Insane. It's INSANE! Never in my life did I think I would ever see body armor that could stop a 50 bmg, let alone a 50 bmg AP from 25 yards. Adept, this plate is all kinds of awesome. Hats off to you.

To be fair this was doable in the 70s. The problem was that that armor was a helicopter plate (not the 'chicken plate') and rather unergonomic. This shaves pounds and some thickness, and it might actually be something a sniper or someone expecting high impact fire would wear during maneuvers.

The SARVIP armor was a system/family of both plates and carriers issued to air crews. As far as i know there have been multiple plate variations that were made but only one was actually issued. The plate that was issued was able to stop Russian 12.7 B32 ammunition. The other plate variants were able to stop 14.5mm ammunition and 15.2mm ammunition. While the SARVIP system as a whole was far too heavy to be practical for anything other than use by vehicle crews, i believe the latter un-issued plates remained un-issued because they were far too heavy to be practical for even air crews.

I wonder if the ceramic thickness is required, they probably did a lot of testing making these. I wonder if if it had multiple tiles if it could have stopped two. The shock from the first shot allowed it to go through, apparently ceramic is the only thing that can stop the round. In the back of my head I am thinking, if you used a cheap RMA 1155 with extra polythene plate, possibly it would stop a M2AP. Having separated tiles is very important I guess. Another idea is what if you used a regular plate with a light weight metal backer that would take the impact punch, maybe a thin titanium or foam metal.

@azeke8
@azeke8 4 месяца назад
Heated treated aluminium (2000, 6000 and 7000 series) is rather brittle and would absorb less energy than 5083 aluminium. Constraining UHMWPE too much would decrease the energy being absorbed by it, in turn possibly leading to penetration. Polycarbonate sheet is sometimes used in “soft armor” inserts to reduce the backface. I think it could be worth a try in this case to use 1/8” (3 mm) polycarbonate sheet followed by foam to reduce the back face.

Might be late to this party, I don't feel like reading 270+ comments. For an attempt to make accurate measurements on the clay briefcase, add some flat bar to the front face of the case that is welded to the frame and stencil on some grid lines. Then make a jig your depth gauge can mount to that uses that front face "picture frame" as a reference surface. For those familiar with woodworking, think of it like a router sled for flattening. From there, load the plate, take measurements of the plate's peak points after securing, log it, let the booger hook and the bang switch do their thing, measure the depth, subtract the plate thickness, and BOOM, reasonably accurate measurements. Or just keep having fun, I was entertained.

@BuffRANGE I've actually been told by a manufacturer and few shops in Europe that NIJ level 4 plates aren't available in certain countries in Europe, as only military and law enforcement are allowed to purchase them. Last year I bought level 4 PGD plates and had them shipped to Poland, myself and a family member both had to complete paperwork (me because I was the one purchasing them and family member because it was her address). Then another export form to get them to Ukraine. The Adept Colossus plates I bought this year it was just the one form for the family members address. Suplementary trauma plates for padding exist for exactly this reason. They disperse the impact over a larger surface area and deform underneath the hard plate in the place of your bones. Think of it like putting one or two pillows in front of your chest to mitigate the effects of an incoming punch. Or gambeson/cloth cushioning used by knights to do the same against maces and warhammers. The basic concept is the same.

@@stahlhelmturtle9822 I agree that titanium has a downside, but I haven't seen any study with 3/8" TI plate. Thick enough steel always excels in preventing backface.
