A few weeks back I picked up two laptops from a garage sale with impressive specs for $10. The first laptop was an Intel based system with integrated graphics and the second was this system with an AMD Radeon A8-4500M APU. The AMD A8 is a quad core CPU with an AMD Radeon HD 7640G GPU on the same chip. Today we are going to push this APU to see if it can still hold up to modern(ish) games.

I remember getting an A8, upgrading and tuning the RAM, putting an SSD in and undervolting so it could clock higher. Ran like a dream for cheap.

5400 rpm drives don’t deserve to exist. I don’t get why 2.5 7200 rpm drives aren’t more mainstream

Maybe because they are 10% slower and 50%more energy efficient than 7200RPM drives? They don't deserve the hate, they just need to be used in the right way

I've got one of those that I still use every day for work (emails, word-processing, zoom) the CPU is socketed, you can upgrade it. Very strange feature in a laptop. With dual channel ram, a sata SSD, and an upgraded CPU it's not bad.

mine has 8 gig in it 2 x 4 gigs and a ssd and running windows 11 very good even the 7200 drive it works good just the ram makes my Asus work great

Hi! these old hardware have only 4 years usability now, as Microsoft is going to stop developing win10. So we will only have Linux for these machines by then. So do you think a Linux distro like windows fx or zorin be a good win10 alternative? Just thinking forward.

I know this post is 9 months old but its still relevant. They may stop developing 10 but it will be getting updates till 2025. But just like with 7 (im still on 7) most software still work for years beyond expiration. Just watch what you download and use due diligence and you'll be fine. But I wouldn't worry about it. Yes Zorin is an amazing operating system but I would personally still stick with windows 10 for as long as it works with the software that you need. There are ways to install 11 on older hardware as well so I wouldnt rule it out.
