What is the point in luxury watches at all, when if you happen to live in a growing number of cities across the world you cannot wear them? You cannot wear them for fear of being robbed, held a knifepoint and threatened with your life.
We can chat all day long about the impact of a declining grey market on the future of demand for luxury watches, but the real existential crisis for luxury watch collecting, a problem rendering the hobby almost obsolescent, is watch theft.
This issue can no longer go ignored, because so many are asking themselves what is the point in my £12,000 Rolex Submariner if I can only so much as enjoy it around my own home? Some are doing just that, others are consolidating their collections and sadly a few are giving up the hobby altogether.
But I am an optimist, I like a growing cohort of insurgent enthusiasts proclaim no! I will not caver to going wrist-naked in fear of these criminal Neanderthals, there must be another way….

In Italy stealing watches is an industry. You go to a restaurant and the waiter will get 500 Euro for a phone call to his friends which will wait for you when you come out of the restaurant.

Great video and can’t agree more. I traded my AP15500 for a Lange & Söhne One and also bought a JLC Reverso Dual Face. Both stunning watches that never get a second look, apart from collectors 😁

I live in London and have friends that have been jumped by multiple youths with knives. I wear a Rolex Pepsi every day at work, but travel with an Apple watch. After quite a number of years in the military I can assure you that it is not out of being a coward, but being savvy. Now back to your basement before your mum finds out that you are up late!

Luckily in Geneva or Zurich you can wear your golden Nautilus, Royal Oak or John Mayer casually on the tram without any concerns… even if it screams 150k. Who cares?!

The trouble is in real terms Rolex’s have become literally twice as expensive as they were only a few years ago. The brand also has become bling for chavs and easy to sell for cash. Unfortunately Rolex has become a victim of its own success. I had to sell my Rolex because I became uncomfortable wearing it anywhere because it was so clearly a Rolex from across the street.

Anyone can educate himself on Watch Prices. Thieves also. So I wouldnt say that all Thieves are dumb and dont recognise something worth stealing. Especially when they research their Victims.

Mate I’ve seen various code watches multiple times at the AP house in London and I just can’t get myself to like it. Yes, there are many lovely details, but unless you’re buying a complicated piece, it’s just not as impressive as even a base Lange or Breguet for that matter (even though literally no one buys Breguet but still). Also, for Code money, why would I not rather buy Patek or even get in line to buy an FPJ? Vacheron, JLC, Moser, Lange and Heyne, Mortiz Grossman, Konstantin Chaykin, ALS, omega museum pieces etc are all far more under the radar than Rolex in general. Though if I want an under the radar Rolex, the 1908 is superb! Hoping to see it in person some day.

In Amsterdam there’s been reports of people getting knocked out in the high street, and have their MoonSwatch taken from their wrist. (Swing first, knock ‘em out, rob ‘em blind).

An El Primero chrono is definitely on my shopping list this year and I've seen great offers on some models, Cellinis are on my radar too and I've seen older models offered very cheaply. Even pricing in a Rolex service and new strap would come to less than a new Explorer. Another good video Vinny.

The Cellini, the watch which demonstrate that Rolex was once able to create a nice looking model. The IWC Portugieser is also a real nice looking watch. Although, I would select the model with the white dial and blue hands.

No the Cellini line are all solid caseback only the new 1908 are exhibition, though cellinis are half the price on grey market

Great info vinny ,jlc fits nicely under the cuff or sleeve,I love my watches and nothing feels nicer than putting nice clothes on and finishing off by wearing a beautiful timepiece, just be aware of your surroundings and keep your watch under your cuff ,don't let these scumbags dictate how you live your life.

Interesting angle of view. But switching to less obvious watch brands an models is most probably not the right exit. As thieves learned how to recon Rolex, AP, and so on, they can learn to easily identity a Reverso or any other precious dress watch. So being careful is probably the only way, unless someone owns a gun legally or holds a black belt in martial arts…

Haha yes perhaps but I think another point i didn’t mention is liquidity of some of the pieces discussed in this video. Thieves target Rolex not only because they are easily identifiable but they’re also easy to sell on very quickly. That’s how their business works. A reverso most dodgy dealers they’ll be working with probably wouldn’t be interested in and therefore the watch stays in the possession longer and that’s risk for them, they are most interested in flipping asap, a dressy price from an obscure brand won’t fit their business model
