I snagged up this 60" farm king PTO 3 Point Finish Mower, in hopes to speed up the yard process. No idea if it works, or it the Ford has enough in'r to run it - but we're going to find out!

Be careful using that Derek. If that’s a fixed PTO adapter you really need an overrunning clutch. These are famous for people pushing in the clutch to stop and the momentum of the mower spinning keeps driving the tractor since the PTO is driven off the rear end. Lots of 8n Fords went over the hill cuz they were mowing with a rotary mower and no overrunning clutch.
@Definitelynotyou90
@Definitelynotyou90 2 года назад
Rotary mowers have 50 pound blades with a “stump jumper” that also weighs a metric crap ton this has blades that don’t weigh 10 lbs put together. Not saying your wrong because you are not but this mower is not considered a rotary mower

I added the one way clutch adapter to mine. I also hook limiting chains on the three point and basically makes a bush hog into a finish mower.

this is a finishing mower. not a brush hog. they dont need that extra stuff as they dont have enough spinning mass. i mowed alot useing a 43 ferg with a very similar 3 point finish mower hanging off the back.

About 30 years ago I had a 60" Ford finish mower on the back of a Satoh tractor. Satoh was a re-badged Misubishi. I got all my parts from a Mitsubishi dealer. It was about the size of a Ford 8N - about 20 hp IIRC. I never used it it heavy stuff - that's more brush hog work. It did a wonderful job on my yard. No lack of power. Note - I put a bass boat kill switch on the tractor - spliced into a coil wire (neg I think) - it's been a long time. The switch had a lanyard that I could hook to my belt. I wanted the kill switch in the event I got pulled off the tractor by a tree limb - or something. I was in a desolate area and this was before cell phones. tractors have governors - being dragged off and into the PTO would be a bad ending.

There was 85 acres left of it. Barns full of old goodies and equipment plus a three story log house with a huge hand built fireplace using rocks tilled from the soil. The 2 acre lake was really cool but the humidity and the harsh winters made us walk away. I see you on your farm and wonder sometimes if we made a mistake. The farm is still in her family but after we turned them down one of her cousins bought it just recently. It is located about 20 miles away from Carmi Illinois. That over/underdrive auxiliary unit could very well be a three speed unit. Put it in neutral and try pulling out on the shift lever. If it comes out about an inch it's a three speed. After you pull it out, the lever will move forward (maybe back, I forget) into direct drive, which is where you want it for mowing. The two positions you're using now are underdrive and overdrive.

With these here fords for that scoop at the front, if you lower the rpms you get more control, higher rpms get you more power. So when you're going to line up with something drop the rpms way down and line yourself up, then rev her up to lift and move stuff.

Under the axle by each rear tire should be a pin that you can hook anti sway bars to the 3 point lift arms. Keeps the implement from moving left and right and contacting the tires. I second an over run clutch as well.

We used to cut our lawn with a Craftsman tractor mower and thought I would want a finish mower. I bought a used box blade that came with a free seeder, 3 pt scoop, and finish mower. We used the finish mower, the tractor mower, and a push string trimmer. It took two hours with 3 people. We got a zero turn mower and one person can be done mowing in less than an hour.

We used to bail 100 lb two string hay bales. The Baylor wasn't quite as good as they are today. We would go out in the field and pick up scraps of hay that the Baylor didn't pick up and And also pick up the The bails that broke as they came out. As always I was a little kid so I was giving the job of driving the truck. If you were too young to do hard work you do usually got to drive things. We had a bunch of half ton Chevy fleet trucks. I remember I was so young and small I couldn't sit on the seat and work the steering wheel and work the brake and everything so I just stood up behind the steering wheel. Then we started hauling hay. We had these old hay wagons that would hook on to the draw bar on the tractor. Then the front axle of the trailer would turn. Then you Hook another trailer on the back of the first one with a linchpin. And then the front axle on that also turned. So you had to haywagons with four pivot points and you drive them down the highway without tying them down this was about seven or eight. Then I was about 11 or 12 and they threw me in a two-ton truck we used to haul potatoes or one of the two tons we used to hall grain or sugar beets. The only training I got was there's first second third fourth and 5th, there's your high low it's a 10-speed, don't screw up and break the axle or wreck the truck. I got into one of the trucks one day and turned the key couldn't get anything to happen couldn't get anything to happen. The hired hand came over and said what the hell's a problem. I said this truck won't start. And he said is the key on. I said yeah. Said you see that knob on the floor down there. I said yeah. He said step on it and the engine ordered to life. Floor board start around the 1952 Chevrolet. And this is how it went on and on and on. We were given responsibility that I wouldn't give to kids these days for all the money in the world. But they treated us like men too. We had old chunks of slough Small River running through our ranch. When I was 12 and I got my hunting license my dad handed me an old Sears and roebuck both action shotgun and a saddle scabbard for the motorcycle I just saved up for and a case of 16 gauge. He said have fun hunting. I could take my motorcycle or the truck or my horse anything. But he said if you screw up and do something stupid you lose your privileges. I work you like a man so I'll treat you like a man and tell you give me reason not to. I got my driver's license when I was 14. In Idaho you can get your driver's license then. My birthday was right on the cutoff date to put kids in kindergarten and my mom held me back a year so me and Mark Clark were the only 8th graders with driver's licenses. We had a parking lot at my junior high where we had 8th and 9th grade. Good times I had a carload of girls after school everyday. 73 Plymouth duster painted this horrible green color. It had three on the floor. Fast car. In high school half the guys with pickups would show up with guns in their gun rack in their back window. Most everybody had some kind of deer rifle, a shotgun, and a 22 and for pests like rats, porcupines that would get into our cattle and so forth. Everybody had guns in their truck so that right after school we could all jump in our rigs and go hunting. Nothing bad happened. Nobody ever got shot. Nobody ever got hurt. They work just like men and treated us like men.

