( www.TFLcar.com ) By now, we've shown our rugged, old-school 2006 Land Rover LR3 to be a capable off-road rig, but how will it hold up on a 1,300 road trip? Tommy finds out by taking it on a road trip all the way from Colorado to White Sands National Park in New Mexico.

It is a brilliant vehicle and will take care of you if you take care of it. I did a 5000 km (3000 miles) across 4 countries (Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Greece) last fall in my 2005 Disco 3, including plenty of low range use. An airstrut began leaking at one point, but the leak was relatively minor, so we made it home (2000 km away) without issues. 600$ later, the D3 had new front airstruts :D

Drive it 6 hours at a time pretty frequently between states. I'd say thats a pretty good bargain personally. No car payment so even if it did break I wouldn't mind.paying for replacement parts. Problem is no one knows how to properly care for these things.

The A Pillar trim clips are not reusable. Someone probably pulled the trim off before and didn't use new clips when refitting. Part number for the set of new clips is DHB500400. I've done two cross country trips (California to Nova Scotia, Canada and back) in my LR3 before shipping it to Europe and haven't had a single issue along the way.

It's great for towing our NATO military trailer. Just had all the lower arms replaced. The ride has now gone back to silky smooth. I'm currently sourcing a galvanised ladder chassis. Once I have that I'l transfer everything over and run it for another 15 years!

Once the air suspension gives you trouble, and it will, I highly recommend switching to coils. Especially if you plan to do a lot of off-roading. I did and I love it. The ride is awesome, just as smooth but without the sponginess. And the thought that I don't need to worry about loosing a pump, breaking an air line, pooping an air bag... Priceless. Cool upgrade are the coils with a 2" lift already installed.

I also have a 2006 LR3 SE. We have he 4.0 V6 and 3rd row. Runs strong - quick is not in it's vocabulary. It is our weekend warrior and hardware store supply hauler. Funny it has outlived out 2013 LR4 that had catastrophic engine failure (timing chain and guides twice, water pump and finally cylinder head) at under 62,000 miles. Although we have experienced many EXPENSIVE trips to the LR dealer we still hold on to LR3. These tend to have a cult-like following. Most of the issues are relatively minor and some I have tackled myself purely by reading up on forums or youtube videos. My wife actually prefers taking the kids in the LR3 over her BMW X3 M. Those A pillar trim pieces came off on mine as well. New clips and I put a small metal tapping screw in the top for extra measure - painted it black and it isn't noticeable. I've seen people use silicone as well to ensure water doesn't get in.

Questioning this superb (probably best) „man for rough and tough jobs“ on this one is like asking do I surf the waves with the best board available. By the end the driver has to know its baby in all kind of issues and should be able to drive the rest does the vehicle for you.

Based on my sample of 1, my Discovery 4 has been rudely reliable. Bought new in March 2013, it has now covered 111,000 miles. It has averaged 31mpg (the larger imperial gallon admittedly) from its 3.0 V6 Diesel engine (255hp and 600nm torque). In that time we’ve bought the Landrover extended warranty every year until it reached the 100,000 mile limit. We should have saved our money. It’s need two MAF sensors and a water in fuel sensor over 9 years in addition to the usual tyres, brakes and bushes. The windscreen trim is a well known issue here. A windscreen stone chip required a replacement and the fitters automatically bring replacement trim pieces because once removed, the clips always break. Your LR3 probably has a replacement screen and the clips broke when it was changed. They need good maintenance and, like complex and capable people, don’t like to be ignored. I hope it continues to give good service.
