Today we take the plunge and see if the rumours are true. Whether the Toybaru's (GT86/GR86/86/BRZ/FRS) really aren't meant for staggered alloy wheels and if 19" wheels are too big for these cars!

I can't speak on 19" wheels, but the issue with staggered tyres is understeer. At the limit on track, the car will not handle well with a staggered setup. I am boosted and currently run a square 265/35 r18 which is plenty to put the power down at 320WHP. I was previously on 225 front and 255 rear, and my lap times were noticeably worse. If it is a street car, I can't imagine you will notice much of a difference in handling. However, I do agree that wider tyres upfront does dull the steering feel a tad at lower speeds but this is not an issue for me personally. FYI, I ran the same tyre (PS4S) for both wheel setups.

Can’t say i’ve ever noticed understeer on mine since I moved to 235’s but that could be because i’m runner wider fronts than you were. That could be the difference. But we’ll see when I take it to the track. I’m keeping an open mind. Can always go back to the square setup.

@@leedfollow Im curious to see how you go on track, especially with 19" rims. Did you notice any difference in comfort with 19", considering you have to run a lower profile tyre?

Yup, still very comfortable (y) Quite surprising actually! I’ve been out in some cars that had coilovers fitted and they would shake your teeth loose, but this is nowhere’s near that. This just feels like a mildly stiffer drive compared to stock. Very impressed.

If I’m running 18 9.5 rear and 18 8.5 front. Same tires front 255/35/18 turanza. It handed giid in the curbs but I’m getting my check engine and traction control light on in the dash. Also in the rain feels like it’s gona spind . Thinking just going back to Reg 18

I think your problem is the tyres, not their size. Instead of using an economy tyre like a Bridgestone Turanza, why not use a sports tyre like a Bridgestone Potenza, Goodyear Eagle F1 or a Michelin Pilot Sport? Also traction control light should never also cause an engine check light.

I have a set of staggered 19 inch wheels being put on in February, I guess I'll find out. :) Edit: 225/35 - 245/35 Bridgestone Potenza tyres, 8.5 x 19 - 9.5 x 19 3 piece rims.

why not just get a better offset without the increased width .. all of this is about offset
@leedfollow
@leedfollow 6 месяцев назад
No this is about wider tyres to get more grip, not offset. Changing offset alone but sticking to the same width wheel/tyre just moves in/out the contact patch. And if you change offset without changing the width of the wheels you move the centre point out of alignment which changes the way the weight of the car is transferred to the wheel bearings and could introduce severe tram lining amongst other things.
