In this video I compiled vlogs of two very different houses that we toured which featured the work of designer, artist and author William Morris. First, I share our 2022 visit to Kelmscott Manor in West Oxfordshire. It was the summer house and rural retreat of William and Jane and their daughters. Then I share our 2023 visit to Standen House, the West Sussex weekend home of James and Margaret Beale. This home is an Arts & Crafts house that is full of Morris’s work in virtually every room… the wallpaper, rugs, curtains, chairs, bedspreads, and wall drapes. It is a jam-packed example of Morris’ range of work.

Now that piece of history was unknown to me Dara. We have a lot to thank William Morris for in that case. Oh yes, Laura Ashley, who didn't have a (or more) rooms filled with her designs? Amazing poem. The food didn't look to bad either 👌! I'm assuming you may have added a flower identification app on your phone by now Dara. They are so good and helpful in determining plants.More famous people. Love these estates telling the stories which otherwise would be lost. Loved the video Dara. Nice to wake up to though I was awake somewhat early. 🤣! Enjoy the rest of the week. 👌🌺🇳🇱🙋‍♀🇳🇿🦘

What amazing homes. Well you learn something new everyday. We've never heard of these two manor houses. So much research has gone into this, great work. Yay rain!!! This was a fascinating house too. The textiles all around the house are beautiful. Cheers 🍻

I love the William Morris era, when we were having our house decorated years ago. We spent an age going through wallpaper patterns. We chose one picked a sample up compared it to what we had already , it was the same Morris pattern a reprint . Couldn't have it on every wall far too busy we kept the original and then the arts and crafts obsession began.

Two beautiful Manor Houses, Dara and Ian. Wonderfully designed and appointed. I am ashamed to admit I didn't know much about William Morris prior to this video. My first though sprung to tobacco, but on further review I see that was Phillip and it doesn't seem there's any relation. Lovely gardens and tour. Thanks so much for bringing us along.

I'm sorry for such a late arrival, Dara. I don't know if you saw our short, but my mother took a tumble and we've spent the last few days in hospitals and doctors offices. One thing about being late though is that it allowed me to hit the 100th like! Lovely tour.

Hi Dara wow so much research has gone into this, it really shows! Gonna have to show my mum this she would definitely know this artist and is a huge fan of Laura Ashley always has been although she’s upset most of the shops we have locally have closed down! Thank god although she’s in her late 80’s we have kept her tech savvy so can order online 😉 superb own! Fabulous foods! Experiencing England with you is a treat and so different to how we experience it! Absolute pleasure always 💕💕

Now this was really interesting because it is on my (very long!!) list of places that I want to film and visit. I have been to Buscot House, which is nearby, but not Kelmscott. Big connection between William Morris and the Cotswolds - he lived in Broadway Tower for sometime! I am not sure how he divided his time between here and there, or lived in one before the other. Fascinating video packed with interesting nuggets. I love the Arts & Crafts movement so Standen House was fascinating too. Excellent! Thank you both. Take care, Paul

I have been to Buscot a couple years ago... and LOVED it!... but I STILL haven't done that vlog! The great thing about doing a Standen House vlog is that I was able to pull in Kelmscott which was also from a couple years ago and had never been published. I'm so hopelessly behind! I remember doing my video about Broadway tower and learning he had been there. So fun! I still want to visit the Arts & Crafts Museum at Chipping Campden. When I was last in CC I ended up having a long chat with a chap I met near the Market Hall... he is 90+ and one of the founders of the museum! Thanks for watching! XX Dara

Another fascinating vignette about someone I knew nothing about. Nice to be able to design and make your own house decorations. The only wallpaper I have ever attempted to decorate is on my PC. And now it is just a black screen. 😂 I hope one day my sketch books are put on display in my studio. If I had a studio.

Both were lovely homes. I first came across William Morris' designs when visiting an historic home in Australia. It seems wealthy pastoralists recreated their little bit of England in the southern hemisphere. That included furnishings, even if the owners of the house would have to wait nearly a year for their items to arrive. From what I understand it was mainly wallpaper that made it to Australia, you would hope that your decorated measured correctly, you wouldn't want to be a roll short!

Hi Dara Another fascinating and historic topic. You look lovely with that umbrella 4:48 I see you enjoy visiting the garden discovering many magenta colors of the flowers. Nice to see you had a British style tea time there... I would love to stay such a charming room with handcrafted bedding and curtains or wallpapers. Textile is one of kind. They seems watching old movies in my dream... But no offence, it may be a little too much for me to live in. hehe. Hmm....When I studied a little about fashion, I was told that I don't have to dress up with Chanel or Armani from head to toe...Just one...Could be a jacket...could be a pair of shoes or a purse...so it shines.. So sorry to say that I 'd rather everything simplified. I hope I did not hurt your feeling by... I thank You again for educating me. It was fabulous walking tour in spite of the rain.

I feel exactly the same way! I think one of the William Morris designs in a room might be very nice. But when they put different designs on the wallpaper, curtains, rug, and furniture all in the same room... it's overwhelming! As for the umbrella, you really need to get one of those inside out umbrellas! There are lots of different colors. Not just magenta 🤣. They are very clever. They never get broken in a windstorm, and because they open inside out all the water drains easily when you are drying it out. And it even stands up on its own! I put a link in the description if you want to look at it on Amazon. Thanks for watching, Bestie! 💖

I haven't checked it out for a good 20 years but it is a lovely house, with very interesting tiles. I had an encounter with a large stray cat outside of it hehehe. Being located in Bexleyheath, it can be a bit on the rough side getting there, as the area has gone down hill of late, yob-wise, but a lovely Summer afternoon visit should be very nice indeed. @@MagentaOtterTravels

Spotted the famous William Blake poem at 4:13 on the child's bed quilt. I'm not a big fan of the arts and crafts movement. I'm more of a Streamline Moderne chap. I hope they checked that green wallpaper for arsenic. He used arsenic in the dye to get the vivid green colours. It has been found in his Trellis wallpaper. He was told about the dangers but ignored them. "As to the arsenic scare, a greater folly is hardly possible to imagine: the doctors were being bitten by witch fever.''

I can admire individual elements of Morris's designs, but too much of it is just overpoweringly fussy to modern eyes. All credit to him, however, for coining the maxim "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful". If we all followed that principle the queue at the local tip would be a mile long!
@MagentaOtterTravels
@MagentaOtterTravels 3 месяца назад
Yes, I agree. It was interesting to see Standen house because there were so many different Morris patterns to look at, but I did not love seeing so many of them in one room at one time. I certainly would not want to live in a house decorated that way!
