18 year old Irish Traveller Lizzie prepares for her wedding and looks ahead towards married life... and what’s expected of her.
In Irish Traveller culture, many girls associate marriage with freedom. However the clear and defined roles of young men and women in gypsy and traveller communities, mean that, for Lizzie, married life may not be that much different.
As Lizzie prepares to get the married and leave the family trailer, her 13 year old sister Margaret is lined up to take over her role, leaving school to help at home, clean for hours every day and care for her younger siblings.

I never understand how they get away with pulling the kids out of school to clean and play the parent? That is literally abuse and if it were happening outside of gypsy culture, social care would be involved. I see Thelma explained it, but it's just horrific.

I'm in mainstream american culture, and i wouldn't say this is common, but i used to know a girl, 18, who spends most of her time helping to raise her (many) younger siblings. I'll be shocked if she moves out before she's 25. But she seems content with it most of the time. She's homeschooled and has a reading disability that has thus far prevented her from finishing high school, so it's not like she can really get an education or a good job. Certainly not everyone can live that lifestyle, and it probably depends a lot on your relationship with your family, but for some it's not a bad option.

I think the wedding day IS the best day of their life, sadly. It's the one time they have a say in anything, the only time they decide how something is done. Yes! I went to school with travellers and the female travellers were so much more intelligent than their male counterparts. They had the potential to make something of their lives if they stayed in school. For some reason the boys were naturally dumb. All of the boys were in the special class. I think it was just laziness tbh. They never tried. Whereas women grow up being hard workers so they try in school? Idk but female travellers are wayyyyy smarter than male travellers. My intelligent female traveller friend also dropped out age 11. She’s now 19, married with 2 kids. She wanted to be a boxer but wasn’t allowed take classes because she had to stay home and take care of her sisters. She could beat up any boy in our class. Her brothers were allowed take boxing classes. She was absolutely hilarious too. She did steal my pencil case once and only admitted it was her when our teacher checked all our bags and found it in hers 😅. It’s a shame, she was so intelligent and could have made something of herself.

It's not always the woman's choice to stay in school, when taken out at 12, its "must do as mummy and daddy say, or its shunned time" I agree the show only goes on the "bad" stuff, but doesn't show the mammy doing anything, which would be happening! She shows the young ones how to do things, along side them, they made it look like they literally had no mother, and that she doesn't raise her own kids etc.

@Traveller Myths I did just say, "In the south, but not the north" I'm talking about up north. It's mandatory to be in school until you're 18, but there are ways around it, as said. My parents aren't lazy, none of my family are, all very active & productive, and nothing is ever finished, the day is long. The guys work hard, as do the women. As the bride danced with her new husband at their reception, it broke my heart to see her younger sister so sad because she know's she'll be responsible for caring after her family trailer and her 3 younger siblings all by herself. She too, loses her freedom and own right's in essence because I believeshe didn't want to take all this on. The bride kept saying she reckons she'll be okay, but it's obvious that she doesn't really feel ready. When they say “to prevent them from being corrupted by outside influences” what they mean is “Take away their ability to further educate themselves so they’ll remain dumb enough (against their will) that they will do whatever we tell them to do”. Hence marrying so young, marrying the first person that shows interest in them, and having several children, at a young age. All things someone with a higher education would be highly unlikely to do.

It feels like the exaggerated princess weddings are more of a way to compensate for all the things that's been taken away from these girls. They get one day to be princesses and the rest of their lives to be maids, sounds like a sad Cinderella story

I’m not a gypsy, but because of family problems, at about age 11 my sister and I did end up doing all the cooking, cleaning, and we practically raised and taught our younger siblings and ourselves through school. We were homeschooled, but we had good grades. I'm 19 and living on my own now, but honestly, I look at my youngest sister at 13 years old right now and can’t imagine putting that responsibility on her like that. It’s made me who I am, but honestly, I don’t think 13 year old should be put under that responsibility and stress. It definitely makes you grow up faster than you should have to that’s for sure.

I guess I don’t understand. If the idea is to train the daughter up to be a house wife… WHERE is the wife/mother? Does she train up a daughter and dip? Why isn’t she cleaning and caring for HER children??

I think she is in charge of that trailer because there is no way in hell the parents and all of the kids fit in to one trailer. So I would guess the mom is cleaning the other one and the youngest of the kids are with her.
