Returning the Rock (2002): It's 300 years since Gibraltar was handed over to the British, and controversy has erupted between Spain and Britain once again.
Subscribe to Journeyman here: ru-vid.com_c...
The colony of just 6.5. sq km has been in British hands since the early 18th century. It was an important staging post for the Empire, and played a vital role in both world wars. On 14 occasions the rock has come under siege from Spain, but Britain has always clung on to its colony.
"Spain has never liked the fact that they lost Gibraltar and have consequently made difficulties" says the Governor of Gibraltar. Now the strategic importance has declined, and with Britain and Spain partners in the EU, the British government views it as an anachronism. "There is enormous room for Anglo Spanish relations that for many years have been conditioned by the claim on Gibraltar, " says Alberto Aza.

Gonzalo Fernández Whether my country is a poor country or whether it has got no power in international matters is another story. I didn't say that I'm here to represent India or that India is with the UK over the Gibraltar dispute. I just said that I am with UK. Neither did I say that India can do this or do that. I didn't bring the voice of Indians into the picture. I just said that I am person from another country, a third party and that I back the UK. Nevertheless, it's quite obvious that if there's a dispute between two powerful people, even a person with no power can simply give an opinion as to who is right or wrong.

+David Keith things the British get from the EU: free exports, free imports, investment from other EU countries, investment from non-EU companies in the EU market ( just so you know the bigger the market, the bigger the investment), easier access to other EU markets, easier access to immigrants (workforce), free movement around the most visited continent, international unconditional political support from other EU nations, unconditional military support from other EU nations... Things the British lose to the EU: some political power, some money (compared to the size of the market that amount is ridiculous), control over their borders for other European immigrants. What a bad balance, don't you think?, I clearly can see the reasoning that led you to leave.

sbaker190189 I would be very surprised to be honest. The ties with Britain are very strong, the £ is and will be very reliable as a currency. The Euro is on extremely shaky ground. And plus, the UK guarantees military protection that keeps Gibraltar safe from any nonsense from the Spanish. The border issue is far better kept moot with the UKs economic clout behind it than an independent Gibraltar. I know Gibraltar is a strong online gaming hub. So having the pound, favourable tax levies and the backing of the UK and all her assets if needed is a no brainer for them. And they are self governing. So, i would be extremely surprised if they chose the Eurozone over a very reliable and stable currency etc.
@SiVlog1989
@SiVlog1989 7 лет назад
Fek The First thanks for your insight. I was wondering because in days of British rule, Singapore was regarded as the Gibraltar of the East. After Britain left, they ended up (over time) a state in their own right, rather than integrate the rest of Malaysia... I guess there's significant differences between the two examples

One thing that impressed me was a chap called Antonio (he called himself Toni for short, runs a Fish and Chips restaurant in Grand Casemates Square) who conversed in more than just English and Spanish, he could also converse in German and Italian. I got close to the Apes on the top of the Rock but not too close as to spook them, indeed one of them very nearly snatched a camera out of a tourist's hand. It wasn't "given", it was more like multiple European powers (including England) caused multiple civil wars because they didn't want a strong Franco-Spanish alliance to be created and after the British realised they had lost, they took advantage of the horrid situation Spain was in which they were one of the main factors that caused it and took one of the most valuable pieces of land in Europe and with Spain being devastated by the wars caused by those powers, the king couldn't go to reconquer Gibraltar because it had to work on rebuilding itself. So it wasn't Spain giving Gibraltar to Britain, it was more like Britain and multiple other European powers creating unstability and civil unrest in Spain and once the British realised they had lost they seized valuable territory that Spain couldn't take back because it had to focus on rebuild itself.

***** It's not an occupation if it is through a democratic process. The definition of an occupation is "the control of a nation or territory by foreign armed forces", and neither are the british foreign, seeing as gibraltarians identify as British, nor is there ANY martial law... You seriously overestimate how much the british government cares about this little rock. The point is that we have standards. If a majority people under UK rulership no longer wish to be, they get their sovereignty back. Look at Scotland's attempt recently. Look at the last 100 years of gradually handing back territories. And what constitutes "their land"? It certainly isn't geography, or else they would have given Ceuta and Co. back to Morocco. adeel mirza I will endeavour to correct every single one of your mistakes, but will ignore your grammar for the sake of my sanity. Firstly, read the above response to see why none of these were occupations, (unless of course you consider every American living in America today to be a occupier against the will of.. who exactly? (lol) ). Next, drop the racism, you have no free pass from me just because you're from the third world. Next, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are all part of the British isles. Britons can't occupy themselves. Now please look up the difference between the USA and the 13 colonies, and decide which one subjugated the red Indians. The fact that you think Canada, Australia and New Zealand were ruled against their will is baffling, truly. You hate Britain, I get that, but you need better reasons for it to be justified.

