Bishop Robert Barron and William Lane Craig discuss evangelism, faith and science, secularism, and more. Moderated by Professor Stephen Davis and Professor Edward Feser. Venue: The Claremont Center for Reason, Religion, and Public Affairs.
William Lane Craig is Research Professor of Philosophy at Talbot School of Theology and Professor of Philosophy at Houston Baptist University. He and his wife Jan have two grown children. At the age of sixteen as a junior in high school, he first heard the message of the Christian gospel and yielded his life to Christ. Dr. Craig pursued his undergraduate studies at Wheaton College (B.A. 1971) and graduate studies at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (M.A. 1974; M.A. 1975), the University of Birmingham (England) (Ph.D. 1977), and the University of Munich (Germany) (D.Theol. 1984). From 1980-86 he taught Philosophy of Religion at Trinity, during which time he and Jan started their family. In 1987 they moved to Brussels, Belgium, where Dr. Craig pursued research at the University of Louvain until assuming his position at Talbot in 1994. He has authored or edited over thirty books, including The Kalam Cosmological Argument; Assessing the New Testament Evidence for the Historicity of the Resurrection of Jesus; Divine Foreknowledge and Human Freedom; Theism, Atheism and Big Bang Cosmology; and God, Time and Eternity, as well as over a hundred articles in professional journals of philosophy and theology, including The Journal of Philosophy, New Testament Studies, Journal for the Study of the New Testament, American Philosophical Quarterly, Philosophical Studies, Philosophy, and British Journal for Philosophy of Science. In 2016 Dr. Craig was named by The Best Schools as one of the fifty most influential living philosophers.
Bishop Robert Barron is an acclaimed author, speaker, and theologian. He is also the founder of the global media ministry Word on Fire, which reaches millions of people by utilizing the tools of new media to draw people into or back to the Catholic Faith. Francis Cardinal George has described him as “one of the Church's best messengers." Bishop Barron received a Master's Degree in Philosophy from the Catholic University of America in 1982 and a doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris in 1992. He was ordained a priest in 1986 in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and then appointed to the theological faculty of Mundelein Seminary in 1992. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame and at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. He was twice scholar in residence at the Pontifical North American College at the Vatican. He served as the Rector/President of Mundelein Seminary University of St. Mary of the Lake from 2012 until 2015. On July 21, 2015, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Barron to be Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. He was ordained bishop on September 8, 2015.

it's great to see that Protestants and Catholics can be civil to each other! One of the main reasons why people turn their backs on Jesus Christ, because they look at the followers of Christ and say we don't want to be as hateful as those people! Christ's command is to love each other, not viciously mock each other. I once saw a bumper sticker , which said: "Jesus Save Us from Your Followers"! Whether you are Evangelical or Catholic discuss your differences in humility, and remember there is only one Lord and that is Jesus Christ!

This was a respectful but fully honest answer to the Bishop's question. What I would love to see, however, is a discussion between Craig and Scott Hahn, who is a brilliant Biblical scholar and former evangelical. Not a debate, mind you, but a discussion. I figured I would see this in the comments. Craig responds to the question "why aren't you a Catholic" in the nicest possible way and he still gets attacked for it. If I were Craig, I would have added that the biggest threat to Catholicism isn't Protestantism, not by a long shot. The biggest threat is Cultural Marxism.
@thanksforbeingausefulidiot9016
+Drew M - I find it telling that Marxism, whose core principle is that the employees (citizenry) own the means of production and benefit from that production, is threatening to Christianity, whereas Capitalism, which is a system of one or a very few owning and deriving nearly all the benefits of production, with no qualms about exploiting the resources (e.g. environmental, human labor, etc.) needed to derive this wealth, is embraced by modern Christians.
@cl9826
@cl9826 5 лет назад
Cultural marxism was a tactic employed by the CIA during the cold war to divide leftists in their support for the soviet union. There is no such thing as cultural marxism today, and actual marxism is one of the most eye opening tools you could use for viewing the world and understanding why it is the way it is. Two very respectable thinkers without question. Bishop Barron's question was very fair and should be expected. That said, Dr. Craig's response was very fair (albeit restrained) and there should be no problem with that either. The "Mere Christianity" approach is what will be needed at this juncture of history in order to harness the intellectual and spiritual forces of fellow believers to turn the tide of our culture (if that is even possible any longer.) The bottom line is that the entire debate between Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox comes down to the question of "authority" and where it ultimately rests? The Orthodox and Protestant traditions reject the preeminence of Rome and find no support for it in Scripture or in history. Catholics disagree and strive to find it in Peter's priority as an apostle and in the growing authority of Rome in the early centuries of the Church. Regardless, it is Christ and Christ alone that binds us all together as fellow believers on this journey of life.

