Most of my videos are aimed a homeowners in the UK looking to do some work to their property, so the obvious question is, will the Labour Party help them build a house extension?
The answer is no. But they could if they adopted one policy, and it isn’t about reforming the planning system. That policy could also reduce the number of people bidding for homes every year, thus making it easier for supply to meet demand. Keep watching and I will explain.
The Labour party manifesto has got a lot to say about building new homes but this policies might actually make house extensions more expensive. If the cut or abolished VAT on work to private homes the Labour Party could instantly boost the UK construction industry, remove demand on housing and make house extensions more affordable.

Great video & agree with all of that - thank you. Seem to have a perfect storm on construction costs, interest rates, rent controls, lack of skilled labour, student accommodation shortages, our taxation system, the planning system and building standards reforms all putting pressure on the housing market at once. Our politicians don't seem to understand the difference between intention and result :(

So true! All these different requirements, created with the best intentions, are interconnected but unrelated. Insurance, health and safety, the building regs, nett zero etc are all administered by single interest groups who don’t seem the know the industry could be overwhelmed.

Its a nice idea. Also, they could introduce minimum sizes to builders, i bought a 2 bed new build which was 80sq.m in 2010, i moved to a new build estate built in 2013, the 3 beds were 80 sq.m and 2 beds 66sq.m so i had to pay premium to get a 4 bed to get extra space. If new builds were a decent size then people wouldnt need to move out of their new build back to an old 3 bed semi to get more space. Really doesnt make sense. New builds are lovely and terrible at same time. Worst still, now with home office trends the loving rooms get even smaller to add this extra space.

I cannot agree more. As a builder I refuse to re-register for VAT, This is a penalty on building work. Homing is not a luxury item.

Can I move my pedestrian entrance in the UK without planning perms? I have a path that terminates next to my driveway gate, I want to move it to exit directly in front of the property onto the road.

Thanks for getting in touch. It’s not possible to give a simple answer to your question without more info. I suggest you contact the local planning department to discuss this. Bring photos and drawings, if possible. You need to know if your property has permitted development rights and whether your proposal complies. The proximity to the boundary will matter in your case.

Very insightful. Labour might make it easy for foreign skilled labour to come in.