Indeed, the Spaniards I spoke to feel that Gibraltar is an employment lifeline with regards to Spain's economic problems. In fact, the population of La Línea de la Concepción seems to feel that the Madrid government are alienating them with the talk about a charge of €50 each way to cross the border. This is more akin to returning Berlin to German control in 1991, and returning Hong Kong and Macao to China in 1997 and 1999. Small trading and military colonies are being returned frequently, and this is one of them. Returning Gibraltar to Spain is not some crazy unprecedented phenomena.

Why is this question even being asked? The only people who matter are those living there and they certainly don't want to be part of Spain. The UN charter supports self determination and Spain is a member of the UN so this is a good test of Spain's commitment to democratic process and international peace. So far it is not doing so well, similar to Argentina wanting to claim the Falkland Islands. It must be part of the Spanish character to want what they can't have.

Do you want the history class, Ok then: 1st When the moors invade southern Spain they create a caliphate in Granada that includes Ceuta and Melilla. So technically the muslims were the ones that consolidated that region in the year 711. 2nd When Morroco was created as a country (late in the 20 century) Ceuta an Melilla has more tha na 1000 years of being hispanic, and since 1492 they were integral part of Spain. 3rd. "Spanish colonies in Morocco"?!?! What happens to you? Spain hasn't got colonies (not like UK). All that "super" important people that appears in this video speaking about international politic when it's clear they don't know simplely anything, are kind of stupid. The unique reason because Spain doesn't give back Ceuta and Melilla to Morocco is the following one: When Spanish troops invaded Melilla (Ceuta was invaded by Portugal, I suppose you didn't know that, not you not the people speaking so happily in this video) Morocco didn't exist as a country, not even as a kingdom...the inhabitants of Northen Morocco were a mix of berebere tribes, who far away could see them as a country. So Spain got two cities that couldn't be claimed by anyone, because Morocco would born nearly 500 years later. But when UK got Gibraltar, Spain was already a country, and it had been for almost other 250 hundred years before. Spain can claim Gibraltar, but Morocco can't do the same with Ceuta and Melilla. And that two spanish cities are far from being a colony...they have more autonomy that the one Gibraltar would have in all his liar history. The already are Autonomous Cities, while Gibraltar remains a colony. So please, open a history book before speaking so freely...same for all that politicians that say in this video that Spain's reason for not giving Ceuta and Melilla back is that "they are part from the metropolitan Spain". Spain has not "metropolitan" or "colonial" territory...we don't have any colonies since 1960...can UK say the same? Of course, NO

Comparing Ceuta and Melilla with Gibraltar is stupid. Ceuta was conquered from the Muslims in 1415 and Melilla in 1497. Spanish cities like Granada were taken in 1492 and Pamplona is only part of Spain since 1521. Spain itself only exists since 1469. Gibraltar is a colony. Spain is simply one of many countries (like Turkey or Egypt) which span two continents, thanks to the 7 Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla.
@joherold

And who did the Muslims conquer those lands from? How far do you want to go back? That's why this entire argument is bullshit and is only used to stir up local patriotism.. See Argentina and the Falklands for example..
@azzam9252
@azzam9252 7 лет назад
The Argentine claim on the Falklands is purely on geographic grounds and is pretty shaky. The Falklands were part of the Spanish Empire but never part of an independent Argentina. With Gibraltar its different. It was an integral part of the modern Spanish state which was taken by the UK in exchange of ceasing hostilities on the country (together with Minorca and a few decades of monopoly on the slave trade). Just as the UK returned Menorca to Spain it should have done the same with Gibraltar.

