Will the largest dam in Africa ever be completed? | Inside Story

The Grand Renaissance Dam being built in Ethiopia is planned to be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.
But the multi-billion dollar project, which Ethiopia says is vital for its future economy, is dogged by dispute and delays.
Egypt and Sudan also rely on the river Nile.
Egyptian farmers fear they'll have less water to irrigate their fields.
Ethiopian government leaders deny they'll cause water shortages.
Talks have been deadlocked for months, and leaders have vowed to iron out their differences peacefully.
In the latest meeting on Monday, Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
He blames a company run by the Ethiopian military for the delay.

The water rain in Ethiopia, it belongs to Ethiopia. Egypt should be grateful for every drop of water that Ethiopia so generously allows to flow outside its border. Unfortunately, Egypt had taken advantage of Ethiopia generously since beginning of time. If Egypt continues their backstabing scheme like assassination again, Ethiopia should consider daming the river even more and redirecting the water to flow Eastward and fertilize agriculture in East Ethiopia. and Eritrea and Djibouti.

Did she said that Nile River doesn’t originated from Ethiopia? Her level of incompetence is amazing, sadly comes as no surprise, The river Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile. The White Nile is considered to be the headwaters and primary stream of the Nile itself. The Blue Nile, however, is the source of most of the water and silt. The White Nile is longer and rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source still undetermined but located in either Rwanda or Burundi. It flows north through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and South Sudan. The Blue Nile begins at Lake Tana in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 and flows into Sudan from the southeast. The two rivers meet just north of the Sudanese capital of Khartoum. The northern section of the river flows north almost entirely through the Sudanese desert to Egypt, then ends in a large delta and flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

Abs K That’s a complete lie the USA does not support Egypt. The Ethiopians need to flex their muscles because nothing good can ever come of a racist Arab/ Muslim nation invading a Black/ Christian nation. If you want to see how Americans really are watch if Egypt attempts to attack its economy will be under crippling sanctions and their will be demands to bomb Egypt!

I think Ethiopia is having difficulty in completing the project. Why doesn't World Bank come forward to help? Arabs are needlessly worried on it. The rule of thimb is 'if it is a dam (project) for hydro power it doesn't endanger the rights of the lower riparian countries or their ownership of the water' - as it is the run of the river project where water 'flow' is utilised & (all of it is) let out downstream.

It is not the matter of 'If', it is the matter of 'when' to finish this dam. We are the one who responsible the delay of construction, but 100% the dam will be real either Egyptian or other countries like it or not. I really upset we are going to deal with Egypt on our own resource, the Egyptian should be the one who kneel down fo r compromise. I am not saying though we shouldn't care about Egypt. The Egyptian must realize the river is our natural resources, and should treat the situation as so. Just deniying facts can't and shouldn't be part of solutions. Diplomatic solution is what Egyptian pray fo r. F16,F35 ....never stop an angry, thirsty and Hungary people to use what they have at hand.

@@rami735 thanks for being rational, the Nile is for all who is concerned with its usage not "just Ethiopia" thus filling it from one side without agreement may harm relations, we do not deny their benefits from building the dam they have all rights to develop, only the rush to fill reservoir is our concern, unlike lake nasser reservoir the water is at Egypt's borders thus not affecting other upstream countries water needs, it has helped regulating the flood so we could farm year long and not having the lands near the nile flooded and lost, meanwhile they are in upper nile so obviously it will affect downstream water supply with a rushed filling, all we ask is to find agreement on a filling that does not harm downstream needs badly, when we hear that half the farmlands might not get water because they want a rushed 3 year filling of course we are going to oppose shouldn't we?

Dear Ethiopia, since the commencement of the Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam you have been involved in talks with Egypt who is relying on some colonial agreement, and now you are ready to put the Dam into operation you are still talking after ten (10) years; the talk is not likely to end anytime too soon. My advice to you Ethiopia is to start to fill the Dam whilst the talks are ongoing, as this will practically demonstrate that the fears of those who are obstructing you may not be realised. For those who have concerns let them see to believe.
