#Podcast Over a decade of chronic neurological pain has taught me that we can live with pain. It takes mindfulness, meditation and more work that we want to do. The alternative? Addiction to opioids, and that isn't an answer that works for me. How about you?
The book that changed my relationship with my pain: Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn: amzn.to/3J5Gnjw

Tmjd baddie right here. Chronic pain literally creeps up on you and you wish you would have been more grateful for the times when my body didn’t feel like it had betrayed me. I was giving so many pain meds at the ripe old age of 16. Pain meds which by the way I found out I was allergic to. I WISH my doctors would slow down and say “Ella why are you so stressed why do you grind your teeth 24/7”. My doctors would tell me I would get better and yet here I am still suffering until finally one doctor said to me “Ella this will be your reality for the rest of your life you will struggle with this and you will need days to rest and you will need days to cry about it but you will never get better”. It broke my heart but I’m glad someone was honest with me because I needed the truth. Idk if that makes sense but yah chronic pain sucks and I wish doctors were able to help more then just giving you meds.

This is so beautifully said my lovely ladies. Experiencing a chronicle condition that determines your everyday life can really make you feel like there isn't anything else. The chronicle disease may be a part of of you, but NOT the only part. And definitely not the most important, significant nor defining part. Realizing that is a different struggle altogether. But definitely worth the effort.

I have Morton Neuromas in both feet and have to be on Gabapentin for pain. Tried many other treatments before this and nothing worked. Cannot walk without extreme pain unless on Gabapentin. Also on medicine for extreme anxiety and depression. I use to be a person that never took a single pill, then when my 40's came went down hill. Now I'm 55. Love watching you and the Doll Circle so much. Dolls really do help me get thru all this.

1in 5, I have chronic pain from multiple health issues. I have been told I'm too young to have chronic pain and it makes me so mad. I have chronic pain from being obese but I'm obese from health issues as well. I have osteoarthritis and migraines. I could list all of my diagnosis. I'm in bed 90% of the day or sitting because I can't move. I am not able to work, I'm wheelchair bound and its sad that i could easily be helped with disability and healthcare to be able to get surgeries to feel better but i keep getting denied because of my age and that I'm not considered disabled even with all these problems stacked up and causing depression and anxiety . I was told i couldn't get controlled substances and i am given ibuprofen that makes me sick. I had to tell that i am allergic to ibuprofen so i could get something stronger. I have been in so much pain from neuropathy but yet they didn't help me at all. I thought it was a cyst and they said because its not a certain size they can't surgically remove it. I hate American healthcare.

I have lower back pain. My doctor stopped giving me pain meds to avoid an addiction and we talked about physical therapy, but of course it's not covered. So it was off to the library for research! I found some exercises and home remedies that help. I'm gonna try the visualization thing.

I have herniated discs and no health insurance so I get pinched nerves (sciatica) and I have that right now. I obviously don’t know the level of pain you feel or anyone else but for me it’s hell. I’ve experienced this 3 times, each bout lasting 3 months or so. I also just, like we’re talking days, recovered from Shingles which I think stemmed from stress. I’m In My mid 30s. I always envisioned shingles as something only people double my age get. It was so itchy and so painful. Talk about my mental health going down the tubes as a result. Thank your for the story about the 9 lb. Baby. I’m glad I watched this.

Shingles does mainly affect older people, but that is largely because immune function declines as we get older. Stress, poor diet, poor sleep, etc., as well as some medical conditions, can weaken the immune system at any age. I've never had shingles, but, as a former pharmacist, I saw patients who suffered greatly from it.

I have a bunch of chronic pain issues; as well as disabilities and disorders. So it just can be overwhelming. They still don't know what is wrong with my legs. But PT helped a bit until I have a migraine and they stop working

Melissa I love you, 🌺 and thank you for starting this channel. You’re captivating to listen to and you’re always full of wisdom. But I have a question about this one. What happens when your identity Simply Cannot be manifested because of the physical? At least that’s my case. 😢 Thank you 💕

Until Melissa answers, I have some thoughts and feelings about this, if you are interested. I think you are asking about what happens if you can never find a separation at all between your pain and your identity. My first inquiry to you would be whether or not you have gone for psychological therapy with someone trained in chronic pain issues? I think most people need qualified help if they have significant pain and the other issues that often come with it. Maybe there is a group program available to you, as Melissa mentioned. Also see her recommended book in the notes; my doctor recommended it to me too. I didn't finish reading it, but got into an 8-week mindfulness-based course, which definitely helped my pain and anxiety. Also, I personally found benefit from Feldenkrais Method (awareness through movement) classes. This is a movement practice, a little bit like yoga, but it works more on the neuroplasticity of the brain. Shifting awareness out of one's thoughts and into the body, which can seem like a hostile place, can remove mental barriers that talk therapy can not. You don't have to be physically fit to do it, although you will need to find a teacher. The Feldenkrais website has more information. Another thought is that pain is definitely a part of one's identity, and it does shape a person. In my case, I will never be the person I would have been without the injuries, physical conditions, and pain I have had and do experience. It takes daily practice (in which things like therapy and meditation help) to find some sort of peace with that and live some sort of life. My pain and limitations are not the entire picture of me, however. No doubt it is worse for those in severe pain (mine is now mild to moderate, although I have other disabilities), but I think most people can be helped to some degree because of the nature of pain (that is, it is constructed in the brain). Maybe it helps to think of it in that neurological way: because pain is constructed in the brain, it is definitely not the entire brain.

Honestly, I could not have answered this any better. Getting into a class of some kind can really help. If the pain and your identity are so intertwined, a professional is the best way to go. If you cannot afford one at this time, check out the free mindfuless resources on RU-vid. Just look up Jon Kabat-Zinn and you will find a lot of resources.

My chronic neuropathy(nerve pain) is in my feet and I can’t do any exercises to help it since exercise actually makes mine worse. We still have no idea how I have it or why it’s so terrible. Also I’m sorry for kinda ranting in this comment section.
