‪@thehoserz‬ Scott and Taylor have a couple of projects they need Merlin's help on. This 1929 Model A project is by far the most fun to tune up and at times challenging for Merlin, but who doesn't appreciate a good challenge?
Check out their journey to Havasu and some of the fun we had in the shop on their youtube channel: • The Hoserz Head to Hav...

The best way to loosen a model A head from the block is to back the headnuts off a couple of turns & start the motor. Works every time & you wont ruin a head. I have 8 stock model A's & all wil do 60mph

My dad had a model A coupe back in the 1960's speedo never worked but when moms car broke down he towed it back to town with the model A. mom kept riding the brakes in her car because that old model A was doing 60mph towing her Studebaker.

When I was in high school my dad had a 1929 model A truck, I had read they could go up to 65 MPH so I had to try. Got it up to 63 MPH and it was more stable than expected but still faster than you would want to do everyday.

I managed a Skelly station in the 1976 to 1978 and you could buy 103 octane right from the pump. It feed off of two underground tanks and the pump blended the 5 different octane levels. It also was very convenient to manage a service station during the “Fuel Crisis”. 😁 That was the time when they were installing the Unleaded tanks and pumps, we had one. I remember leaning against the pump and having different conversations about gas never getting to a dollar a gallon. 🙄

Merlin, are you considered a master mechanic? The question is a serious one. You have taken engines apart and put them back together in a flash. I know we do not see everything you do but you do it with such ease. Your knowledge of cars, trucks, and motorcycles is extensive. It was like the Ram truck those guys brought to you with the fifth gear issue. You knew what was wrong before you took it off the trailer. Master?

I restored Model A Fords for many years from the ground up, "cans of worms" is an understatement. You either go 100% rebuild and do it right or you cobble them together the best you can....there is no middle ground. There are over 5000 individual parts on a model A and usually 4099 of them are worn out completely. Loosen the head nuts and fire the engine off will blow the head up enough to get them loose.....or you can stuff rope down the spark plug holes and push the head off with the pistons.....if all that fails I had a thin Model T leaf spring sharpened to a razor that I would beat through the head gasket to release the head. Needless to say after years of being the Model A guru in my area I quit working on them.

Beside an enrichment circuit, the '32 carburetor is throated at 1-1/8" as opposed to the stock Model A carburetor which was only 1". So, to get you the 10% HP increase your looking for, you would have to replace the Model A intake manifold with a '32 Model B manifold as well. Otherwise, the 1" diameter stock intake manifold will limit your results and you'd be better off with a clean, rebuilt, stock Model A Zenith carburetor.

That was cool to watch. It's the little things added up. Probably 25 years ago I did an ported stock 4b intake to an Eld. RPM, points to electronic ignition, carb swap(T-Bird 380 to a correct 590cfm) and a solid fan to a flex fan on an old 289. The mods were done about a week apart. Funny thing, the flex fan made the biggest difference on the old "butt dyno."

Good work Merlin! For Model A head removal- Remove dist, hose, spark plugs, and all head nuts, then rotate motor so #1 and #4 pistons are at bottom. Stuff #1 and #4 cylinders full of polyptopylene rope (like ski rope). Then, hit the starter and the head pops right off. No damage.

Merlin if you are ever in Iowa I can show you an old 1925 model TT that I helped a buddy getting running and it still has its original flathead engine in it also with all the original wooden spark boxes and everything!!! I definitely thought that it was really cool when I first seen it!!! After I got it running for my buddy we took it to are local gasoline station and went on a beverage run!!! We live out in the country and are just a couple miles from interstate I-35 and a Kum&Go Wright off of the interstate also!!! On are way back home and about a half mile of gravel we ended up having a cop following us back home but he didn’t end up stopping us!!! The only thing I could think of is he was probably trying to figure out what that ancient thing was out on the road and had to follow us and see for him self!!! The model TT was definitely much faster than I thought it would ever be with the two speed rear end!!! They definitely have a totally different way of driving and controlling the gas, break, timing, and everything else then we have to day for sure!!!! Definitely fun to drive if you have never driven one before!!! Heck I even think that it was running the original gas tank that was under the seat that you sat on!!! Welll Merlin what another awesome video buddy!!!! Remember keep up all the hard work buddy!!!!!

Tying this again. The golden oldy engine that is on that Ford Model A does not have good shielding for modern recording equipment. So what you would need to get rid of the problem is to look at another microphone that can shield against RFI(Radio Frequency Interference) or EMI (Electron Magnetic Interference). Using a Ferrite Core Filter would help but most microphone leads are not that long. You could check with companies who make external microphone for cameras and see what they recommend as a microphone that would be less sensitive to this type of interference. If you are using an Audio Mixing Software you could run that through the software and see if you could filter out this type of interference.. Most people run into this problem when their equipment runs through their 110/220 volt electrical system. This may be a one time problem and you may never run into this type of problem again. Merlin I worked for RadioShack for almost 30 years and RFI/EMI was a common problem that we encountered on a daily basis. People still do depending on how good of A/V cables they use with their Home Theatre Systems now.
