Today we will see if the Suffolk Punch colts will let me trim their feet. I am not a farrier, but I do a little trimming of the colt hooves for one of the first times today.

I was pleasantly surprised to see you putting a bit of a mustang roll on Earl. Nice job under difficult conditions though the Suffolk’s good character shines through. After being a farrier for 50 years, I’m still interested enough to watch this whole video.

Just getting the horse to allow you to pick up its feet is an accomplishment. An animal that strong doesn’t have to let you do that. Kudos to you Jim for staying patiently at it.

our farrier had a broken back when younger. He does 4 shires and a belgian..........without cage. Let's say he gets good deal when he buys good and services from us

I’m very fussy about hooves and I think you did a pretty good job! I have small ponies and I’ve done my share of trimming them. I used to trim my riding horses here and there as well, but it’s very hard work. I usually use a farrier now. He can get through them quickly and my time can be used somewhere else. I loved how patient you were and never lost your temper. I think that’s where people get into trouble - expecting the youngsters to stand still like it’s no big deal, when it’s a big deal to them until proven otherwise. After they find out that it truly isn’t a big deal and that they can stand there and balance on three legs, then they will be like your other horses. But you know all of that. Anyway, good job and I look forward to more of Earl and Duke. They are so shiny and healthy looking. You should be very proud of how well your horses look and behave. It says a lot about their owner.

It wasn’t until I started trimming our horses’ hooves that I realized farriers earn every dollar…and are still underpaid. Thanks for this look at the good and not so good behavior - it’s exactly what mine did at first and I doubted myself a lot. They still get ornery every so often when they remember they’re bigger than me, but all in all have come a long ways, as yours will. I admire and applaud your patience and gentleness with the horses…makes for good, quiet horses. My dad, who is Amish, greatly enjoys watching your videos when we visit.

You said and did it the thing that helps the most "Calm" when they were fidgeting, you didn't raise your voice fact I hardly heard you speak at all couple of soft woa's I have seen it many times at various stables that I've delivered hay to. some of the stable hands doing what you just did, that did not have the patience you just shown. and they would yell at the horse's and they reacted accordingly, Got nervious, excited and fidgeted even more. few of them to the point they would not lift their feet at all. they can be stubborn at times. depends on the handler and you showed the right way Jim great job and example of how to do it. thanks for sharing.

Jim, they're looking magnificent! Earl the problem child! I can see the ring halfway down the walls of their hoofs that denotes when you bought them and their feed changed, alters the growth and often leaves marks. It is said that the two hardest jobs on earth are shoeing horses and shearing sheep. Well, they're growing up fast, glossy in the summer coats, fat and sassy. Thanks for the video. Nice job Jim. It’s good to show not everything is easy. Training takes time. For what it’s worth, a Native American horse trainer, mentor, taught me this years ago. A horse’s left from leg is their Grandfather leg. It is wiser & will learn more quickly. The left hind leg is the Father leg. Not as wise but the second easiest to teach. The right hind leg is the teenager leg. It will learn from the Father leg. The right front leg, is the child. Always teach it last. It may sound silly but I always follow that order. Weather cleaning hoofs, trimming or shoeing. Maybe because I believe that order keeps them calmer, it does.

I think they they stood great I know that they gave you a work out been there before but for yearlings they did just as good as two year Olds and it's good that you are teaching them to shoe with out stocks In my area there are not a lot of farrier that have stocks

Good exercise in patience Jim. Very interesting to see their reaction to standing w/out hay. Your other horses were really switching their tails. (Maybe flys) The colts’ tails never moved. Nice job Jim. Duke and Earl are shining. Linda Tellington-Jones in her book "Ultimate Horse Behavior and Training" tells of picking the hoof up just off the ground and making several small circles in each direction and then tapping the hoof toe on the ground before putting it down. Works great when the horse behaves like Earl did. Stay safe.

I have watched farrier videos and now I have watched the average farmer do it. The farriers make it look so easy but as you have illustrated, not easy at all. It can be quite the workout and not easy to maintain your patience with a skittish horse. Nice job Jim.

