Welcome to my channel! My name is Stephanie and this channel is all about my life after my Gastric Bypass surgery. I try to cover everything about my experience to include my personal struggles and triumphs, well-researched videos on topics relevant to bariatric surgery, and general commentary on the bariatric community, weight loss surgery, and breaking free of the diet culture mentality.

I had surgery at Mexico Bariatric Center in Tijuana Mexico with Dr. Rodriguez Lopez on December 1, 2020. My stats are as follows:
Height: 5'4
Starting BMI: 65
Highest Weight: 383.3 lbs.
Starting Weight (pre-op): 374 lbs.
Surgery Weight: 344 lbs.

I have currently lost 175 lbs. and although my weight loss has slowed down significantly, my journey still continues and I learn something new every day. I'm living my best life, healthier and more active than I've ever been, and I'm just getting started.

Ugh. I've always had to walk to the OR. Would it kill them to knock me out a little first? They always tell me that the mask is just O2 but i don't believe them. Because it's always the last thing i remember.

I like how everyone wants to get surgery rather than working on losing weight. Everyone that gets the surgery done anyhow dies

That team of aftercare you are talking about in the US is FOREIGN to many. And as a woman of color I wonder if that's why. At 48 years old I have never had the level of aftercare that you speak of here in the US and I was born and raised here. Most of my aftercare has been on me following up. I mean my PCP takes good care of me but she is a woman of color also. I have not seen the level of care you speak of with non-people of color... But I'm glad you've had such great experiences with them.

I’m glad you mentioned you are not a doctor-because much of this is just plain misinformation. 1. Carbonation-wrong. In one breath you talk about how it won’t stretch your stomach. In the next, you talk about “skin being like a balloon”. Carbonation will make you nauseous, yes-but there’s a reason there is a gastric sleeve procedure. It REDUCES the size of the stomach-that in obese individuals is larger than most. Why would you want to take the chance to go back to that? I have a friend who had gastric sleeve-and she eventually went back to her normal eating habits-to include diet soda. She can now eat large amounts of food-again-and gained all the weight back. 2. Straws-introduce gas into the stomach-displacing room for good nourishing food. Period. 3. Gas pains-surgeons don’t fill your body cavity with “air”. It’s CO2-carbon dioxide. I’m not a doctor either. But I would suggest to people who have had surgery or are contemplating it to LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTORS. This woman is doing exactly what she says she’s trying to debunk: “social media claims”.

Do they cover the psychological side of the surgery? My daughter actually said she was in mourning for the loss of her relationship with her comfort foods. They also neglected to explain that her body would reject certain foods that she shouldnt have had problems with. Long story short, food became her enemy and she became anorexic. These weight loss clinics overlook the psychological side of weight loss and only concern themselves with the end results.

My question is, does your stomach rebel if you eat the wrong thing? If you'd eaten the Reese biscuits or bread, would you have got dumping syndrome? A long as you're not gaining, isn't that the purpose. I know the head hunger is a real challenge but I was hoping the stomach would deal with it, if one gave in. I'm doing an extreme keto to shrink my liver for my bypass next week. I'm 70 so hopefully this will see me fall naturally into the old person non hunger, content with a sandwich or soup mentality that most end up with when heading into their 80's. I've struggled with every diet including the lapband and always regained more than I've lost. What a vicious cycle we live. I asked my skinny surgeon if he'd ever had hunger and or thinking of food all day long, and he said he'd experienced it once about a decade ago. Sigh!

Do you realize how much the Xarelto costs in the USA? $137 for all those meds including the Xarelto is a deal. My co-pay for Xarelto for a month is almost that much. Thanks for the details on the surgery.

This is a very helpful video! I appreciate it so much. I wasn't sure if I was having dumping or not. I had a revision in April 2024 from lap band to gastric bypass. I was used to the sniffles and plugged nose feeling when I overate but I was able to stop and let the food pass through the band and feel better. After reading the comment about reactive hypoglycemia makes me wonder if I have that. I usually feel light headed when it happens but not always.

I am scheduled for surgery in August. I have been watching lots and LOTS of videos and this one has made a huge impression on me. You’ve really addressed an issue that hurts so many people and isn’t discussed. Surgery doesn’t fix your internal fat phobia and the disordered eating that results. It’s important to still reject diet culture after surgery!! Thank you!!

I am 3 weeks post op and not sure if it's dietary issues or dumping that are causing my chronic bowel issues. I have been experiencing noisy stomach from day one, even from ingestion of just water. I have been in and out of my local ER for the last week with constant diarrhea. I am going on day 17, with going 6 to 20 times per day. Even the ER doctors are at a loss! Within 15 to 30 minutes of eating something, it goes right through me. I have eliminated dairy completely from my diet, and it still continues. Anyone else have this problem? What helps? Or helped?

Dumping is the best thing ever... it keeps you real... My heart races and tbh the only negative is that I am a teacher and it makes things really difficult that normal people think I am making up... Being a teacher is the biggest thing that sucks... not being reminded not to eat that shit... I am 14 years out...

You probably already have your clothing dilema solved, but you might try Cato's if you have one there. The only issue with them is that they combine sizes, like 14/16 or 26/28, which doesn't usually work for me, but might be perfect for you and you can't beat their prices! Depending on your size you might also try Lane Bryant and Torrid. They're expensive in my book, but Lane Bryant has some decent sales. Torrid is for a younger crowd and leans heavily into black clothing, and is on the expensive side, but they're the primo store in my area for younger plus, or near plus sizes. Still, my daughter in her 30's has found some pieces for work there.

I definitely love the blue shirt with the zipper, the angled tricolor you can wear with leggings, the gray shirt with the seam down the front (I thought the style was very flattering) - maybe you would like it better in a different color. The mauve tighter shirt, and snow white sleeve are definite returns. I like the beige one for wearing to work AND could also look good with jeans. Love the sleeve details. The blue shirt is definitely my fave for work, but you do have to be very careful with laundering, as the zipper will be prone to warping in the dryer and possibly washing at warm temps. Keep up the search! You're doing great.

Those internal dialogs of "everyone is judging me and laughing at me" ... we don't just get those thoughts from nowhere. I remember people (including doctors) saying the MEANEST things about my fat grandma and my fat mother. Both to their faces and behind their backs. I was a kid in the 80's when fat jokes were everywhere. All over TV, movies, magazines, at school... just everywhere. Even people who weren't fat would get fat shamed. Fat shaming was MERCILESS. My mom grew up with a lot of fat shaming in the 60's and 70's, too. And my poor grandma. When you grow up with that, it really forms your core memories and gets deep down into your soul. The butt sweat thing could happen to anyone in the summertime. But if it's happening in the wintertime too then yeah, that might be a problem.

And also when it comes to weight loss is three factors nutrition, sleep and exercise. Thank you so much for your input on this topic.

I am 2 weeks post-op today, and I only discovered that I was allergic to soy after surgery when they had me switch from dairy due to reflux. I always naturally avoided soy products for some reason, and now I understand why. As for aversions... I can't seem to stand any brand of protein powder at all. They all have a funky smell and smell. I have always had a heightened sense of smell, but following surgery, it has been magnified. I cannot tolerate anything cream based, so my diet for the first two weeks has consisted of only, Jell-O, broth, water, and tea. I was excited to be able to start on cream of wheat today.

I don't know My scale I love my scale it's my best friend I weigh myself two times per day I weigh myself at night time at the end of the day right before bed and then in the morning and then I do that everyday every single day and I love it and I love knowing where I'm at everyday and it keeps me on track so it would be a total failure for me to not even weigh myself for a few days because that means I'm failed
