Also take into account modern shoes, physical therapy, sports medicine, technology, luxury travel, Changes of rules that make it easier to score and less physicality. The only thing they could do would be hack a wilt, but he'd probably still dunk the ball anyways. The faster paced game would only benefit wilt because he loved to run considering he was practically an Olympic track athlete. Guys like clint capella or birdman or tyson Chandler never play a whole game. Wilt avg practically an entire 48 mins a game. Absolutely insane.

Keep in mind he and others of his era are restricted to a palms-down dribble so they "can't" do things today's players do due to rules it's not just a skill thing. It actually takes a great level of skill to dribble palms down without turning it over because you can't protect it or change direction as easily as today's players can. In addition, no players can barrel inside (be it from the post or face-up) due to offensive foul rules being a lot more strict in 1970. No 3 point line so no wide floor spacing of course.

Have you never seen a crossover or change of direction in slow motion today of any kind? Don't even need to see it in slow motion really - actually just dribbling up court in a straight line at a slow jog most players even considered good ball handlers today touch the bottom side of the ball. - A lot of scooping is done in keeping the ball protected and moving where players want it to go today. Nobody cares, or thinks twice about it anymore even though it is against the rules. I predict one day the rule on this will change or be adjusted accordingly (unannounced, and nobody will notice) because it isn't enforced anyways.

People tend to forget that Wilt was coming back from a devastating knee injury, a torn patellar tendon, that caused him to miss almost all of the regular season. He only played in three games before the playoffs started and in one of them scored 2 points. He wasn't moving too well and if you watch him here he looks like he's hobbling compared to the smooth, fluid Wilt of former years. People talk about Willis Reed coming back from his injury but Wilt deserves credit for coming back to play from a far more severe injury than Willis' ankle sprain. Still, the injury did hinder his effectiveness, even though he was the Lakers most consistent and best player in the Finals. And Wilt did destroy him. Willis scored four points on 2-5 shooting and had three rebounds. Wilt had 21 points on 63% shooting and 24 rebounds. He dominated the matchup. It wasn't Wilt's fault that the Lakers backcourt got shredded by Walt Frazier and Dick Barnett, that they turned the ball over multiple times, or that the forwards couldn't keep Dave Debusschere off the boards. Russell was not going to score more points than Wilt did in this game, no matter how ferociously he might have played. He wouldn't have gotten more rebounds either. He might have hit a few more free throws but then again he was never really any better a foul shooter than Wilt was.
@jaranarm
@jaranarm 6 лет назад
Wilt scored 22 points in that Game 7 in 1962. He had just spent an entire season averaging 50-25 just so his team could compete. He faced Syracuse in the first round, a series that went to a deciding game (where Wilt put up 56-35). After that he had to immediately face a 60 win Boston squad after only ONE day of rest. The Celtics by comparison had TEN straight days of rest. Despite everyone saying they'd get swept Wilt still pushed the Warriors to a Game 7 two point loss. All it went down to was in the final minute where the refs hit Wilt with a controversial goal tend and then a shot clock problem which gave Philly less time on their final possession. Bottom line is that Wilt had pretty much zero rest all year yet still took Philly to the edge like no player could. In the 1962 playoffs Wilt's teammates shot a miserable .354 from the field combined and they were the worst defensive team that year.
@20fadhilRevolution
@20fadhilRevolution 6 лет назад
Meschery was the first scorer in that G7 1962, and the 2B scorer since the playoff began. Wilt was there for other stuffs like defense and moving the ball. There was a reason for why Warriors went from conceded the most PPG from opponent to the least in Playoffs. Also, Wilt covered his lack of scoring by shooting free throws much better than usual; in G5-G7 1962 ECF, he shot 85% from the free throw line. And Wilt is clutch. He scored the last two points for Warriors in that G7, and once scored at least 4 points in the last minute, and could've scored 12 of both team's last points in G7 of 1965 ECF, where he shot 80% on the field. He also went from scoring only 15 PPG in a series against Bulls to defend and rebound more (Jerry West himself noted this) to scored 25 points to win the series. He always stepped up his game in important situation. And uh, i'm not sure McGuire would be good for Wilt. He was a very unique coach, telling Wilt to score like crazy and never took him off the bench, only to explicitly made Wilt scored like a usual NBA superstar and give some of the scoring job to Meschery who was a fucking rookie. I wouldn't be surprised that in alternate world, McGuire made him shoot much less and instead turn him into shot block chaser who chasing every opponents. Also, Reed was there for motivation mostly. Had Bill Russell abused him, Frazier would went even more mental than already. He would try to defend Frazier instead since Russell was a super quick player who regularly chasing Baylor, who was the Jordan of that era.
@jaranarm
@jaranarm 6 лет назад
Frank McGuire's strategy was to play Wilt out of pivot more which partly explains his stats. But there are other factors. Tom Gola was out with injury since Game 2 and then came back in Game 7 where he scored and rebounded well (which is ironic because he played terribly the whole playoffs). Meschery was also hitting his shots and grabbing boards which took pressure off Wilt so he could concentrate more on defense. Wilt's teammates were also getting to the free throw line, going 31 for 34 combined, the best they've ever done. But then Guy Rodgers fouled out and when the Warriors started trailing Wilt went to work and tied the game by himself, scoring the team's last 5 points where he went perfect from the line (including a 3 point play). I don't know how that's not being clutch. And as I've stated it all came down to those two controversial plays in the final minute, both which were in Boston's favor. For me the biggest reason why the Warriors lost that Game 7 was because of McGuire allowing Paul Arizin to shoot a miserable 4 for 22 from the field.
@20fadhilRevolution
@20fadhilRevolution 6 лет назад
Woah. Those were awesome fact. I knew that Wilt went clutch many times, but i didn't know how much he got clutch in that game. All i knew is that he scored the last basket for Warriors, and Celtics got incredibly lucky with Sam Jones' shot that was super awkward. Also, when someone said in a Wilt video about unfair goaltending, i didn't know he was talking about Celtics vs Warriors G7. And what the hell was McGuire thinking about Arizin? He was shooting like shit in that series, and by his own account Wilt didn't have a reliable second scorer, who was Arizin...