In God's Word, Mary was of course Blessed and was looked on with Grace by God, but she was NOT sinless (Romans 3:23), Jesus Christ was the ONLY perfect, sinless human being that walked on this Earth (2 Corinthians 5:21). Mary herself also admitted in The Holy Scriptures that she needed God as her Savior (Luke 1:46-47) like everybody else, and if she was sinless or perfect, then she wouldn't need God to save her. and Mary wasn't a virgin *all* her life, only until she gave birth to Jesus and perhaps a little while longer. There's verses in The Holy Bible when Jesus started his ministry that clearly indicate that she and Joseph had more children together afterwards, brothers/half-brothers and sisters/half-sisters to Jesus Christ (Matthew 13:55-56).

Generally love William Lane Craig. But, I find it ironic that he says one of things he appreciates about Catholic Christianity is the ancient history and tradition dating back to the Church fathers, and in the next breath he says he doesn’t believe in things that Catholics believe. Well, unfortunately for him, Protestantism and evangelical Protestantism in particular are the outliers of general Christian belief worldwide and historically speaking. The ancient traditions and Church fathers he appreciates would be VERY Catholic if he were to meet them by some twist of the space-time continuum. They would also label his comments about the Virgin Mary to be heretical. So, I appreciate when Protestants want to discover and learn from the ancients of Church history and theology, however, I’m dumbfounded when they then claim those same ancients to be supportive of Protestant theology. I should know. I used to be one. Regardless, glad to see these two having a dialogue on the same stage.

What I found intriguing is that the Protestant said he didn't believe that Mary is the Immaculate Conception. He didn't say she wasn't only that he didn't believe it, yet although he appears to be knowledgeable he lacks logic. Jesus received His humanity through our Lady which means that if she was not already saved by the Sacrifice of her Son on the Cross before she was even conceived and He's s was born and in fact was born with original sin, then by reasonable deduction Jesus who is God, the second person of the Holy Trinity would have by birth inherited original sin which would be impossible for God because Jesus was like us in every way but sin, therefore it stands to reason that Our Lady's proclamation of being the Immaculate Conception and the understanding of the ancient Apostolic Confessions all understood it, those who choose not to believe it may in fact be committing an unforgivable sin. Just saying.

Hello from Ireland. The Magisterium of the Catholic Church is preserved from error by God, the same Magisterium that canonized the Bible and declared the dogmas of the faith. The dogmas include the Holy Trinity of God, the Hypostatic Union of Christ, and the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is considered heretical to reject any dogma of the Catholic faith.

Craig is a very intelligent man and a good philosopher, but he should stick to what he's good at. He's great at arguing against atheism, but when you get him into the details of theology he doesn't do well. As he often says, he only argues for mere Christianity. But he doesn't make the proper distinctions when it comes to the actual gospel. How are people saved? Someone more theologically oriented would tell this bishop that Catholics and Protestants have different gospels and they cannot both be correct. Getting a few of the details right, like the Trinity, the resurrection, is not good enough. We also need to know how people are saved, what we must believe to be saved, what we must do to be saved. The source of authority is at the heart of every disagreement between Catholic and Protestant. Sola scriptura must be discussed every single time because it will always come to that topic eventually. Either scripture is our authority or Rome is our authority.

