Wilt Chamberlain: 100 points in a game. Avg 50ppg/25rpg in a season. Most games over 90. Most games over 80. Most games over 70. Most games over 60. Lead league in scoring. Lead league in Rebounding. Lead League in Blocked Shots. Lead league in Assists. Lead league in total minutes played. NEVER Fouled Out of a game. Set 68 NBA records in 13 year career. No other player has ever even come close to Chamberlain's achievements. THAT is a G.O.A.T. end of conversation

@@scooter2220 Scooter, Let me explain what you don't understand: The reason the NBA doesn't acknowledge Wilt Chamberlain's greatness is because everyone else would have to line up behind him. TheyNBA always pushes the GOAT story. But they wouldn't be able to do it if they admitted Wilts greatness and everyone else had to line up behind him. That would mean the Best player is number 2 behind Wilt. And in anything, most people don't want to remember or care who comes in second. Whether it be car racing or track and field or Boxing or Football/Baseball. Nobody cares about 2nd place. There's no money in it. The NBA knows this and is simply a deceitful organization doing what it does for its own benefit.

People know about what an offensive force he was, but what makes him great is that he was an amazing defensive player, rebounder, and excellent playmaker as well. And, of course, because he played so many minutes, that's a big part of what allowed him to amplify his impact on the game. Part way through his career, he stopped being the first option scorer, and tended to play more of a defense-first and playmaking role. If he had played as an offensive first option for all of his career, he might still hold the record for most career points, despite only playing 13 seasons vs. the longer careers of Kareem and Le-James

A lot of people don't understand that Wilt had inherent strength: a natural level of better-than-average muscle bulk and strength. And THEN he began to seriously engage in weight-lifting for power and strength when he was about 18 years old--and continued with it for decades. His physician gave him a head-to-toe exam one year after the season was about to begin, and Wilt had gained over 4 inches of muscle throughout his torso. He was also a dedicated high jumper who was extremely proud of his vertical leap, and he loved running track for speed and distance. Put that all together, and Wilt was a once-in-a-lifetime athletic marvel.
@curbozerboomer1773

Yes!...In a few old film clips, he would sometimes receive the ball inbounds, like a guard would, then sprint down the court, taking those inhuman, long strides, and within a few seconds would be underneath the basket, either slamming it down, or distributing the ball. At times, it just seemed unfair, that he was just too big, strong, fast, intelligent, and plain scary to even be allowed on the court with mere mortals! In some ways, he was actually as gifted a player as Jordan--just a lot larger and stronger!

It’s funny that detractors like to say it was a different game then. Yet the court is the same length, width and same with the paint. Rim was 10’, ball was same size and there was a 24 second clock. Rules were similar as well, with some changes due to Wilts dominance. The difference is they played at breakneck speed the entire game, which they could do today if they want to. The only real difference is the 3 pointer. Pretty sure they would have figured out how to incorporate that into the game.

He probably didn't have the highest vertical ever, though it's hard to say for sure. He would almost never shoot from that far away unless it was to beat the buzzer, which he did do on occasion. He was actually known for having a decent long-range shot. Of course, with the 3 point rule, he likely would have taken a lot of 3-point shots. This almost happened, as he was about to return from retirement in the late 70's, and had been working on his 3 point shooting, but the negotiations fell apart at the last moment when Chamberlain took offense to something one of the team representatives did. Wilt could be a bit petty if you ask me. There are some weird stories about him over-reacting unexpectedly to the strangest things, like the story of him SPITTING on a complete stranger in an elevator after they asked him "how's the weather up there".

Yeah, it's not like Wilt choked in those playoff games. He has incredible playoff stats, and he was constantly giving his teams a chance to win. Every time Chamberlain moved to a new team, that team would instantly become a contender as a result, especially when he was in his prime. It's also important to remember that some of Wilt's teams came extremely close to beating the Celtics in the playoffs, and, on one occasion, his team DID beat the Celtics (with Bill Russell) in a playoff series. Luck can play a big role in those super close series, and it's funny how a bit of luck can change a player's legacy for better or for worse.

The most one can say about a supreme athlete--as a rule--is that he was the "best of his era"...but with WILT, forget about that! His stats, his nuanced playing style, his overall class on the court, make it obvious that WILT actually was the greatest B-Bal player of all time. The only possible knock on him, is that sometimes he would get moody, and not go full tilt, especially in his later years. Why he did this on occasion, is a subject for the shrinks of the world. No matter...he was obviously the greatest-of any era.

What people are so ignorant about is the time frame. Boston had a stranglehold on the league. Best owner best coach best collection of players. The Celtics and Hawks were the most financially stable teams. Everyone else was trying to stay afloat. Wilt was paid by Eddie Gottlieb to score and score some more. The offense went through Wilt. Boston had none of that. Russell didn’t have the expectations Wilt had. Not close. Championships in those days went through Boston and the only two teams that really challenged Boston were Wilts teams and the West Baylor Lakers. So when people use titles as a criteria back then they need to see that the NBA was in a much different frame of reference than they would ever be in again. The Celtics to their credit seized upon the environment and took 11/13 titles and 8 in a row. They had a stranglehold on depth $ and coaching. It really wouldn’t be a league of parity until the later 60’s.