This is fascinating to watch. The game is played foul line down since there is no three point line and although there is some good offense, there is some really poor spacing at times due to the lack of ball handling skills. It’s also exciting seeing the pace the game was played at back then
@X02Overdose
@X02Overdose 6 лет назад
Shonen Rules of the time limited certain aspects of ball handling. Although I doubt the players handles would be much better if they had rules like today it’s still something to consider
@WiltChamberlainArchive
@WiltChamberlainArchive 6 лет назад
Lack of ball handling freedom is just as important here as the perception of skill - the players could only do what the rules of the time allowed. Palms down dribbling meant a lot of restrictions when changing direction and protecting the ball.
@CasterShellz
@CasterShellz 6 лет назад
Wilt Chamberlain Archive agreed. It really affected spacing at times
@EnduringArts
@EnduringArts 6 лет назад
lol, lack of ball handling skills? The refs regulated how the ball could be handled, not the players fault. None of players today could dribble the ball up the court without being called for a carry or travel in that era. You had to keep a near perfect vertical trajectory when dribbling the ball up and down, very limited side to side motion. The ABA changed all that.
@CasterShellz
@CasterShellz 6 лет назад
EnduringArts I guess I misinterpreted it. My mistake. The rules did affect the way players back then handled the ball. The point I was trying to make was that it negatively affected offensive spacing based on the clips shown here.

Some context to this series: "Cherry observed that Reed, a prolific midrange shooter, was a bad matchup for Chamberlain. Having lost lateral quickness due to his injury, Chamberlain was often too slow to block Reed's preferred high post jump shots". Chamberlain had tore his patellar tendon during the 9th game of the season and sat out every game except the last 3. He came back just in time for the playoffs.

The greatest basketball player ever! I appreciate this channel very much as someone not old enough to have seen Wilt. Many myths about Wilt and why he was so dominant can be proven just that myths. This game for instance he started off shaky from what I know but played pretty good. Should have been given the ball more. Don't think he was afraid of the ball as he posted up the entire game in my eyes expecting to expose the mismatches. Some may argue he posted up too much but that's not wilt's job to decide if they should of spaced him out more. Ragnarok I don't respect your opinion if you're saying he'd be d league. Do you actually know anything about that era and the rules? Do you think everybody who met Wilt is all in on this big lie about wilt's strength? Wilt was the strongest NBA player ever. Did you watch this video? This is after knee surgery and he was still jumping that high. The finger roll how efficient and deadly it was his fadeaway that was unblockable. About Bill Russell backing him down the rules didn't allow people to plow other people over there is actually a video on this channel that shows why Wilt couldn't just use his strength like Shaq. Wilt is the greatest scorer ever, rebounder, top 2 defender, best passing center ever, strongest player ever, and most conditioned athlete ever. Nobody could do what Wilt could do or was asked to do as much as Wilt was.

