I disagree with the slap and any sort of violence however, Chris's comment was hateful and ableist. Black women experience soo much trauma and hatred revolving around their hair all the time. And have a lot of identity tied to there hair for cultural reasons. That's why the crown act had to be passed. The fact that he made a joke about jadas alopecia which she clearly stated she was struggling and hurting and vulnerable about to a room full of mostly white people was absolutely unforgivable to me. Chris rock has a history of disrepecting black womens hair. He made an entire documentary calling black women self hating and ghetto for the way they do their hair. He exploited her autoimmune disease for cheap laughs in front of a global audience. I understand that you might not have the tools to fully understand the disrespect but the lack of intersectionality in this entire comment section is really showing. Also I remember people making fun of Chadwick Bosemans weight towards the end of his life God forbid something is really wrong with Jada.

I have not seen Chris Rock’s documentary, but from some brief reading on Wikipedia: According to Rock, he was inspired to make the movie after his three-year-old daughter Lola asked him, "Daddy, how come I don't have good hair?" She has curly, wiry hair typical of many people of African descent. He realized she had already absorbed the perception among some black people that curly hair was not "good".” With that prompt of inquiry, it seems unlikely to me that the documentary was clearly disrespectful of black women. It wouldn’t be a very good documentary if it didn’t present various facets and nuances of how and why humans behave as they do. Also, reports have said Chris did not know that Jada has alopecia. To someone who follows her, her condition and upset about it might be obvious, but I’m sure not everyone knows what is going on with everyone else in Hollywood. I can see there is another level because Jada is a black woman at a ceremony in which black women have been shut out of awards for decades (congrats to Ariana DeBose). I am not sure all this was going through Chris’ mind when he made an unscripted joke. Of course he shouldn’t have made it, but I’m just trying to leave space that maybe he is just a bit of a jerk who picked on someone who caught his eye because her lack of hair made her stand out, and not deliberately hateful. I am curious, though, do you think it would it have been better, worse, or the same if the joke would have been made by a white, male comedian?

@@c.w.2000 I have seen the mockumentary it came across to me as a faux woke exploitation of black women struggles with not only their hair but there beauty in society in general. The over all message seemed to be that black women are self hating. A lot of black women hated it. The joke would be inappropriate no matter what race of person said it. If you know the person really well and discussed it before hand and they didn't mind that's the only time this sort of joke would be acceptable. Clearly he did not. Will Smith is not only irresponsible in the he handled that situation but also inexcusable but Chris rock is not n innocent angel baby who did no wrong.

I like that you chose to address this situation in the light of mental health and stress. I do think that people are making so much of it. If this happened any other place it would definitely get that wide spread reaction and retaliation towards the people; maybe other people in attendance or someone actually close to whoever is involved but not wholly on display. And as for jada I just want to say that she’s stunning 🤩 beautiful and hope that she can find peace regardless of what anyone thinks or feels.

Thank you for this video, ladies! I read so many comments about how classy Chris Rock is and how unclassy Will Smith is, the amount of ignorance was getting scary. I am against violence and I think Will Smith didn't react in the best possible way, but Chris Rock was the real bully who should be apologizing here. Will Smith was defending his wife. The way he chose was not the most appropriate one, but his intentions were good. Chris Rock was not doing comedy, he was mocking a woman for her illness. This is what abusive people often do. They say something they know is very hurtful and mean and cover it up as a joke. This was not a joke, it was not a comedy, it was intentionally causing emotional pain to someone. And I am sure he knew what he was doing. And Will Smith just stood up for the person getting hurt. But we are so conditioned to react against the one that " spoils the fun" , the one that reacts to the abuse and says this is not OK. Chris Rock violated a boundary, he had no right of even getting close to. It is like a man getting in a ladies dressing room and complaining he is getting beaten up. Of course he will get beaten up. What is he doing in a ladies dressing room? He is violating a boundary. Will Smith set the boundary again and made it clear if it is violated again, consequences will follow. And it takes a lot of courage to stand up and to reinforce a boundary getting violated and to defend a person getting hurt. Again, he didn't choose the best way possible, but he did the right thing and I am proud of him. Never liked him more. He was defending a lady getting hurt against a bully.

This is such a good point and it is something we clearly hadn't processed yet when making the video. Why in 2022 did Chris Rock go for the "easy" hurtful joke? He knows better. At least I hope he does. He poked a bear and this time the bear got up and swatted at him. Hopefully he will think more before he opens his mouth to mock anyone next time. I get that comedy is often about mockery, but I watch a lot of comics who never go there. And they are really funny. So much went wrong with that whole situation, but I do like that it is causing all of us to think about things we don't think about.

I'd like to add that people deal with things that make them uncomfortable by joking. If I had a nickel for every genius who said "huh" to me when I mention my hearing loss, I'd be a millionaire. I've wanted to go upside some of my favorite people's heads! I can easily imagine people making similar clever remarks to Jada, without malice, but sometimes it is hurtful. I told my brother just this weekend "That crap gets old".

