Williams-BMW F1 vs V8 Supercar vs BMW 318i - F1 Speed Comparison

This was recorded during the 2001 Australian Grand Prix weekend. The 3 cars are a 2000 model Williams-BMW f1 car (in 2001 livery) driven by Marc Gene, a Castrol Perkins Commodore V8 Supercar driven by Larry Perkins and a BMW 318i road car driven by Allan Moffat.
The F1 car weighs at minimum 600kg (with driver) and has about 760hp from a 3 litre v10, while the V8 Supercar weighs at minimum 1355kg (without driver) has about 550-600hp from a 5 litre v8.

lived in Melbourne for two years and was at this race. Walking distance from Port Melbourne, used to drive my kids to school on these roads until they closed for the race. Noise of the V10 was epic.

@psaile93 marc gene, the guy who tested for williams, and also raced for them 3 times when ralf schumacher was injured, and also was a test driver for ferrari for 5 or 6 season. and he won the le mans 24 hours in 2009 :)

@geargei80 yes, infact they did 2 rounds the day before, and the bmw road car won one of the races, then the v8 supercar won one. they usually try to make these events so they finish as close as possible at the finish line. apparently there was a final race the next day, but i didnt get to see that one.

It's not meant to show BMW road cars as being slow, it's meant to show what a "average, but not slow" road car is like compared to F1.

yeah, marc is actually a rather good driver, he's no alonso or hamilton, but he definitely doesn't suck.

You don't gain most time through speed, it's acceleration and corner speed. Most F1 cars only get up to ~215-220mph or so on the fastest tracks with least downforce with ~800bhp (currently)..

That is a Williams F1 car with a BMW engine. BMW didn't have their own team until 2006.

BMW 318i is only getting 165kph? That's only 100mph... I have a Chevy Silverado and my truck can go faster than that! Maybe I should take a lap or two around this Aussie GP track