Wilt would crush all of your favorite players. You don't have to believe it it's a fact. If you can find me one player in that era who was a plumber I'll admit I was wrong you can't though because just one of many myths people make up to rationalize the things Wilt did that nobody has ever come close to doing or will ever do. I'm a young suffering knicks fan so I've been reading through "When The Garden Was Eden" about our championship years and when i got to the chapter about game 7 I was and still am confused. Jerry West thought it was the worst game he ever played despite his 28 pts since he was getting the work from Walt Frazier, and Elgin despite his 19 was hindered as wilt was that much of a presence in the paint; SO WHY NOT GIVE IT TO WILT EVERY TIME! we had no answer for him defensively; they state that he might of been checked out mentally because willis was playing mind games with him earlier in the day in a shoot around before people got into msg but I don't buy it, thanks for the footage
@WiltChamberlainArchive
@WiltChamberlainArchive 6 лет назад
I don't buy that he checked out either - he's actually the only Laker who played a somewhat steady game that wasn't riddled with turnovers or missed easy shots. Maybe he posted up too much and Elgin couldn't drive (Elgin did in fact, not drive very much that game and I can see that maybe it was because of Wilt). But one would think, shouldn't Wilt post up to capitalize on the mismatch? Maybe, maybe not, the Lakers lost so I suppose anything different would/could/should be tried if they had to do the game over again. Interesting stuff to think about thanks for the comment.

There are always excuses for Wilt like many great like Jordan, Kobe, LeBron...except Wilt's excuses were mostly to show how much he's a loser. Think about it: 1965 ECF Game 7 could've been his greatest clutch game. He shot 80% from the field, he had 4 clutch points at minimum and 10-12 at maximum, with his last shot had him maneuvered Russell and dunked with 5 seconds left. Instead, that game was more famous for Havlicek shot the ball (Havlicek shot only 33% btw), and Wilt was so devastated, he began to feel the pressure of being called a loser that time (he had been slandered for years, but this was the year when he started to get truly angry and disappointed at himself). Same with this game, where Willis did nearly nothing in his 27 minutes of game, and yet people claimed Wilt's the one who choked, not West who got completely outplayed by Frazier that had like 19 assists and shooting at 71%..

20fadhil: Revolution i wouldn't call the strongest basketball player to ever walk the face of the earth a loser. Nor would you to his 7 foot 1 face if he was still around. As far as playoffs yes Wilt just couldn't make it happen but he got 1 ring. Wilt in my mind is the perfect example of at end of the day in understanding what a man or woman did in their life, exactly how impressive were they when it counted and when it didn't
@20fadhilRevolution
@20fadhilRevolution 6 лет назад
Hey, i never think Wilt's a loser. It's reporter, media and many people back then and now that did so. Read my comment again. It's about how Wilt shouldn't be blamed for many, if not most of his losses. Wilt's the best competitor against Russell, and the most skilled big man in NBA history. No one win against Russell...except Wilt in 1967, who swept Celtics with Triple Double average and a Quadrouple Double. If anything, i think with bit more luck, Wilt could've got 2-3 more rings.

Celtics Fan Since August 23, 2017 KySexual #11 - I'll tell you the truth so as to not tickle your ears. Prior to 1967, Chamberlain's Warrior and 76er teams had no shot at beating Boston. Boston had better teams. But Chamberlain beat Boston in 1967 easily. The 76ers would have beat Boston in 1968. But not only was Billy Cunningham injured, after blowing a 3-1 lead, in the 4th quarter of game 7, the 76ers did not give Wilt the ball! The 76er core players of Wilt, Greer, Walker and Jones shot a collectively were 28-78!!!!!!!!!! They were also 20-36 from the free throw line!!!! And they lost by FOUR POINTS. Wilt (Lakers) should have beat Boston in 1969. But in game 7 in LA when the Lakers mounted a ferocious comeback, Wilt injured his knee. When he asked to re-enter the game when Russell had 5 fouls, the Laker coach refused! LA lost by TWO POINTS! As for 1970, again, I believe Wilt assumed Reed could not score. But he did. And that fueled the Knicks the rest of the way. Chamberlain should have forced Reed to put the ball on the floor. Reed could barely walk! Instead, Wilt let Reed shoot and he made two jumpers.

C Howard As usual, a Wilt fan trying to divert the blame onto the teammates. Isn't it obvious there's a reason why the players didn't give Wilt the ball? And what did Wilt do with the Lakers after arrived? Nothing. Just continued to lose. Even after Russell was gone. Also, want to know why Wilt won in 1972? Because Willis Reed didn't play at all in the series.

