Dude can you do a Q&A? (Preferably live). I want to know how and where did you learn how to fix stuff? It’s like you’re born with an engineering mind, you keep your cool, always patient and never get flustered. Unlike me who has tantrum when I run up against a problem, then try’s to resolve the problem with a hammer and when that doesn’t work sit sulk till one of my buddies shows up to give a hand.

In that type of cooling system, the sea water doesn't get into the engines directly, but it goes through the heat exchangers and those can be corroded by sea water even if the engines aren't. But even in that case, replacing the heat exchangers is way cheaper and easier than replacing the engines. You also don't want a failed heat exchanger in the middle of the ocean.

I'm not a marine mechanic but I used to rebuild starters for a remanufacturing company. People would bring in starters off of boats and the counter people would tell them that it's a special starter built specifically for boats. When I was given the first "marine" starter to rebuild, I asked my foreman what was different about a "marine" starter. "Not a damned thing but we can charge double because the boat owner thinks it's special."

@ChrisWright - What's your opinion on gas vs diesel engines for boats like this one? Can they be swapped without making expensive changes?
@WrightPerf
@WrightPerf 2 года назад
@@phlodel well a marine starter and a automotive starter are quite a bit different. Most marine starters are sealed and use corrosion resistant materials like stainless fasteners. There is reverse and standard rotation starters as well. But the reverse rotation starters are typically only for the older powerplant manufacturers and mostly fell out of use in the 80s. Because manufacturers like Mercruiser figured out that it was way more cost effective to have the drive/transmission control the counter rotation needed in a dual powerplant setup.

I hope the project does not get sidelined as is the case with the other site you mentioned, the strainers you have are probably 2 for engines , 3rd fir generator, and you might have another (4th) if you have air con . The caps might have been left off from a cooling system flush of the sea water side where the strainer is mated to an adaptor to feed in fresh or treated water. , treated if you are winterising or descaling . The engines usually turn the same way. The transmissions take care of the counter rotating props. Be that as it may, if you're going to run the engines for any amount of time, you'll need water in the intake strainers to avoid burning up the salt water impellers. You MAY be able to get enough flow for idle RPM by sticking a hose in the filter housings after CLOSING the seacocks. You don't want to have to go fishing for impeller bits in the heat exchangers. That's no fun AT ALL.
@sethbarnes7608
@sethbarnes7608 2 года назад
Actually, there's only a couple of styles of marine transmissions that will do that. The Borg-Warner Twindisc, and the new ZF models. The vast majority of twin engine boats have 1 counter rotating engine

@@sethbarnes7608 every single Borg Warner Velvet Drive will do that as well. Almost all of the Hurth (now sold as ZF) transmissions will do exactly the same. The now hot seawater is pumped out, and cold back in by impellers in the outdrives (where the propeller is) and “voila” nothing overheats and the water jackets in the engine block don’t get all gunked up

If the coolant was low, I would just go ahead and replace both water pumps and impellers because you don't know if maybe it got slightly hot and cracked the housing or it corroded enough to start a slow leak. You would rather find out now on the hardstand rather than 50 miles out in the channel with no land in sight..

Only five minutes into this video , I have to agree with you, do a thorough cleaning and that gives you looking at every spot upclose. You will see more of what you need to do just to keep it a float. If it won't float the engines won't help much. But it did float in the first video. CLEAN IT UP , CLEAN IT UP. Really appreciated the veteran shoutout at the beginning bro. I'm a "disabled" (very fortunate compared to others) vet at only 26 years old. Life hits fast, and its a weird dynamic going from picturing "disabled vets" as old dudes wearing Vietnam caps at early-bird breakfast, to being one myself at my age, and fellow soldiers I served with my age. There's more of us out there than you think.. you probably see one every day and would never know it. All the recognition we can get is awesome! Just found your vids and you gained a new sub. Great stuff! edit: this is in no way a shot at our old-timer, OG vets! Toughest generation in history, those guys.

You might think about running a product called barnacle buster into a sea strainer, into your heat exchanger. Clogged heat exchangers cause the most overheating issues on engines with heat exchangers. Vinegar works good I hear also, but have only used BB mentioned.

Nice job. Just a quick observation. The seams surface area under the crack of the broken starter looked very clean where it was broken apart, very little discolouration or corrosion. Just saying, but are you sure you didn't break it trying to start a seized engine. Or it looks like it was broken recently.

Never use automotive parts, especially the starter and alternator, in a boat. Marine electrical parts are designed to be spark free. If you should have a gas leak a spark from the starter, or alternator can cause an explosion. Please use only Marine parts, yes more money, but it's much safer.

Watch draft as the loop has some shallow water. Try to find a diesel powered boat. Unless money is no object the gas engines are looking at 10 to 12 gph per engine. Single or twin engine trawlers have the most room andbyou travel at 8 to 12 mph or 7 to 10 knots per hour. The older Ford Lehman 120 to 160 hp diesel will burn 3 to 6 gph per engine.