I see a lot of these on craigslist for sale. I had one but the lack of maneuverability, mediocre cut and weight of the tractor digging ruts in the lawn encouraged me to get rid of it. Moreover, I have a big zero turn now and it would run circles around this set up. However, this guy's yard is flat and apparently this does his lawn a lot faster than what he had been using.

Great video! I love those old tractors. I've got a Ford 600 that was my only tractor for 16 years on a farm in Kentucky. Worth its weight in gold, I'd say. Moved it back up north to Connecticut with me and she did a fine job bush hogging around the old pastures. I picked up a Case 480CK loader to help the old girl out, and they make a fine pair! I'd love to see more old tractor "how to's" if you get the time. I love the cooler version of you on these videos, as well. Keep up the good work, Dad! I really like all the different content that you share on this channel. Well done!

Dang Bentley tooling around the yard in dad's truck was wholesome as all get out and American as baseball, apple pie and a 68 GT500. Kind of brings a fella back to his old man stopping on a deserted farm road ( now engulfed by suburbia) almost 50 years ago and telling his kid sitting in the shotgun seat to slide on over and give him his first taste behind the wheel of a beat up 64 Ford pick em up.

You need to weld some chain hooks onto the top of the bucket of your tractor. Then. you can use chains to help lift stuff. My dad did this to the bucket of his International. And, it they work great to securely lift stuff. I also love seeing your son drive blue.

I had a “beaver” 3 cylinder diesel tractor with a pull behind finish mower and it worked awesome. A good project for this channel would be to find and rebuild a “Gilson” industrial/commercial 18 hp hydrostatic tractor. It’s just the size of a big riding mower but it’s got a hydraulic pump under the seat. It’s hydrostatic drive. It’s got a pto shaft out the back of it. The one I had was a I believe late 80’s model. It had a rear mount pto drive rototiller with hydraulic lift. It had a 48 inch belt drive mowing deck with hydraulic lift. It had a 48 inch belt drive snow blower with hydraulic lift. And it had a 48 inch push blade with hydraulic lift. It had a 18hp horizontal shaft Briggs n Stratton. It had 75 pound rear wheel weights and tire chains. I have never ever seen another one like it here in Maine. I ended up loosing the motor ( valve guides) and sold the attachments. I kept the tractor and I plan on making a wood splitter with the hydraulic pump. So anyways if you could ever find one in decent shape they are definitely worth looking at. As always WORK SAFE 😎😎🇺🇸🇺🇸

This so reminded me of my childhood. You are truly a blessed man. What a wonderful family you have. These are the memories that stick with a child for life. There is nothing better than doing things as a family. You just don't realize this while it is happening, but they are memories that come back to you as you get older, and you miss them and start wishing that you could have the "old times" back. The kids grow up too fast. They are very lucky to have a father and mother who care so much about them and does everything in their power to bring them up right and makes memories like this. My hat off to you Derek!!

I'm digging the farm tractor and lawn tractor content on this channel. I'd love to eventually snag up a couple small farm tractors but my budget and space constraints limit me to lawn tractors at the moment. I've got an older John Deere 240 that I use to drag stuff around the property and a real old Wheel Horse Raider 12 that I'm working on.

Pro landscaper here, you might already know this but I figured I'd mention it just in case, when using a PTO you always wanna engage your PTO at 50% throttle, and then raise it to your top throttle position, and when you want to disengage the PTO you should do it around 10% throttle, if you start and stop the PTO on your high throttle setting all the time it will wear it out faster or cause parts to break, can't even tell you how many mowers have gone down at my company just from people doing that over and over even after being told LOL. And these are all commercial mower units so them breaking makes me worry more about residential mowers and PTO's.

Oh my Lord, dude. You're killin' me struggling to get that thing out of your truck...and I don't even like a GMC. I have that exact finish mower and it is a wonderful implement. Go ahead and get the carbide tipped replacement blades and enjoy years grass cutting. Yes, they are more expensive. Also, grease the sap out of it until new grease runs out of every orifice. Plan on burning up an entire tube. Drain and replace the gearbox oil with fresh new lube. Drain it when it's cold to avoid any sudden pressure release. Ask me how I know this. Farm King is a top-notch implement.
