Bob Dylan one of the greatest story telling song writers, doing a duet with Willie on one of the greatest story songs ever written, by Townes Van Zandt. That is powerful.
How can you go wrong with these two performing together? Both living legends and may they stay with us as singing and playing as long as God will allow!
I met Townes Van Zandt in 1970 when I was in college and he invited a friend and I to play a short opening set for him. Ever since I have been "promoting" him as one of the all-time great songwriter/poets. If nothing else does, seeing Bob Dylan doing one of his songs confirms that.
Two American legends who will never be forgotten. Willie now 88 and Dylan just celebrated his 80th. Time sure does fly. It will be a day of mourning when we lose either of these men.
True sentiments, they are both American treasures whose voices are more important than ever in our tumultuous times regardless of their age. These men have a conscience, and have always spoke to our consciences during troubled times. As we continue to face Covid, mass shootings, Putin's assault on poor Ukraine, we need our great poets & rock stars to come forward like they did in the 1960's. We need their message songs to educate & inspire us, to raise our consciousness and call us to action. Crosby, Stills & Nash, Neil Young, and Bono of U2 fit this category well too. I love Dylan and Nelson, and their moving version of this great song Poncho & Lefty. They may be old now, but they're not going anywhere just yet, they are national treasures! I hope they stay around long enough to teach & inspire the next great batch of songwriters and musicians to follow in their footsteps and carry on the tradition. Thank God for these two legends!
Sadly, Townes never got to hear this, dying on Jan 1, 1997. He certainly got to hear Willie and Merle sing it though, though I'm sure him hearing Bob sing it would have been special to him.
@@brazzesr this concert was Willie’s 60th birthday party, which would have been in 1993, so Townes would have at least known about the performance (if he didn’t witness it himself, which he might have).
@@hernanpizarro9253 "The best"? I think her version is definitely very good but so is Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard's and then there's Townes Van Zandt's version. He wrote the song. They are all good versions but "the best" is too subjective a term for something like this. In my opinion
No matter how great you may think these two titans of music are, you are underestimating them. Two of the greatest of the great songwriters of all time. We're truly fortunate to have them still among us.
Robin Lee B.-- Can I say you're comment is truly 2 the point and best I've seen so far 👌? And may I dare say, what we're seeing here is Hallowed ground?🤔💯 these too talents are " Generational ", we're witnessing history in the making. I can get more grandiose, but l'll stop here, ' nuff said 😅
The night they taped this I was across town at the Paramount with Nanci Griffith, Odetta, Pete Seeger, John Prine, Alison Krause & many others. Earlier in the day I saw Bob in an old Buick with Buddy Guy behind the wheel at the drive thru at Sandy's on Barton Springs Rd. I love my town. :-)
RIP to these musicians who have departed: Odetta, Pete and John. "On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Nanci Griffith among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.[7]" - Wikipedia
Both great songwriters. One has limitations as a singer though. Listen to Dylan's version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. He uses a lot of less commonly used verses that are very effective. "There's a ray of light in every word. It doesn't matter what you heard , the broken or the holy Hallelujah." He's a poet, and was able to pick out a lot of the most poetic verses.
These two greats singing this great song by Townes is magnificent. Both their voices are SO beautiful here. The words so beautifully crafted and sung. Great emotional performance ❤❤❤
Have loved Bob Dyland and his music as far back as I can remember... back to 1976 when I fisrt started listen to music as a young teenager. he has and always will be my favorite of all time! His music never gets old!
Two of the world's greatest talents playing homage to another lyrical genius. TVZ has been, and will be forever missed! Now if somehow we can get Willie and Bobby to live forever!
Willie Nelson... a living national treasure and authentic legend. It doesn't get any more REAL than Willie. In addition to his musicianship, he is one of greatest song writers ever - of course Bob is right up there with him in that department. I guess Nobel Prize for Literature says it all. So great to see these two guys on stage together.
That Mr Nelson has an incredibly delicate vocal tone, voicing and expression, doing the Lyrics perfect justice. That Mr Dylan sure can play Guitar. And that Mr van Zandt sure is one of the greatest Poets of our centruy. Period.