@@DJFLDJFL I lack to understand the agenda of an atheist; I get why Christian's share the gospel, our faith and our belief lead us to do so and we are following what we believe to be true and what is expected of us to do. The atheist/agnostic/etc. has no book (such as a bible/law), or instructions to share any news, or even to debunk any news, and typically have beliefs that range from "life is meaningless" to "enjoy the right here right now", etc. I understand having questions and looking for answers which is why people seek the truth but to attack the truth or what we believe to be true is going out of the way for an atheist who has nothing to prove and no hope to share. This behavior is the behavior that happened to Jesus and his followers in the bible. So when you say "Craig helped solidify the lack of substantive argument against atheism", I see it as atheists give unbeknownst support for the gospel and what it tells us would happen in scripture such as: "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first" John 15:18, "See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ" John 10:37 and "They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart." James 2:24. The only options I can conclude are that atheists are seeking for answers without knowing or wanting to admit it (even to themselves), ignorance, or perhaps hate that leads them to write books (God is a delusion), or comment on threads trying to disprove something that really doesn't matter to them in the first place. I tend to believe it's more of the first option than the latter. The uneducated response is to say "I just want to make people know how stupid/silly they sound". I didn't always believe, but when I thoroughly studied (more than just a couple RU-vid opinions) the answers came and louder than ever. The bible was written over a span of 1,500 years, in times of war and peace by over 40 different authors, living at different times, some separated by hundreds of years. In many cases they were complete strangers to one another, and served under different governments, living within contrasting cultures and systems of philosophy. The marvel is that a library so cohesive could have been produced by such a diverse crowd over a period of time. The likelihood of that all being by chance and still existing in the world today is as unlikely as the universe putting itself together. I really do hope all come to see the truth, but unfortunately in the world today it is harder than ever. I also hope that you realize you are supporting what we believe, and verifying the truth of the verses I mentioned above (which are only a few of many on the topic). I didn't plan on using an apologetic approach but in saying that I have a reason to be apologetic, the atheist has no need, yet is.

In Romans it says ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Only God is without sin. Only Jesus being God did not sin after he was born. However, after giving birth to Jesus, Mary sacrificed turtle doves as per the law of Moses for purification - indicating she wasn’t pure. She also prays ‘my soul rejoices in God my SAVIOUR. Something I heard once from a Lutheran Pastor is that the Catholic Church turned away from scripture therefore it is them who split off from Christs church. I myself am currently “stuck in the hallway” as C.S. Lewis put it. Assuming it is possible for the Catholic Church to be wrong on doctrine, (something I’m sure all catholics deny) can you explain to me what seems to be a big contradiction regarding the sinlessness of Mary? Everything I’ve known as a Christian is just so shaken by that very notion. The whole point of the Old Testament and the life of Jesus was to show us that we are helpless without a savior and no one can live up to Gods standard on their own. I mean there are so many Bible verses that indicate this and throughout the whole New Testament I haven’t really seen anything that elevates Mary anywhere near being sinless.

William Lane simply need to make a small equation to realize what is the absolute truth: He acknowledge that Catholic Traditions were also practiced by the Fathers, and that Protestantism doesn't have such beliefs or practices. From there, he should also recall God saying that his Church wouldn't succumb to the Gates of Hell (therefore it won't cease to be, nor err from the truth, at least when it comes to its Magisterium and doctrines; weak individuals appear now and then, but they come to pass... and the Church stays on the right path.) If the Early Church believed in the Bishop (pope), the bishops, presbyters, deacons, confession, infant baptism, real presence in the Eucharist, apostolic succession, etc... it is completely *NECESSARY* that the true Church today have these same, very important beliefs and practices. (and they must mean the same things for today's believers). Following this logic, *there is only ONE church that matches all of these beliefs; the Catholic Church.* *Then, the equation:* True Church = Inspired by the Holy Spirit = She teaches the truth = What the Church says about Mary is the Truth. If you trust God and his message, you will trust his Church. (Do not let heretics "alter" what the Church have always taught.) God Bless

