can start raising prices in industries that they've gained control of on their platform. This may not only cause price inflation to consumers, but it tends to stagnate innovation. So product improvements slow down because it is not required to drive sales. In other ares of human society, like many governments around the world, this type of behavior would be considered a conflict of interest, unethical. Depending on the government, this could be a cause for dismissal or even criminal action. The difficulty we have here though is not inherently the act of collecting data nor the act of offering similar products at lower costs. These are important pillars of most economic systems. The challenge with legislating data, compared to a conflict of interest in government, is that it is hard to write legislation that doesn't hamper ethically sourced, used, and so on data that does drive innovation, improve society, and make our world better. I like the solution that was presented in this video because it bypasses having to write incredibly difficult legislation and empowers consumers to make their own personal decisions on purchases while also mitigating the monopolistic impacts of platforms like Amazon. I don't want to see Amazon (and other platform giants) go out of business, I just want to see them fairly compete with small to medium sized businesses as well. The barriers to entry for industries around the world seem to be rising faster than wages. If our societies can take action to lower the barriers of entry into markets, it will increase innovation and generally improve quality of life for everyone.

The concerns that you have raised regarding ONDC is similar to what domestic companies raised way back in 1991, when FDI was about to be introduced. Many experts thought that Foreign players will capture the market due to better quality, better features etc. After 30 years we can see no such thing happened, companies who were innovative were able to survive despite intense competition. So as of now ONDC is in nascent phase, it will take atleast 5 years for people to start adopting this platform. This is a good step by the Govt to ensure small businesses can also survive in an intensely competitive environment of Retail industry. Ultimately remember all these companies are in the Services sector so its ultimately better user experience and customer support which determines User retention for any such platforms

Respect from Macca 🤷‍♂️♥️🇸🇦 Also, I predict a new class of Indian retailers will be born. They will be above scammers and below Amazon and Walmart in terms of service quality and price. Their disadvantage will be service quality inconsistency and inability to serve many customers. This happens becuase they are a one-man entity. They will market themsleves as ‘ethical individuals’ sort of ‘trust me bro’.

My take on ONDC product listing which thereby may help solve other problems too is like - 1. Firstly products should be listed which are available as nearby to user locations as possible with cost (filter) of products. 2. And then use ratings, comments n all. This will help users with faster delivery, easy after sales service. This will also help nearby shops as they will also be anle to sell products and compete and grow in market. This will also help delivery centres too as many deliveries can be done by nearby delivery services hence chances to grow and compete in market. And thereby maybe solving supply management and merchant/products hotlisting problems.

I have a small model :- Case 1. In ONDC we should implement location based e-commerce .Suppose that I am from New Delhi and I want to buy a smartphone .ONDC can assure that you have to buy the smartphone from the nearest retailers. And the nearest retailers also cannot charge more on the whole price (price +delivery price ) as compared from the other retailers on ONDC. It will definitely benefit small retailers. 2. Secondly ONDC should charge some extra taxes for more sells. If amazon sells more items then ONDC should assure that amazon will have to pay extra taxes. It will definitely reduce the profit of the big giants like amazon.

Answer is that all these different elements of the market will run separately in future without the need a centralized marketplace like Amazon / Flipkart...... Vedors, Customers, Warehouses, Delivery parnters etc will connect to a single entity like ONDC or maybe some other single startup. Just because these startups took billions in funding doesn't mean they have to succeed, only the ones with a future proof business model will survive at last.

After sales support is also an important thing to consider while buying expensive goods. I think customers will be more comfortable buying higher priced items from Amazon/Flipkart if it means they can get better support for any grievances. This said for cheaper products which do-not require much maintenance ONDC can be revolutionary.

I feel just like the time when Paytm was equivalent to digital money, and government started to break the monopoly of Paytm by launching upi and when paytm didn't accept it, today we all know about the downfall.... similarly I feel if there is a way that all private players and ondc can work together then the ecosystem made will be unbreakable like irctc website and physically buying tickets both are stilled used and have a duopoly... if govt wants to work profitable then they have to build this ecosystem other wise like bsnl, etc they will run on losses and eventually need to privatise .... this is my opinion.....

Not really. many small retailers don't go on Amazon or Flipkart etc because marketplaces makes it harder for small retailers to sustain with their own proxy sellers and other marketing strategies tailored based on the data aggregated from buyers on their platform which are not a cup of tea of our local retailers and they lose visibility after a while. It benefits customers but local businessmen are losing business. Flipkart and Amazon are basically stealing away the ideas of products from best selling brands and launch products through their proxy brands and sell and earn huge revenue and killing the original product. That's why many sellers complained about this malpractice where they do all the work to make a quality product and become a best selling product in category and after a while these marketplaces takeover that traffic by launching their copies of these products with all the data in their hand to capitalise and kill competition.. Not just in India, but also in other countries. In US, sustainable shoes brand All birds also faced same issue with Amazon where their best selling Merino wool shoes and tree based material shoes are copied by Amazon and launched with deep discounts.

About listing those products on market space...the govt can use location based suggestions.. like suggesting mom and pop stores nearby first (as mostly they might the ones who can deliver the product at a faster rate but with higher cost) and then those giant market companies on the criteria of their pricing. Further Zomato could use their delivery hand to deliver any thing apart from food items. They could tie up with local stores to deliver items...