why should Britain give Gibraltar over? it has been British now over 300 years, longer than when the Spanish controlled it. in an age of self-determination where nearly all of the population voted to remain British, why should they be ignored? Spain attach importance to the Rock to divert attention away from their failing economy, mass unemployment and scandals which seemed to be very common among their politicians and royal family. you cannot force 30,000 people to change their nationality in todays world. Also Britain has every right to keep Gibraltar, given to them in the Treaty of Utrecht and then renewed in Treaty of Paris and Versailles. Spanish claim to the Rock is petty and has no legal standing

It is a hard issue to discuss, however, the Gibraltarian people's will must be preserved. I'm Spanish and, furthermore, I live in Algeciras, so I get firsthand knowledge about the problem here. I do think that by pushing the situation towards a flag changing Spain is creating more problems than solutions, you will never change people's feelings and thoughts, so it is not a good strategy. Gibraltar has never been a problem for us, the people who live together; as a man said during the video, when I think of my hometown, it is unavoidable for me to think of that rock, which I also feel part of my culture (since we use a lot of words and expressions from there, and vice-versa). However, the former Prime Minister Caruana is utterly wrong when it comes to Ceuta and Melilla. I can understand what he was trying to do by comparing one situation to the other. Nonetheless, he avoids the fact that Ceuta and Melilla both have been Spanish since 1497, Meilla, and 1668, Ceuta. We never conquered those cities beign Moroccan, because Morocco didn't exist at that time. Thus, taking this into account, it is totally understandable what Spain is claiming, since Gibraltar was took by the UK as an act of piracy since they were not at war against Spain, they were supporting one of the pretender to the Spanish throne. They first conquered the territory on behalf of Archiduke Charles of Austria (they did the same in Menorca), but once the Treaty of Utrech was signed, the Union Jack was already on the rock. This is the act of piracy Spain is denouncing, this is why Spain claims Gibraltar's sovereignty. Nevertheless, as I stated above, if the Gib people decide to stay British, we must respect it, it is impossible to change people's minds by force. I think Spain has never learnt from its mistakes, and it will never do.

Spain has said that under it Gibraltar could have self autonomy. So, it could be like Hong Kong, where Spain only controls its defence and foreign affairs. The Gibraltar flag could remain, as that is said to actually be a Spanish flag. (And, not those ensign flags, with the Union Jack top left.) And, the British military could remain, as both Spain and Britain are in NATO. Could also make the handover on 10 September. But then, Spain must give up Spanish Morocco to Morocco.

Soooo, let me get this straight....While the United Kingdom "may" be noodling about concerning the fate of 30,000 patriotic and loyal Gibraltarians, in 1982 during the Falklands War, London sent the biggest Task Force since WWII over 6000 kilometers away to "liberate" some 2,932 Island Citizens? There are more SHEEP on the Islands than people soooo....this illuminates a fascinating view of Britain's world view! Argentina's mistake is that it actually invaded thus triggering that old fashioned sense of outrage the British Public could be so famous for. That said, what else could be so much more important down there in the South Atlantic than the possible fate of 30,000 Gibraltarians much closer to home?
@bermudatim4817
@bermudatim4817 9 лет назад
I am not Spanish for the first part and wouldn't wish a Spanish Invasion of the Rock! I just found it interesting that Great Britain was willing to go 6000+ kilometers to almost literally the ass-end of the world to liberate a couple of thousand Farmers and their sheep while at the same time noodling about concerning the possible fate of 30,000 loyal and patriotic Gibraltarians. There are of course many conspiracy theories about the possibility of Oil/Natural Gas reserves in the waters around the Falkland Islands but, at this point, who knows? The People of Gibraltar have been British Subjects since 1704 when the Rock was captured by an Anglo-Dutch expedition and that is 300+ years of continued allegiance to the United Kingdom. I do think that if Spain tried to invade again as it has in the past, it would cause an enormous political/military push back by the British who have been known historically to dig their heels in and grow exceedingly stubborn in the face of foreign threats! Now here is where Argentina very seriously miscalculated in its reading of the British character!

