Love your mum who is so intelligent and keeps an open mind. This will be an exciting project that will educate us all in how to work WITH nature to enrich our lives.
Whatever the Countess decides it will be with deepest care and concern for the BEST conservation of Britain’s FINEST Manor House! Truly adore and admire this Lady!!!
I loved listening to her questions and comments. She is so knowledgeable and intelligent Also have to say she looks really lovely with her hair cut like this, first time I have seen it but it is very flattering!
The countess is very dedicated and really knows whats best for mapperton. The drawrings by David where lovely. Will there be a Spring tour soon or Summer Tour later on of the gardens with the countess? 👑💗
I've been swimming in a natural pool in Germany and was amazed at how different it felt on my skin. Also, the 'mental wellbeing' from swimming around plants was fantastic too. I cannot wait to see your pool transformation at Mapperton.
Lovely conversation between people that have the best interest and integrity of Mapperton. David, very thoughtful and detailed research. Well done, everyone. Enjoying this journey - thank you from the states.
I wanted to say how much I admire you-your parents and your wonderful wife …you are truly inspiring, just goes to show how an amazing American, who embraces UK culture , can be such a valued addition to us, (unlike others who will remain nameless ) carry on your inspirational work ❤
This reminded me of my cousins who swam in the pond all their lives. My mom and her sister took us to a cement public pool. They were afraid to go in and swim. They said it smells funny. Natural is the best.
We love your drawings, David!! You are spreading education and awareness to all of us!! Good luck with the pool. We can't wait to see Julie swimming around with the plants!!
This is an extraordinary effort. I love the layering effect which circulate the water and prevents the algae. What a British treasure. Thank you Mapperton for doing this treasure.
For once a leak pays off in the long run. This may be a somewhat expensive fix at first but it seems that after the initial investments your pool costs will be a couple of solar panels and a bit of end of season gardening. The flowering plants will look so lovely and the clean water so healthy to swim in. This huge old pool revamp is going to add a spectacular new element to your gardens.
You have no idea how much I treasure these videos. 🥰 Hearing the history of the estate, family and village is enthralling. Seeing history being made as you make these groundbreaking decisions that seem to not only be saving your estate making it self sustainable, but you include the family, town, county and local artisans and businesses. Sending you all love and wishes of success ❤️
The serpentine concept sounds lovely, and I think it will bring a pleasing contrast to the rectangular shape of the pool. The “pond” feel also works best with the natural shade of the water in a 300+/- year old pool.
David's plans are accurate. I've used these practices for my own ponds over the years with great success. I wasn't sure about the tires and toxins in the rubber, but other than that, this is all great. Mom's irregular design is very pleasing.
Another great video. I really felt for David when you showed us his 'rough' drawing. I winced inside for him. However, the drawing was very clear and did *exactly* what it needed to do!. I love the Countess' holistic approach...she is thinking about this from every angle [literally]. Now I just need to know if Julie's going to be able to swim happily once what is done reaches beautiful maturity.
I enjoy following this project. All 3 of you, Luke, the Countess and David do an excellent job explaining what is going on. All 3 are also very personable!
This is a very interesting video. I really appreciate the Countess's questions and comments. I look forward to seeing these plans come to life! David's information and sketches are very interesting. Love from Vermont
As all ladies of the house know they know best, what a great vlog and thank you for considering the environment, the pool/pond is going to be truly exceptional.
Looking absolutely gorgeous. Though as a vegetable gardener, I am aware that tyres contain toxic chemicals and metals that will eventually leach out. I’m sure there are lots of other safe alternatives.
Very lovely and creative idea. Thank you for sharing it. A wonderful way for nature to return and people to swim as well. I agree with a few others who have suggested rethinking the use of old tires in the pool. The chemicals used in them are dangerous. They would wind up being a poison in the pool. Unfortunately our instinct to recycle them has turned out to be a problem. Best of luck in making this dream a reality. Can’t wait to see it finished.
I have been looking forward with much interest for your plans. If I were transforming a pool in a less formal setting, I would never consider "orderly" symmetrical arrangements with the plants, e/g the adjacent topiary. However, for Mapperton I would keep the traditional "ordered" theme of these gardens by having symmetrical plantings. I agree with Her Ladyship about a natural look, however I feel that the variety and density of different plants will achieve this even though they are within symmetrical planting boxes. Her Ladyship's step idea also looks great. Thank you.
Instead of using tires (if David was planning on doing so), what about using branches (trees or shrubs) and tying them together with twigs. Use different size rocks to weigh down the planters. This way no use of old tires and motorized batteries (or similar) in the pool. Using natural materials and no worries about anything leaking out.
Should be really wonderful once comp!ete!! Love the portrait of Luke as a child in the background 🙂 It may be mostly about the house and grounds but I love the "Family" dynamic it really brings the estate to life and keeps me watching week after week. Thank you for sharing with us!
The coloring in made me smile. Perhaps Mapperton needs a coloring book of the gardens and house! That is if you don’t already have something like that.
I found that so interesting. I loved hearing the logic and planning behind the scenes instead of just seeing the end result of a potted plant. So much thoughtful effort behind each part of the plan. Very interesting!!
I love the idea of the stairs being disguised by the planters, it will be an enchanted pool to swim in and admire from all views. Solar panels for the win - free electric.. does England get enough sun for solar? - my little poke at English Summer for Julie ;) How to disguise solar panels so no one see's them or.. how to float a solar panel?
