Keeping with The Spoon Theory, I agree, it might not always be about will power, but more about energy. As someone dealing with mental health and physical health problems, it often comes down to energy. I only have so much each day and it's limited, so I have to be very careful as I decide how to spend it. If there is a chore that absolutely must get done, like laundry or something physically taxing, well that might mean that my half hour walk isn't going to happen that day as I only have so much to give. Saying it's a matter of will power makes it sound like not being able to do everything under the sun is a character flaw. Thinking in terms of energy... well, everyone only has so much, there's no fault there.
If doctors described the diet program as an Rx, it would resonate more. For me, I was always irked when people repeated that the Pre-Op diet was not meant for weight loss. Although true, it gave people permission to not stick to the diet. Some people also only required a couple weeks of pre-op and others took that as the universal recommendation for everyone.
I mean, ultimately it's up to each individual on whether or not they do what they're supposed to, I have no business trying to force people to do things lol. But I agree, I've always wished the conversation would look more like a prescription and discussion on what is really necessary for our health and not a shrugged off recommendation of ideas.
I really like the perspective of the pre-op diet as a prescription. I'm literally sitting here waiting for my endoscopy to further my process here in the states. The pre-op diet is super close in my future so this is some great perspective for me. Also, OMG I can't even imagine skipping stages post op, like you said, the guidelines are there for a freaking reason. It's so dangerous!
Very thoughtful insights into the reasons for pre- and post-operation food restrictions Eye opening segment on the person who ate an apple and ended up in the hospital. I absolutely agree to follow all your Doctors orders.
Oh man, right? I know so many people who hesitate to add food because they're nervous. I couldn't even imagine eating something solid that first couple weeks.
