@smashfoley, I was lucky enough to meet him in the fall of 1999 at a concert at Pine Knob Amphitheatre in Michigan. My cousin down in Texas used to be good friends with Willie's late stage manager Poodie Locke. He flew up here with his girlfriend. He told me NOT to waste money buying tickets and that he would get us in backstage. I thought he was full of shit. He wasn't. We were the LAST vehicle to leave the parking lot that night. After Willie dealt with all of the VIP guests, signing autographs and posing for pictures, we were called over by Adam's friend Poodie Locke - he's since passed away from he was Willie's longtime stage manager. Willie came out of the bus and we talked for about 10-15 minutes about golf - his buddy J.L. Lewis had just won an event on the PGA tour within the couple of weeks before that concert. Then, told Willie that the first concert I ever went to was down in Houston - a New Year's Eve show where the Rockets used to play basketball and Earl Campbell from the Houston Oilers got up on stage and sang Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys and the place went crazy. Willie then invited me, my wife, my cousin Adam and his girlfriend and my old buddy Joe from Port Huron on his bus Honeysuckle Rose. I immediately recognized the oh so sweet smell and saw that he had long vines of weed wrapped around his pictures hanging on the wall letting them dry. Then, that's when you could say that we "broke bread" with him LOL! We all inhaled a lot. To this day, I regret not taking Willie up on his offer. Our vehicle could follow the bus down to Cleveland for his next show and that a few of us could ride on the bus with him. I stupidly declined. Told him that I had to work the next morning. One last thing, BEFORE the concert - around 5pm - me and my cousin Adam drove to Pine Knob. We found a security guard with a walkie talkie. Adam told the guard to tell the band that Adam Mize was there. Guy comes on the radio and asks where he's from. Adam says Ft Worth and Surfside Beach, Texas. In a minute or two I hear all this yelling and Poodie comes flying up on a golf cart. We go backstage and they're all sitting down having dinner. I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I got to meet Willie's late sister Bobby Nelson the piano player and his electric guitar player - the late Jody Payne. I looked at Adam and said why didn't you tell me this? He said, I told you not to buy tickets dumbass! LOL! And that's the whole story pretty much.