All you guys have it all wrong as usual. You can’t take a player now and plug him into a 1970’s or 60’s league. Any player now has grown up watching basketball in the year 2000’s, etc. You would have to take a player now and have him grow up in the 50’s & 60’s for him to be a player in the 70’s. He would be on par with the players back then, his skill set and ability would be based off the knowledge and play of his era. All you guys say Curry, Durant, Lebron, etc. They would all be different players if they were born in the 50’s and grew up in the 60’s.
@alextwist9952

Ty Wilson agreed, its all about the era u grew up in. The guys in the league today were all influenced by the MJs and magic johnsons of the world. Thats why i think its scary to imagine if wilt grew up in this era.
@oteliogarcia1562
@oteliogarcia1562 6 лет назад
finally some sense. Also true if you take it the reverse way, if Wilt grew up in the same era as Shaq and there is no more unwritten ban on dunking (it was considered hotdogging during his time), and had seen Darryl Dawkins breaking backboards in the 70s and Karl Malone mugging the cameras after each dunk, Wilt would have been less gentle. He would have been terrifying, dunking on everybody and shoving people he didn't like.
@HarpoSpoke

Finally someone who knows how the time travel thing works. If MJ was born in the 1930s, he would have been Oscar Robertson in the 60s. If Wilt was born in 1990, he would have learned the game the way it is played today. He would have all the post up moves, would have dribbled more, and shot 3s even. Wilt could hit hook shots from 3 point land so the regular shot would be no problem for him today. And also, Wilt would be bigger, stronger, and faster today. His knees would be in better shape too. Wilt was stronger than Shaq as it was....imagine a guy who is bigger, stronger, and faster than Shaq today. It would be ugly for the league. Lebron is awesome, but he wouldn't be considered the best player in the world if Wilt was around today. Same with MJ in the 90s.

You are forgetting the rule changes. Particularly palming, traveling, hand check, and off the ball physicality. Wing players today palm or travel on almost every play by 1960's standards. Today's style of play was illegal Back then.. Even if you dropped a modern player into that time period with his complete skill set, he would quickly become a totally different player and look a lot like what you see here.
@oteliogarcia1562
@oteliogarcia1562 6 лет назад
Another good point. I think it was Freddy Mad Dog Carter, back when he was still writing for ESPN, who pointed this out to an "ignorant, young fan." We weren't allowed to palm the ball then, he said, otherwise we (they) would have developed the same "handles" that Magic, Iverson, etc. had. There was no mental or physical barrier to their development, it was just the rules. Also, a lot of modern post players would have been hampered had the travelling call been called strictly.

Everybody forgets just how intelligent and savvy Wilt was about offensive basketball. Note the lack of spacing in the paint here and how Wilt patiently used passes and fake passes to move the defense and set up himself and his teammates for easy baskets. It was during this part of his career that Wilt recognized that his scoring 50 points a game did not help his team win and he became an even better basketball player.

Great video, I would love to see more individual game performance videos of Wilt like this. The mixtapes and compilation videos are great, but lack background info. Like what year was the game, who was guarding Wilt, what statline did Wilt have that season/game, etc. I love the mythos that surrounds Wilt, but sometimes you need a little realism that only individual game performance highlights can provide. For instance: now that I know this is Game 7 of the 1970 Finals, I can see that according to the boxscore, Wilt went 1-11 from the free throw line that game. Kinda humanizes him doesn't it? While doing exceptionally well everywhere else in the game, he still goes 9% from the Free Throw line. Regardless, I appreciate the effort you put into these videos. Always such a thrill to watch the highlights of the Big Guy. Thanks!
@DJHomieJP
@DJHomieJP 6 лет назад
Also a quick question, would you consider rediting the Wilt Chamberlain Scouting Video? But instead of dividing the video highlights by specific moves or attributes, you instead edited it order (to the best of your knowledge) from the beginning of Wilt's basketball career, to the end? I think I would be fun to watch how he developed as a player, and you could watch knowing that a basket was made in the 50 ppg season, or an assist was when he led the league in assists. You can watch as he bulks up a bit more on the Lakers and slows down, but still see the way he dominates despite being older. Just a thought, thanks!

Well Wilt's the most unique basketball player there; in playoff, he often played a different game than his regular season, usually more defense than offense. Case in point: 1962 season. His 35 PPG average from 50 was caused by new strategy: Aside from deciding game 6 in East semi-final, where he got 56 Points, 35 Rebounds and 12 blocks, Wilt was asked to pass more and implicitly asked to not scoring like his season. By the end of the series against , the #1 scorer role were shared between Wilt and Tom Meschery, a rookie who went hot in the playoff and scored 8 more PPG because he took care of Gola and Wilts' points. Wilt himself had average FG, but his FT became 24/28 in the last three games for some reasons. In Lakers, he often switched between pure defender and second/third scorer depending on need; 1972 championship year had him scored 10.8 PPG against Kareem, and 19 PPG against Reed-less Knicks. He was praised in both series. And here, in this game. Reed was mostly only there for moral support; he only got 3 rebounds and 4 points with 4 fouls. Debusschere was the one that taking care of rebounds (17 rebounds) while Frazier taking care everything on offensive end (36 points on 71% shooting and 19 assists.) It seems that this game had everything went wrong; West couldn't guard Frazier, Baylor went a little cold on the drive, and Wilt couldn't convert his freethrows.