This is just brilliant, I cannot wait to see the results! I'm even thinking about a tiny pond in my tiny yard. And I love your hippy dippy Mum, we could be sisters! Wisconsin USA
My goodness what a wonderful vlog. It will be so great to see done. The countess is a gem I always love to hear her volgs. Keep up the good work, it's truly marvelous.
The Countess is absolutely spot on with her ideas.V interesting.Julie is brave but I have to admit that, though it will look lovely with the enviorns and be wonderful ecologically, I'm too squeemish to swim or stand in a pool with toads and other pond dwellers!
Oh my goodness, one of the images of the “example” ponds looked so much like the pond in Pride and Prejudice. I completely want a reenactment of that pond scene once this pool is finished!!
Your pool is fascinating and the outcome will be beautiful. I grew up with a pool and swimming in the Great Lakes of Michigan. The one nice thing about a pool no mucky bottoms and sand lol. At the lake house five feet out is gross muck and it’s at the end of the dock too. My parents Plot Hound knock me off the dock , muck and a giant spider web on the dock ladder lol. My Dad found it way too funny, me not so much lol. 🇺🇸
I really hope you look into biochar, which as you submerge in the water, acts as a filter, drawing out nutrients into the biochar to 'charge' it. Then, it can be put back in the soil as a fertilizer, sequestering carbon in the soil, where it belongs, and voila! You have a clean pool. Johannes Lehmann at Cornell University in NY has done copious research on biochar. Cheers!
I’ve heard that tires become pollutants. There was a try to create artificial reefs that turned to an environmental disaster. There must be something else that will float.
What you should do is fix the Tennis 🎾 Court and let a local tennis team use it for practice for a monthly fee that turns over into a monthly donation but of course I don't know if you can do something like that
I'm not understanding why the planters around the steps rather than opposite the steps - I would think it would be less creepy crawly to get in at the clear water and leave the plants and critters to themselves in the other corners.
Yes, I concur with the Countess : ) ... Aqua-phonics, I think it is called ? : / ... It can be utilized also to grow food, and Mapperton can use what is grown for the business of Mapperton : ) ... Say, what will be done during the winter months?

There are solar powered pumps/lights that could be used with each barrel. This would eliminate the need for a central pump. This would avoid an "emergency" if the central pump fails. The lights would provide illumination at night. I am an engineer!
I know you haven't asked for feedback, but I'm not sure about swimming with all that foliage or - more to the point - amongst the frogs and other critters that go with the plant territory. I'd go with painting the inside of the pool a lovely blue, adding chlorine and a couple of those automatic pool cleaners that "walk" around the bottom of the pool keeping it clean. I guess I need to go and wash my mouth out for daring to suggest such a thing 😛
The wooden barrels would rot much faster than a barrel in still wxater, why not use clay pots, the red p clay, baked like bricks and for huge potted plants, the'll last forever economic (nothing like the 2 Dollars I bought them for on the Mexican border) but they are also a natural element...
Your endeavor has prompted me to seriously research for an upcoming investment. We hope to create a swimming hole with rope swing maybe zip line for the big kids.
Although tires are being recycled are you aware they are made with petroleum and are not necessarily ''clean" and may leach, over time, into the water? I may be wrong but worth further research as your intent is to make this a human swimming pool.
Don’t use any fertilizer on the lawns, shrubs, etc., natural or otherwise in the garden. It’s high in phosphate concentration and will get into the ground water.
At 10:40 she says they don’t have intensive agriculture. But the initial water test did show a high phosphate concentration. And I guess that’s what the plants will do, is utilize the phosphate and reduce it in the pool water.
Have you seen David's idea for using soaker hose for what he terms as a "bubble barrier?" It might look great in the Mapperton pool. Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EGaZTTiIe_0.html Also, would two smaller pumps at each end be more efficient for overcoming the resistance of the very long lengths of air pipework ? I'm am unsure of the physics involved.
Rectangular edge boxes - If you’re a serious swimmer and bang into a box edge, you can get really hurt. The pool won’t be good for anything but dog-paddling😩. If anyone jumps in and hits a box corner - bad news. Not swimmer friendly.
Will the plants be able to stay in the pool all year, or will they have to be taken out in winter and stored? What will all this cost? Those are important considerations when implementing garden and pool designs. :)
Hi Bridget - this has been posted out to you - the postal service from the UK to the US is very slow at the moment! We hope you enjoy it when you receive it.
Natural pool. Your family will be only swimmers or the govt would make all sorts of safety decisions for you that would just destroy the ambience. My American govt would. Parks are built for safety not nature. Cut down trees because we need a parking lot who cares if raises temp 25 degrees in Arizona in July! Whoops on a tangent…your pool will be lovely as only British gardenscaping is. Love following along with the makeover.😊👋🏼🇺🇸💕
Interesting discussion - even if I am not sure that I have understood everything, like at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vxTPhS6r_28.html it is said that the fountain water overflows into the pool, but how would this go together with "no continual pool filling" at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vq_9aj_sSPo.html ?
Wow! Brilliant. I think it ceases to be a pool, in the traditional swimming sense, and is turned into a pond with natural filtration provided by aquatic plants. After all, you're all used to waving to passing frogs anyway.
Maybe they’ll make a small Lap pool somewhere else, with an endless water-pushing feature. They don’t require much space and one could actually have a real swim. After laps, join the crowd at the water feature. 🙂
