How to make a Vsauce video: Step 1: Write a thesis Step 2: take the opposite of your thesis Step 3: prove the opposite of your thesis in the video Step 4: say "Or is it" and prove your original thesis This is what the result js: Hey, Vsause! I feel that we can never truely run out of songs, sound design is a major distinguishing factor. There are also the fact that playing with speed, volume, lyrical style, instrument combination. Often people forget to take these things into account. Another way to differentiate style is using key changes, or playing slightly out of tune for effect, etc.

Yes, all of those. And every piece of random audio that will propably break your sound playback hardware :) Funny thing on that matter: Mixed Mode CD's en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_Mode_CD were used to combine Videogames with CD quality audio songs. And trying to interpret that first track (wich was binary data) as Audio could create input combinations that could literally break the circuits on your sound hardware or membranes of your speakers. There were just combinations of frequencies not supported by it.

This video is 10 years old, but I hope someone who'll watch it will find this interesting. It is possible to prove mathematically that two notes aren't good together, so yeah, the number of all audio files is fucking huge, but 90% of that will be gibberish, some of that will be random sounds, and only a tiny bit will contain actual notes that make sense. But since the limit when you write music is creativity, and considering the fact that a lot of melodies are pretty similar, it would still be almost impossible to run out of good melodies.

This was a question I used to think about, as nowadays the music industry is mostly surviving on 'remakes', so I used to think whether in near 5-10 yrs new and nice songs won't be made, no one would be to make new songs, just remixes, remakes.

For sure! We'll never get bored, and every 30 years or so most people will forget the overwhelming majority of songs that came before, but I don't think that's what this question is about. The title seems like the kind of question where you’d think “definitely not” but it turns out the answer is yes. But no, definitely not. Especially if you listen to reasonably unique music there’s just so many small details that go into making a track exactly the way it is. Sure there may be songs of similar genre but there’s a practically infinite amount of unique songs left to be made.

Just talking about the limitations of note combinations? YES, SCIENTIFICALLY, IT MIGHT BE FINITE. But think about the melody as a canvas, and harmony is the coloring materials, vice versa. Music can only be finite if you think scientifically, but the possibilities are endless if you really think about it heartfully. Sounds like you only talk about simple melodies. It’s not just about note combinations, what makes music nearly "infinite” is when you add the concept of RHYTHM, DIFFERENT HARMONIC VARIATIONS, TEMPO, etc. A simple note combination can be used as a sample, but it doesn't end there entirely, different people can use the same note combinations but implement a different type of rhythmic patterns in it, and different sets of notes as its harmony, and can sound unique to each other, and still each one of them is a NEW FORM OF MUSIC, that's just talking about simple note combination with different implementations, but now think about complex note combinations, hopefully that's starting to make better sense. Music isn’t just about the melody, it can be something different such as just rhythmic composition, just a harmonic beat with no voicing notes in it and it’s still “MUSIC”, therefore I can say that music would never reach its end point someday. If you only listen to a few genres, this can appear true to your mind, but MUSIC itself has a large variety of genres. And there is a big possibility for new more genres to rise in the near future, which means there is another empty space for creativity waiting to be filled for decades again. I believe that those who says music will ran out, are those people who have very tiny understanding of the music itself. If you’re non-musician, it is easy to imagine that music will easily ran out using sets of scientific reasoning, but if you’re in the field of musician-alike and also writes music, was creative enough and has a huge understanding of the art itself, you can clearly realise intuitively of how infinite the possibilities are. If you have small range of musical knowledge, it is VERY EASY to form reasonings in your mind to convince yourself that it is finite. You shall not be fooled only with the note combinations in the keys, because it’s like saying that a story is already written by someone else before because all the words used in the story were already used by someone else in the past. Music shouldn’t be treated as a finite art just focusing on the combinations of the keys to form a melody, remember - it’s not just about the melody, there is a rhythm, there is a harmony, the stimulation that it provides, the sentimental value that a piece genuinely had. Music isn't just an art, it is more than what any science can explain about it.

Also, this: "The number of possible melodies is virtually infinite. Melodies are sequences of musical notes played one after another, and the possibilities for arranging these notes are vast. The number of potential melodies depends on various factors, including the length of the melody, the range of available notes, the rhythmic patterns used, and the musical style or genre. To give you an idea of the magnitude, let's consider a simple example. Suppose we have a melody consisting of only eight notes, and each note can be chosen from a standard Western chromatic scale (12 possible pitches). In this case, the number of possible melodies would be 12^8, which is approximately 68.7 million. However, this calculation doesn't account for other musical elements such as rhythm, dynamics, articulation, and phrasing, which greatly expand the possibilities. Additionally, if we consider longer melodies or incorporate more complex musical elements, the number of potential melodies becomes astronomically large. It's important to note that not all possible combinations of notes would necessarily be considered musically pleasing or meaningful. Musical composition involves making artistic choices and adhering to certain rules and conventions that help create coherent and aesthetically pleasing melodies. In summary, while the number of possible melodies is technically infinite, the practical limitations of human creativity, musical conventions, and the desired aesthetic qualities of the melody narrow down the choices to a more manageable and meaningful range."

Michael didn't take into account AI software that would be able to combine each of these unique melodies and create songs upward of about 30,000 a day and at that rate the owner of the AI software can copyright over 500 million new songs in a decade and while there still might be more original ones too be made he would basically own the bulk of ALL new MUSIC. Imagine being a musician and trying to come up with something thats not one of the 500 million already copyrighted by the AI software --- so the law will have to change.