Why Mary was immaculate conceived? What we called original sin ,in reality was Adam and Eve doubting God's love for them and turning away from Him to do things their way instead of God's way (that is all sin really is). The devil deceived them into sinning by insinuating that God wasnt providing for their needs by denying they could partake of ALL of the trees' fruits (and not only of the tree of good and evil , like God had specifically commanded them). So I could see Adam and Eve asking God if He really loved them at all and I could see them even asking God if He loved them enough that He would be willing to die for them? (specially In lieu of what their pumishment was Besides isn't dying the ultimate proof of love? Just ask Romeo and Juliet) Well, that question of would you die for me? is the only question Mary as mothet of Jesus(and mostly every mother) would never ask of her son, who in Mary's case happened to be God Himself.. That is why Mary never had the stain of original sin in her. Besides nothing truly pure like Jesus could of come out of Mary if she wasn't pure herself. Now going back to Adam and Eve question to God of: would you die for us (for all of mankind)? Jesus with His life and death on a cross gave a very rotund and definite YES ANSWER. That is why the very Jewish God and Messiah Jesus had to die madly in love for us on a cross. I hope this comment explains to Protestants as well as Jews why Catholics believe the right things about Mary'immaculate conception and about why Jesus died on a cross : just to show how much God does really loves each one of us, and mankind as a whole. It all goes back to what happened at the very beginning in the garden of Eden. This is all but my own humble opinion though.

Matthew 16:18, Jesus leaves Peter ahead of the church and Jesus also told him " I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven" meaning that only people that follow the only church of God(the Catholic Church) are entering heaven. We can also see that Ephesians 1:23 also says " And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.". Meaning that you're going to find God at the fullest in his church and "church", meaning to only his church(the Catholic Church) and does not state "churches" for example, protestant church, baptism church, the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, etc. The only true church of God is the Catholic Church that Jesus left for us, not "churches"

If the west has the correct view of Original sin(I believe it does)and how it is transmitted then the Immaculate Conception can be logically deduced. This is why we need the living authority of the Catholic Church. In spite of it’s flawed human element. It really comes down to authority,what it looks like and where it resides. If Jesus established an institutional Church and He absolutely did,then that necessitates institutional leadership. I would recommend books or videos by either Dr. Brant Pitre or Dr. John Bergsma on the authority and history of the Catholic Church. Very helpful. Blessings to all.

But after WLC explains why he could not be a Catholic, he asked Bishop Barron a question that I've always pondered upon since I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and started going to a Protestant church in 1996. " What are Catholics doing in this area in training their people ?" Bishop Barron answers; " Not enough". I'm so glad that after my salvation experience in 1996 and my testimony since then after 28 years, I started reading the Bible and started asking questions about how scriptures affect my day to day living. I just want to encourage all Christians, read your Bible and ask questions. John 8:32 " And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. "

You should read more WLC. Your argument is a prime example of the genetic fallacy. This logical fallacy tries to invalidate a claim’s truthfulness by explaining where it came from. This in NO way invalidates the truthfulness of Christianity. You’d have to engage the arguments, instead of claiming that religion or Christianity is false, simply because many children are taught their faith by their parents. For example: “the only reason John is a scientists is because his parents taught him science as a child. It wasn’t a choice on John’s part. Therefore, the scientific method is false.” Sounds ridiculous right?

Craig accepts totally the resurrection of Our Lord. Which is an astounding miracle. So if God preformed the Supreme miracle it's also possible that He could have the immaculate conception of our Lady. Craig is making the classic Protestant mistake of looking for literal evidence. Instead of asking the question WHY. Why did God make Mary such a key part of salvation. It's a big question but an indication is. The very FIRST miracle Jesus worked. The wedding feast at Cana, where Mary almost ignores Jesus words of my "time has not come" and tells the servant to do "what He tells you" which begs the question would the miracle have happened at all except for MARY.