Two of our greatest songwriters singing a classic by a songwriter’s songwriter. If Dylan deserved the Nobel (and I think he did) then Townes was just as deserving-both have lyrics that rival the best literature along with some of the most haunting melodies every written
dbob , I'm in agreement with you ..both wrote songs that'd make u think or cry or get madder'n hell about unjust actions..Townes though is probably my favorite just because some of his songs hit really close to home for me.
@Willie Nelson 🔵 Thanks Willie for you comments..I am also a singer and due to Covid..miss my opportunities to sing in places..being in N.Y. where mandates are quite severe..What inspires me is that it's never too late..I am 60..and you are "61" and still sound wonderful!..
"And now he's growin' old." So sad that Townes Van Zandt didn't give himself a chance to grow old. Was born 1944, died 1997 age 52, same age that Dylan is at this concert. Dylan now 77, Willie 85. It's been wonderful following these two as they grow old. I hope they both have many years ahead of them
Townes did not have an easy life. Bi-polar, he suffered insulin shock therapy in a misguided attempt to treat him. It destroyed his short term memory. He was severely alcoholic and when in the depressive phase of his bi-polar illness he took heroin, to which he inevitably became addicted. For most of the 1970s he lived in a shack outside Houston Texas, with no running water or electricity. It is hardly surprising he died young. Some say he was the greatest singer songwriter ever, and I agree.
An amazing performance of an amazing song performed by two amazing troubadours, the likes of whom we will never see again xxx keep on keeping on Bob & Willie xxx
Absolutely remember! But it's a good cover by two of my favorite musicians of one of my favorite songwriter's best tunes, and a tribute to Townes for sure. Dylan knew what Townes had, and requested a private session with him, which he ultimately got.
Great song and a beautifully restrained performance vocally and musically. I like the way Bob glances over to Willie to synchronise ‘I suppose’ at at the end of each chorus. These two don’t always duet well but I think it all comes together here. Thanks for posting it, sorry it took me so long to find.
This is outstanding!! When you add the musical genius (Townes Van Zandt) who wrote it, this performance gives me goosebumps!! To the 18 people who did not like it, I feel sorry for your inability to appreciate great music in a concert performance!
Lol I imagine there are hordes of people out there who fill in the time between auto erotic sessions with themselves by deliberately NOT liking things. Perhaps it's some sort of Foundation Course for Trolls.
one of best memory's I have is of Willy calling my grad father on his birthday I had a aunt that was part of the retinue for his tour took Willy ten min to convince my gran it was him
Two of music's greatest living legends standing shoulder to shoulder, and yes, they're still very much alive in 2020. Love that super gravelly voice that Bob Dylan delivers in this clip. This guy inspired Jimi Hendrix, and yet is still playing music till this day.
Townes van Zandt brings two unlikely legends together out of respect for him. This was a great performance by both Nelson and Dylan. Dylan had experience with dueling on country music with Johnny Cash when he was younger. He respects all music genre when it comes straight from the heart. Bob Dylan has to be the coolest man ever born.
Such a tone would not be so described that way for any other singer. He has never had "good" tone or intonation, nor can he enunciate. Other than Mrs. MIller, the worst professional singer in show business.
@Willie Nelson 🔵 Thank you for the reply sir! I have been listening and admiring your songwriting and your performances for most of my sixty four years. “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” was among one of the first songs that I admired and was inspired much by….at around the age of seventeen I was learning to accompany my own vocals and that great song was one of the first I was inspired to learn. I would many years later accompany my daughter as she was learning to sing, and “Crazy” was among the favorites chosen. I had the good fortune to see Mr. Bob Dylan live many years ago back in the mid seventies. Unfortunately I have yet to be that fortunate regarding any in person live performances of yours; I’m still holding out hope though so please don’t ever retire…your music just keeps getting better! I’ve always been a fan, always will be a fan! I hope that you know that to many of us fans You Sir Are A National Treasure.
LOVE how Bob does his OWN thing. :) He's like "Hmmmmmm, a duet with my good bud Willie! In his HONOR! In Texas, at that! Hm, what should I wear? I know! Let's go with late-80s New York City club-wear!" OMG I LOVE IT!