Will Spain return these places to Morocco? The short answer is NO, The UK has no right to return Gibraltar to anyone since Gibraltar isn't under our control. Gibraltar is independent and they voted to remain under the protection of the Britain. The only people who can hand Gibraltar to Spain are the people of Gibraltar themselves. We don't run territories like the Spanish do. We don't seek to control their internal affairs and they can vote at any time to leave us unlike those in the Spanish protected territory. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_protectorate_in_Morocco#mediaviewer/File:Morocco-spanish-protectorate-1955-a.svg

There is no difference in between the British possesion of Gibraltar and the Spanish ditto of Ceuta and Melilla. Both are equally wrong and should be given back. This documentary shows a very one-sided version of the story. It is the Falklands all over. People were brought there in the first place by the Brits, an act illegal in accordance with international law. The Gibraltarians are welcome to stay...but they have to understand that they are living in Spain. This is nothing more than modern colonialism..something the Brits do well.
@Sangrenegra9
@Sangrenegra9 10 лет назад
1) Britons settled in the Falklands because THEY WERE ENTITLED TO. Nobody lived there before they were claimed. The first human to set foot on the islands was an English mariner called John Strong in 1690. Yes, SIXTEEN NINETY. The strait between the islands was named after Lord Falkland, who had financed the expedition. So there you have it. 1690, NOT 1833, as Anglophobic bullshit-artists like to pretend. 1833 was the year they were reclaimed by Britain following an illegal Argentinian takeover of a mutineers' colony. 2) The majority of people in Gibraltar are of a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese and Maltese descent, rather than They have every right to live there as they want to. Gibraltar was ceded to Britain in perpetuity by Spain. Geography has fuck all to do with it. It is no more a part of Spain than Portugal or Andorra are. 3) The more you bandy the word 'colonialism' about, in all the wrong contexts, the weaker its impact becomes. Colonies are places ruled directly by external state. Seeing as Gibraltar and the Falklands are both administered by locally-elected governments, calling them 'colonies' is both dishonest and pathetic.

British people complain about companies like Starbucks and Google who avoid paying UK tax by registering in places like Luxemburgh , but when it comes to Spanish people avoiding tax by registering in Gibraltar then its OK. There are more companies registered in Gibraltar than people. If you can't see that you are being screwed over, I dont know what will.

Spanish Armada was once powerful until they faced the new beast on the block...The Royal Navy. The tides of history changed. The Spanish are as bitter as the French. Don't fuck with Britannia. She always wins when it matters.

a) It was settled previously by the British. b) The Argentinian settlement was authorised by the British and the island was never owned by Argentinians. c) There were mutinies, murders and general discontent in the Argentinian settlement. The British ask the Argentinian TROOPS to leave and they did so. The settlement eventually destroyed it first. Discovered by Britain, colonised by Britain and with a population that consider themselves British. Proximity means nothing; Ireland isn't British.

And Spain should return territories it occupies in Africa back to Morocco if you believe Gibraltar is part of Spanish sovereignty, at least Britain took Gibraltar by a treaty, not occupation and Gibraltarians had been offered choice to decide over the future of their territory in more than a once and opted to remain British though ........

@Andrew-is7rs
@Andrew-is7rs 7 лет назад
Orion meteor Youre a joke. The Spanish would have to invade Gibraltar to "cut electricity" as they make their own little fella (3 stations), and have just awarded a £100+ contract to make another one. And you can't "block" the shipping lanes. If you tried to hijack a private owned ship your boys will be thrown in prison. The UK can just use a patrol vessel (ie Sabre....who already sent you home with your tail between your legs after firing warning shots over a guardia vessel) or a larger vessel if you dont behave yourselves. Piracy, terrorism, hijackings, restrictions on free movement of trade are all illegal and the UK will deal with you accordingly and throw your lads in prison. Now stop this nonsense. Not even the Russians would be so stupid, so why do you think for one second your lot can? Youre embarrassing yourself now

Regarding closing the border - Well, that was tried in the 1980's, but didn't work. And, there was a time in the Cold War when West Berlin had its borders closed, which also didn't work.

@erikugartezarraga4471
@erikugartezarraga4471 7 лет назад
+joherold That's not entirely true so it's not true. Only the so-called New Territories had a 99-year lease, the rest of Hong Kong, which made up most of the land and where the overwhelming majority of the people lived was ceased permanently to the UK. It was Margareth Thatcher who signed a treaty with the Chinese goverment in 1984 where it was established that the entire land of Hong Kong would be given back to China once the 99-year lease (that applied only for the New Territories) was over on 1997.
