Anyone who knows anything, knows it is not as easy or as straight forward as you make it seem. Keep doing what you are doing. Exciting to hear you even talking about the cabin. when you finally get to the engines I think you will have more than enough help and support, with or without Caterpillar. Thanks for sharing.

We are always amazed at the calm determination and sense of humor you guys approach this massive project with. I keep forgetting that since y'all are English calm determination and sense of humor are pretty normal, wish it would catch on in the US. Cheers from NC. Can't wait to see this craft go down that channel.

As someone who's also restoring an old, rotten wooden boat, I can say that keeping your cool is of paramount importance. This sort of work is not for high-strung people in search of immediate gratification. Then, of course, I'm descended from original New England settlers, some of whom were sailors and boatbuilders, so it might just be in my blood.

As a Mechanic, myself, I love to see the process that gets you where you need to be! And how you overcame the challenges.

I'll suggest that that when you've finished with the frames in the engine room, you've done enough reconstruction of the hull to safely unmoor and go for a short sail within the estuary. I believe that would generate a burst of enthusiasm within and beyond your community. That enthusiasm would produce more financial support and maybe get you to 100k subscribers. Target the short sail at Caterpillar. That may gin up their interest in becoming a sponsor. After your short sail, bring her back to her "berth" and tie her up till the following summer. Once Sarinda has been tested and proven - make it a once a year event!
@davidelliott5843

This is a great idea. It will also test for any instability caused by that big rear cabin. I personally don’t like it. But that’s says more about me than these amazing boat builders.

If I recall, the rudders are jammed at the moment, so steering might be a bit problematic!
@buzzkillington3354
@buzzkillington3354 5 месяцев назад
Rudders are jammed, engines need completely rewiring, the transom is rotten, the decks aren't fully attached to the hull and all they have is a rubbish 1980s fish finder as a depth gauge probably not ready to be moved in a tricky shallow area just yet
@stevejohnstonbaugh9171
@stevejohnstonbaugh9171 5 месяцев назад
@@davidelliott5843 Thanks! I'm glad you agree. The only question I have is where is the ballast that was removed in the areas already restored? Back in the bilge? As long as it's below deck, I suppose it would not make a big difference traveling at high idle on a calm day. Plus, it would be an opportunity to test some of the boat systems as well, like the stabilizers. I could imagine a big public picnic to celebrate the day. Ship Happens buys a keg of beer and everyone brings their own food. 😊
@hanyoukimura
@hanyoukimura 5 месяцев назад
Not a great idea considering the rudders are jammed, the engines need rewiring, the fish finder is from the 80s and of questionable reliability, the transom is rotten, and the decks aren't really secure. Perhaps once all of those issues have been addressed. Have patience and support their ongoing hard work. Good things come to those who wait

When you must grind (or weld) iron near wooden floor ( or walls) you previously must cover de wood with completly wet paper sheets, so the sparks of metal don´t reach the wood. They loose heat with the water in the sheets. That is and old trick that teachs to me an old welder man. Go on with your magnificent work!!! And please excuse my English, obviously it is not my native language.

Further to my message I sent to you ref : my grandfather Fred spires, he was one of sterling's men sas dropped into Africa in 1944 to sabatier rommels fuel dumps. My hero...... Also told me he took out one of hitlers staff in Germany, captured, escaped from pow camp and came back to blighty through the French underground. Debriefed and on a plane to Africa the following day! Previous to that he was in Italy fighting and found himself confronted by a battalion of Italian soldiers on a dirt rd, he raised his gun and told them they were surrounded and to put their guns down. They did and he got 1 soldier to collect all the guns and throw them in the bushes and marched them through allied lines..... My grandad Fred spires....... never to be forgotten....... Wish I could share some of the photos I've got of him with his unit. 22 survived the drop into Africa and i have a picture of those who survived. What you're doing is a tribute to the past in my eyes and I love it.

In laminating those frames together you seem to use excessive amounts of epoxy, it would keep your costs down to be a little more frugal. I’m sure you could apply half as much and still get good ooze when clamping. I suppose the scrape off is used on the next frame so not all wasted. Your positive attitude is just fantastic, and you are both becoming shipwrights, well done.
@wazza33racer
@wazza33racer 4 месяца назад
Pro-tip.......heavy diesel engines like those CAT's use fluid filled harmonic dampers on the front of the crankshaft. Its that large pulley that drives all the accessory belts. Those dampers have an issue that when they are old, the fluid goes hard and puts them seriously out of balance and will destroy the crankshafts. It takes decades to happen, but it does happen. Good idea to take them off at some point and check they are ok.

Simon, Gemma, have you ever seen a program called l, A plane is born? Mark Evans, the presenter, has a fibreglass station. The box with the resin has a light bulb in it to keep the resin warm. If the box was properly insulated, you could get away with a comparatively low wattage bulb.
@johndelaney5889
@johndelaney5889 5 месяцев назад
To achieve similar results. All you would need to do is line a small cupboard with polystyrene insulation and put a halogen light inside. And keep sealants and epoxy that you need to keep warm inside.

It made my heart happy to hear "It's paint your boat time!". I had a Chief Bo'sun who was (briefly) speechless when one of the other non-rates in a "painting party" repeated the phrase "once over dust and twice over rust" when the Chief told us to do a decent job of surface prep. His voice quickly came back and we had a taste of the blue flame of verbal abuse. It was classic.

Me and my brother-in-law fibreglassed a 40 foot navy pinnace in the early eighties, we bought all the gear from a place in southport, we purchased a 25kg sack of Talcum powder very cheap, this was used to thicken the resin, the boat is still going strong.

You could install 'temporary' stanchions by resting the end of a plank on the exhaust box so it sticks up above the deck by a meter, screwing it to the hull and running a rope through holes drilled in the tops. It shouldn't interfere with web frames and will provide some safety when working on that narrow deck...

wooden pallets have 3 internal runners/braces. If one of the outside ones is removed with the lower boards on that half, the upper half could be bolted to the deck with the other intact half of the pallet protruding off as a platform (perhaps with the cut off boards used as a brace against the hull). That should have enough strength to not bow under heavy weights if well connected to the deck. Perhaps used pallets are relatively inexpensive over there, or constructing something similar with reclaimed/cheap wood.

Never going to be easy. Even a solid boat needs maintenance. I live on the East coast, between two rivers, with a healthy boating community. It's sad to see some of the hulks rotting in the tidal mudflats, they were there before I was born, and they will still be there after I have gone. Old boats were made from solid timbers, you can't beat good Oak. It's good to see you don't cut corners for clicks. You are bringing the boatbuilder's art onto the small screen and educating your viewers. Seeing to bits that don't go as planned will further that education, and maybe increase our vocabulary. Remember, only dead fish swim with the tide.

wow, I think you’re so courageous taking on these massive jobs, I am now quite elderly and have dementia and struggled to change a lightbulb! It’s amazing how thin the walls (I’m sure that’s not the correct term) of The Boat. Thank you again for the entertainment, it was exciting starting the engines, I just hope that I’m still here to see you “sail away”.
