He's already sustained himself and his family forever if they have even the slightest understanding of investment. But, in the quest for money there is no end point. I don't pretend to judge him because 99.9% of players take the biggest contract and it's extremely rare for a player to take a massive hit to stay with their team. Sure, they sometimes take a hit, but rarely do they take a terrible deal just for the team. I'm sure if any of us were pros we'd take the money too. Just wish it wasn't that way.

If they trade Marner in order to sign Domi and Bertuzzi, they will be competing with Ottawa for a playoff spot. Ugh.

I've already resigned myself to at least 1 more year of this roster with Marner and J.T on it. After that and the leafs inevitably lose in the first round again they will remove Shannahan and Berube and Tree can finally put their fingerprints on this team and see if we can make ourselves a cup contender.

Seriously, Bert lost his head repeatedly, took stupid penalties, and Marchand did just fine. It's like these guys make shit up and then believe that's what happened.

Well they are right in that Bert and Domi were the only one's in Marchand's face, they just lost almost every exchange with Marchand lol

​@@cmac3530 Tbf Marchand did look a lot less like himself that series compared to previous years. I just don't think that's because of Domi and Bertuzzi, he just didn't really have the series we know he's capable of and had some really rough games.

@@plushie946 He didn't look like the same player he's been in the past because he isn't. He's not that 100 point guy anymore. He's like a 60 point guy now. His hips are toast he isn't the water bug he once was that could dance coverages and could make guys miss checks. But he was still super productive in that series. He's still got a really deceptive shot and he's still very responsible defensively and he did take over some periods of that series. He just isn't capable of taking over entire games anymore. That's what age and injury does to a guy.

The only backlash is only from people that do not matter. The fans that an established team only care about are 15 years of age and younger. The ones that will have the money to support the team 20 years from now. They love all these players.

Can they sit him? Sure. It will still count against the cap, but they could do that. It would signal to the rest of the league that Toronto doesn't honor the contracts they sign, and they are willing to drag their players publicly, but yeah they can do it.

I mean you can. But you still have to pay him 100% play him or not. And you can't do an emergency call up or anything similarly to get cap relief. It'd make literally no sense to do that. It'd be hugely handicapping the team for literally no benefit.

You’re blaming the players for being paid a ton of money when the team is willing to offer a ton of money. If your boss came to you and said “hey here’s $10 million based on what we think your potential at this company is,” you wouldn’t take it? The leafs got themselves into this mess by giving out all these ridiculous contracts with no movement clauses. The leafs are just a poorly run company

​@@ItsJared___ Of course I would take the 10 million, and if I didn't perform, I wouldn't have a job the following year. I'm not blaming just the players. I agree, Leaf's management got themselves into this mess by offering ridiculous contracts. However, it shouldn't absolve the players from being held accountable. In any profession that pays huge amounts of money, it comes with high expectations and performance standards. Why should this be any different? Having a performance based contract isn't about underpaying or exploiting the players, they are still getting a base pay. This is about rewarding the players for success which in this case is going deep in the playoffs. This ensure the team and players are both aligned in their goals and players are motivated to perform their best.