I didn't see this happen as I generally don't watch Oscars, Emmy's etc.. I am glad however, that you chose to discuss it on your show. I also appreciate seeing Elvira and knowing that Robin was there with you . I have enjoyed many episodes of the Doll Circle. I feel that regardless of his mental state, Will should never have resorted to violence, or if the reaction was that intense then he needed to leave the room. I also agree with you that he was close to snapping, otherwise why would someone do such a thing?? These thoughts are in no way intended judgemental it's just my view of such a situation. You are right about people being on edge and I think we all need to find ways to release the pressure. So glad you all are here, as we share in working through our recoveries.

Thank you for sharing his Instagram apology I’m glad he apologized to Chris since I was concerned that he didn’t when he won. I try very hard to never judge anyone and understand how they feel. And we are all human and make mistakes and that’s okay. I do understand his feelings on defending those you love especially family just I don’t like to see it done with violence. 🤗🤗🤗 yes Kirsten Dunst & her hubby’s seats were like Will & Jada’s definitely odd to space couples apart. It was crazy that we all witnessed this with the audience and Chris I was surprised he kept going. I agree I’m very glad Denzel, Tyler Perry & Bradley checked on Will. 💯 comedians most do struggle with mental health actually a lot in the entertainment industry even reality stars and I definitely think we all have to embrace each other and accept our differences and listen.

I was so shocked my husband didn’t think it was real but I felt sure it was and definitely I’m trying to understand both perspectives on this like I’ve been watching the Oscars since the 90s I was only a preteen/teen back then so I think also because I’m a mom now seeing someone slapped on live television I felt sad I definitely am trying to understand how Will & Jada felt I definitely watch a lot of stand up comedy and my husband is a huge fan of Chris Rock so I kind of agreed with John Leguizamo that it was a joke and we can’t take ourselves so seriously. I’m also a huge John Waters fan and so I also think being able to make fun of yourself is completely healthy but it’s obviously not how others must feel given the divided feelings we all have. 🤗🤗🤗

Thanks for making this video! I've recently been having anger issues caused by my depression and it caused me to verbally lash out at a friend and be cold to strangers. The Will Smith situation reminded me of myself on a heightened scale. It scares me how people can lose themselves in their own pain. I appreciate that you talked about this topic, because it humanized Will Smith and people like me and the trauma (depression, relationship issues, etc.) that causes people to act out in anger.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I think I filtered this event through my own similar experiences of anxiety in particular. When I was younger I had violence issues when I was experiencing anxiety. Because violence was a normal reaction to things in my home, I didn't realize it wasn't the way to handle those emotional states. I'm no longer violent when in the grips of anxiety, but sometimes I do need to get away from people or go completely silent. My family knows that when I say, "I am not going to speak for a while because nothing that comes out of my mouth is going to be good and I don't want to say something I will regret." Words can be very violent....another lesson learned the hard way in childhood :-(

The bottom line is both of them are assholes with poor morals (excuse my language). They both did something wrong each need to be held accountable for bad behavior. Words are brutal. There were actually times as a child I wished I had just been smacked across the lips ( a popular reaction in my home) instead of having to hear what was yelled at me. Hard to get past, "I wish you had never been born." That kind of stings when you are a kid!

Really? There was a whole discussion here about what could be going on to cause someone to erupt in violence at an important public event. There were also aspects of how that affects the person upon whom the violence was perpetrated and the witnesses. This can give insight about other similar situations that might happen in our lives. There are things to be learned about psychology and sociology from this case study.
@MelissaHunterTalk

This is something that I know is probably already being studied. Not just what happened in the theater, but what has happened around the world as people have reacted to it. It was literally a topic of every conversation I had on Monday.....not instigated by me, fyi. Other people brought it up. On business calls, chatting with friends. This is a sociological event because there is so much intersectionality entwined in the event and the aftermath.

This isn't the first time Chris has said something negative about Jada. I think what Will did was justified because his wife has PUBLICLY stated she suffers from Alopecia. It's been so educational to hear the different points of view on this incident. There are so many layers to what happened and we all bring our own histories and sometimes trauma to a moment like this. Hopefully something good will come from the discussions we will all probably have all week!

Not legally justified. You can’t hit someone just for saying something: that’s assault, and you can be criminally charged. Chris Rock could press charges in this case, and possibly charges could be laid even without his initiation. There have been cases where someone hit someone, they fell, hit their head, and died: that’s potentially a manslaughter or murder charge. The line from anger to violence can’t be crossed. Also, Jada did publicly say she had alopecia, but it didn’t come as an alert on everyone’s phone. I follow celebrity news more than an average person and did not know. It’s quite possible Chris Rock did not know either.