I understand the work out you get! You did both of them, good for you., you are in good shape from all the physical work you do logging and the way you farm🙌🏼 About 20 years ago when my strength/ health was pretty good still, I could trim my own horses hooves, but it would take me two days to do just one because it was very tiring, I would feel shakey and weak after! I get a good work out just picking out my boy’s feet as he doesn’t like holding them up. I have a few different types of arthritis’s, so it is good exercise for me! Just doing Isometric exercises like this is a good work out! For any one who would like to try an isometric exercise, sit with back against the wall just using your legs, see how long you can stay there! 🤠🇨🇦

Not the problem. Horses and esp. colts/stallions/geldings play fight by biting eachothers legs to get them down. They need to learn the difference between that play and lifting feet for a human.

Great video, Jim!! Hoof work is a backbreaking task, even when they behave. When they fight you, it is really difficult. They do trust you, so next time should be a bit easier.

So glad they are good natured , I think they have a lot of respect and feel secure with you , I noticed that when you turned them loose with the blacks , they came right to you , knowing you keep them safe . I am sure being young they just get bored or don't like being held in one spot . I know that had to be exhausting , they are so heavy and strong even as young as they are , and you don't have any extra meat on your bones . I think these guys are gonna be some really good horses , they really act calm for their age .

😂 You got your selv a workout there Jim. Not practising enough makes trimming a tuff job. 😉 I feel with you. I trimmed my boy and others for over 10 years, just as part of the hobby. But I let my colt get his first trimms by a professional, since they are much faster and patience of these baby's must be learned as well as you know. I just wanted to sett him up with a good first experience. Now one year later, I do it myself inn between. He is a good bøy. But I likes to argue a little with one of his front feet... Always the last one I pick up. I wonder if that is a game for him 🤣 and I agree, backfeets are the easy ones. Hoves looking good, like your trimming 👍

Have you tried the cross over on the back feet ? That is when you stand behind the foot on the ground and cross over the other foot to work on , you can lean up against the grounded leg and they can lean on you and both of you are relaxed . Seen this on trimming school on you tube .

Lots to learn here n Thanks for sharing n showing the reality of training to work with the feet! I think because they were tied at the entrance they are used to going in to eat n this was part of the impatience? You never lost your pace n calmness n horses mirror this. You know better than anybody it's best to train now before they are heavier n stronger. They are really growing n getting big muscle.

A tip for having them stand quietly while trimming I've seen online a ppl swear by is running a 6 in or so of tape down their nose while trimming. Sounds crazy but it distracts them and gives them something else to think about.

I once had a filly colt that. Needed hoof trimming but she was a kicker so I took a soft rope and tied one foot up to her halter for a while - didn't leave her alone for long but laid hands on her and talked to her the whole time - she never kicked after that !

Brenda and Jim, I love your flowers! So pretty. Forgot to say how handsome Duke and Earl are, my goodness they are big and gorgeous they are! Hey Jim, have you had that dark spot by your temple checked? I have been an outdoor person my whole life, as has my family. My father has fair skin and has had lots of skin cancer removed. JIm, Don't cut yourself short on your farrier work, When I was young, I had a couple of saddle horses, I could trim their front feet, but, was always afraid I'd get kicked if I tried the back feet. Ended up selling them when I got my own dairy farm

It takes patience and strength to train a young horse to give the feet and keep still. You have both. But sometimes a little reward after the horse has behaved alright can help, too. I have trained many a horse, sometimes even quite unwieldy ones, to give their feet and stand still. My son is a farrier, has shod for me almost 30 years, and I don't want him to get hurt, neither by my horses nor by anybody else's.

Another thing that helps with young horses is to do a little on each foot at a time. For example, I will clean each hoof, then trim, and then file. That way they don't get tired of holding one foot up for a long time for me to do everything at once. It seems to be less of a "big deal" to some young horses until they are more used to it. But as always, the way you handle all your horses so gently and with such patience is beautiful to watch.
