Surgical robots are becoming more and more commonplace worldwide. But many patients feel uncomfortable with robotic doctors. Could robots one day replace human doctors and surgeons? With self-driving cars around the corner - will AI soon enable automated surgeries? We visited Tokyo based start-up "Riverfield". They are specializing in robots for cancer treatment. But they also develop systems for remote surgery, which could soon become a reality with ultrafast 5G-Networks.

Hey overall this is a great video, but i have to point out, that the comparison between the EMARO System and the DaVici System at 4:48 is misleading, because we are talking about two Systems with different capabilities, one (The Emaro) is 'just' an Edsocope holder where the Surgeon does the active parts by him self as it is shown in your first trial , the Davinic System u are comparing it to does both parts - holding the Endsocope and doing active tasks initiated by the surgen on a console much as you are showing towards the End of the Video

For places like the US where medical bills can (and do) easily bankrupt people, systems like this can potentially help bring down costs, esp with increased automation, not to mention bringing medical care to places where they have none. I really hope this tech matures quickly.

@@adrian1622 : Look, I don't blindly love american capitalism. It has serious issues. But prices are mostly set by supply and demand. With increased supply, prices go down. That's how capitalism works. You also have not considered that the price for lumber has dropped as a result of technologies like chainsaws. If your criticism is that the capitalists who own the machines will become even richer, then I'm with you; but if your argument is that automation doesn't reduce prices, then you're wrong. I think doctors and surgeons will be the first of the highly trained workforce to be replaced by robots and restricted AI, just imagine a system that can read all bioscans simultaneously (from blood pressure, to hormonal concentration or even mood) and have a custom analisys of your body functions. This will be the next big revolution that will make our life expectancy grow beyond the 120 years, after that I figure that is 3d organ printing, genetic enhancements and micro/nano robot body function regulators and that means virtual imortality.

Robots an AI have a great place in our world today, but in my opinion there are things that could go wrong. Two things I'm worried about is something that doctors take an oath to obey and that is beneficence and non-maleficence. The first in in regards to doing good to the community and patient and the second is doing no harm. While many doctors break these oaths everyday due to any number of things, I think a robot, who lacks human capacity, is certain to break these as well. For instance, if a physcian is in surgery and they realize that the patient has an anatomical anomaly they may change the way they do the surgery or not complete the surgery due to the inherent risk of some of these anomalies. This is a good example of non-maleficence and its hard for me to see an AI acknowledging that "choosing" to change the surgery or not do it at all. In terms of beneficence, there is one thing that sticks out in my mind when looking at physicians and AIs and that is the ability to be human. Something as simple as being there for patients and families can do so much good. The simplicity of human touch in the face of crisis can bring much more good into the world than most realize. I do see a huge place for AIs in medicine and surgery but to only use AIs is a dangerous trap that we are moving towards.