WCA, why didn't the Lakers simply fast break at every opportunity? If Willis was the offensive/defensive hub of the team, why didn't they hit the jets and find Wilt every or every other time down the floor? I know that though Coach Sharman asked him to play more like Bill Russell before the '72 season he sort of started playing like that during this time. I said that to say they needed him to be Wilt Chamberlain this game, not Bill Russell.

Wilhelm X you got that first statement backwards. And riddle me this, how come the Celtics couldn't continue their streak after Russell retired? Even though they had *MORE* HoF players than they did when the drated Russell? Which reminds me.....the Celtics were technically already a superteam before Russell was even draftted and the Celtics STILL couldn't win a chip until Russell arrived. I recognize that Russell had help there's no doubt about that, but at the same time russell is the reason why that team was successful in the first place.

Christina Glover not a trong enough argument? Better scorer by a mile, just as good a passer, just as good a defender, rebounding is the same. Statistically its not even close. Another great post from WCA. Thanks! One of the many false accusations I see about Wilt from people who never saw him play is that he was unsuccessful and unproductive in the playoffs. I've mentioned here before that his career scoring numbers are lower than for the regular season because a preponderance of his playoff appearances were later in his career when he was not scoring as much. Regarding his playoff success, I've just taken a closer look with some surprising results. Comparing players simply by counting rings is absurd, in my opinion. Anyone who watched Lebron's performance in the 2018 playoffs knows that a ring is not the only measure of greatness. Rings go to the best-coached, best functioning TEAM and not to the best player. Nevertheless, a player's greatness is usually reflected in the success of his teams throughout his career. I came up with a way of measuring this. I awarded three points for a ring, 2 points for losing in the finals, and one point for losing in the semifinals to the eventual champion. Then I divided the total of these points by the number of years in a player's career. I only looked at alpha players who were clearly the best players on their teams. The exceptions are when Kareem played with Magic (10 years), Shaq with Kobe (8 years), and Wilt with West (5 years). The results are given below. Note that Wilt was more successful in the playoffs than anyone but Russell (who played on the greatest team) and Magic (who played with Kareem for a decade): Bill Russell: 2.78 Magic Johnson: 1.77 Wilt Chamberlain: 1.54 Lebron James: 1.47 Kareem Abdul Jabbar: 1.45 Jerry West: 1.43 Michael Jordan: 1.33 Larry Bird: 1.08 Kobe Bryant: 1.00 Shaquille O'Neal: 0.89 Many assume that stars like Jordan, Kareem, Bird, and Shaq enjoyed more playoff success than Wilt Chamberlain, but rings aside, it just isn't true.
@jaybee5269
@jaybee5269 6 лет назад
P. S. It should be mentioned that there were fewer teams in Wilt's day, so there was a greater possibility of being on a champion, runner-up, or semifinal runner up. However, this is somewhat offset by the fact that players had less freedom to seek employment on super teams like Boston or big market centers like LA or NY back in the day. Wilt was one of the first to do both when he went to LA, but most great players spent their entire careers on the same teams, which may or may not have been championship contenders. Be that as it may, the point still stands: Wilt enjoyed more playoff success than anyone but Russell in his day - and more than anyone else all-time except for Magic (mostly with Jabbar).
@redace6649
@redace6649 6 лет назад
Wilt also is the only player to play on two teams that set new NBA records for most wins in a season. And despite Russell winning every year in the 1960s except for 1, the best team in the 1960s was Wilt's 1967 76ers who crushed Russell's Celtics that year.

This is one game they should have just told Wilt to score all he could, in the flow of the game. The Lakers would have won it, easily. He got most of his points, in this game, as in many others, from offensive rebounds and tip ins, which doesn't say a lot for his team mate's shooting, but a lot for Wilt's rebounding. Even half crippled, he was still the best, all around player on the court, in my humble opinion.

NY shooting 72% in the first half, mostly from the outside, can't blame Wilt for that. Another thought I had based on watching the 20 minutes of remaining footage of game 5 is that the 3 forward line-up NY used after Willis' injury really threw the Lakers off. Prior to that it looked like they were in control, so had Reed not been injured, there might never have been a G7.
