I sorely miss my Aunt Jan from Tampa Town Florida, this was her very favorite Christmas Song. Thanks for sharing Willie with the rest of us. Hoo Raa!!!!
This was my oldest daughter's favorite Christmas song she was killed in a tragic car accident in 1999 and I remember her last Christmas she found this record somewhere and she was so excited she couldn't wait to get to my house and play at Mama listen what I found I can't remember I can't be I'm just so excited that I found it it was always Christmas time for her to hear Willie Nelson sing the song
I love this song by Sir Willie Nelson. Always a hero for country music fans worldwide. He makes me happy year-round. You don't need Christmas to feel happy. Thanks Willie Nelson.
This song was written about my Grandfather Herman Douglas. He was the Man sitting in his wheelchair on the street corner in Texas peddling his paper and ribbons!! Thank you, Willie! And Thank you Grandpa!!
Teresa, it was about Frank Brierton and he never used a wheelchair. I remember him very well back in the late 50's but I also remember seeing your grandfather Mr. Douglas selling his pencils very vividly right out in front of Leonard's Dept Store. There was another article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram today about them both.
Teresa Vittoria Yea! to youTeresa! Friggin Awesome. Such an iconic historical moment to be involved with. How many of us have, sadly, looked the other way at times like your Grandad. Thumbs up and Merry Christmas!
My mother made Christmas so beautiful the way she wrapped the presents so beautifully and even as a small child I didn't want to rip the paper. The ribbon was beautifully curled and the paper was so festive and now she just recently fell and got a brain injury. She's 70 and she can't wrap very good anymore. I remember asking her why Santa's presents were as beautiful as her's? She said I am wrapping presents for Santa his elves are overworked. So, I offered to help Santa to help. He hired me he likes mommy's wrapping too. I look back and I CANNOT help put feel sad now. My mom and brother are all that is left. My wife was transferred to another state, for her work and I am here with my mom. I am so sad I miss my wife, and I miss my mom like she's died because she's slipping away and all I can do is watch. I am very thankful for the mother and Maternal Grandmother. I don't have kids. I have step children. But I am not good enough for them. So, I am very very sad. Merry Christmas, mom. This song will be my Christmas song in her memory.
Willie wrote a beautiful song here. This is my first Christmas in 25 years without my Angel Bear. Shannon Marie Burns has left to be with God's angels. Her wings were waiting, no doubt about that. I have so many beautiful memories about us together, holding hands and sharing the beautiful and God given time together. I miss you Shannon Marie, and will love you for eternity. Your Denny. God Bless and keep you.
Rick, thank you Rick. I cry 25 hours a day. I miss her so much I can not even describe in adjectives the pain of missing her. God Bless you. My Name is Dennis Gritton. I bought her a Bear monument as that was her nickname, my Bear. God it hurts!
Shannon Burns. My brother, I too lost my beautiful Linda. We had 40 Christmases and then she passed on Christmas Eve 3 yrs ago tomorrow. I still hurt and I cry everyday still. I know we will be together again. I will love her forever and a day. God bless you brother. Merry Christmas. Know that you are loved.

Written by Willie Nelson, the song tells the story of a street vendor who, during the holiday season, sells pencils and paper on the streets. In October 1963, while walking on his farm in Ridgetop, Tennessee, Nelson was inspired to write the song after he remembered a man he often saw while he lived in Fort Worth, Texas. The man had his legs amputate and movd with rollers, selling paper and pencils in front of Leonard's Department Store. To attract the attention of the people, the man announced, "Pretty paper! Pretty Paper!"In 1964 Willie Nelson recorded his version, produced by Chet Atkins at RCA Studio B in Nashville. The musicians for the session were Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano), Pete Drake (pedal steel), Henry Strzelecki (bass), Kenneth Buttrey (drums), Jerry Reed (guitar), and Velma Williams Smith (rhythm guitar). Nelson recorded the B-side "What a Merry Christmas This Could Be" on the same session.Wikipedia
I remember that man...I was a little kid and we would shop every Christmas at Leonard's Dept store. He would be out there selling all the things mentioned in Willie's song. Brings back memories!~
First Christmas with my now late former wife: I got a few presents, wrapped them separately, and put them in a big box....with two bricks for weight...and wrapped the big box. She didn't know what to think....it was that Christmas she said she would marry me.....very Merry Christmas!!
You can add one more scrooge if you count a friend of mine who doesn't even have RU-vid and has never even heard this song before. I'm going to tell her that this is based on the story of a real person then maybe she will have changed her mind on what she said.
One of my favorite Xmas songs. The others being "Blue Christmas/Santa Claus is Bsck in Town"by Elvis,"Please Come Home For Christmas" by The Eagles and"Everybody's Waiting On The Man With The Bag"and "It's a Marshmallow World" by Seth MscFarlane.
I guess my love of the song goes back to '71....working at a small town country station I came upon this record....and Jim Reeves Christmas songs....loving them ever since....best I recall it was on a green label RCA promotional 45.
Nice post, sanny claus. I haven't heard this version by Willie, only the other one without backup singers. Do you know if this was a "Nashville" release? It's got that sound. Thanks.
