Wilt Takes Kareem to School 1972 NBA West Finals

25 year old Kareem got 36 year old Wilt mad in the 72 NBA West playoffs. Big Mistake! He blocked Kareem's sky hook twice in a row, stole from him, stripped the ball, power dunked on him, and blocked a Kareem dunk and pushed the ball and him back down to the court, no foul. Kareem at 25 was at his absolute physical peak; Wilt was 36 and had missed 70 games with a serious knee injury just 2 years before. But Wilt took Kareem to school during this West div title series. The Lakers shot just above 40% for the series but Wilt carried them when it counted. He held Kareem below 50% from the field. They beat the Bucks 4-2 and the Knicks 4-1 with Wilt the Finals MVP.

Wilt the true GOAT of basketball.
@realg5276
@realg5276 Год назад
That is probably true. He didn't have that balance of leading the offense that Kareem and Jordan had. It was one extreme or another. His ego might have been his biggest opponent. It will alway be a team game. Abdul-jabbar understood that early on and also with John Wooden at UCLA. Coach ask him do you want to break scoring records or win titles? Kareem said he wanted to win. He proved it.

@@realg5276 all false and extremely uneducated comment. Neither jabbar or jordan came anywhere close to the balance of things wilt had especially leading the offense and leading the defense which Is why Wilt impacts winning on both ends of the floor against far more hall of fame competition at one time than jordan or Kareem Winning without context rewards guys like Robert horry and bill Russell the most but when u add context, who u do it against matters. U replace jordan or Kareem situations with wilt and u get endless wins. Both have never ever won a playoff series against a team whom outnumbered their own in hall of famers by 2 or more. Wilt has done so numerous times and defended up to 4 more hall of famers than he had and faced 8 at once which Kareem and jordan never came close to Jordan faced several hall of fame less teams when he was winning chips. Even Kareem didn’t even have it that luxurious. Don’t even think about wilt having it that easy lmao Wilts ego was also so in check that he literally did whatever the team asked of him. U want scoring he gave it to u which was the game plan on his first team and which he did the best while impacting winning the best. Second team the game plan was for him to facilitate more which he did the best and then on his third team he was asked to rebound, defend, n field goal score better which he did the best and impacted winning the best as usual. Each team he balanced leading the offense better than the dam pgs themselves as well as any other star he ever played with. Gotta stop with the lack of education and spewing false information based off that nonsense

@@beenizz5102 yes, Wilt was definitely the statistics 👑, no one is suggesting he wasn't. But for a guy with THOSE numbers, the fact of the matter is he won only two 🏆. There were some failures in game 7's that a player of his caliber ( if he is THAT guy) caused people to question even today. Wilt was phenomenal, yes. But again, there were times Russell knew how to win 🏆, knocked some points off of Wilt's average to do so and definitely had the BIGGER impact on HIS team as far as WINNING!!! I was 16 when I watched that game and thought big mistake, never piss off Wilt Chamberlin. He was truly the greatest athlete of all time. He could still bench press 460 pounds when he was 59 years old. In 1954 as a 17 year old teenager Wilt worked in the catskills as a bellhop at Kutschers. Jabbar made the BIG mistake of making Wilt really angry. Most people don't realize that Wilt was playing on a bad knee injury that hadn't healed from a couple years prior - Wilt had suffered a potentially career ending injury when he ruptured a patellar tendon. But even with that unhealed injury, Wilt was still extremely powerful, he still had some surprising hops, he was fast, and he had a high basketball IQ. Wilt still had some moves too even if he was rusty and he made Kareem pay. I remember watching that game and the battle between the 2 behemoths was awesome.

You can cherry pick highlights but it doesn't change the fact that Kareem Abdul Jabbar kick Wilt Chamberlain's a$$ in that 1972 series. Wilt played a good game 6 and helped his team advance but let's be serious. Abdul-jabbar scored 37 points 25 rebounds 10 blocks. In another game he scored 40. Out rebounded Wilt in 3 of the 6 games. Kareem 202 points Wilt 59 points in that series. Lakers were lucky Oscar couldn't go in game 6 2nd half. They probably would of had a game 7.

For Wilt to admit that was a big step. No shame in needing help with Jabbar. Especially at age 35. Ironically a show of humility helped the Lakers win the series perhaps. Wilt wasn't known for his humility. Late regular season Kareem scored 50 points on Chamberlain. Then the first two games of the series he gives it to Wilt again. After that they made Jabbar work for his points. Force shots, deny him the ball. Wilt did a terrific job defensively for his team. It was a Russell like effort.

To be fair, Jabbar was a very athletic and skilled player, who would dominate today. He had big games against Chamberlain, but at a time post Bill Russell era, he was only able to get one title. Part of that reason was a great Knicks team and Chamberlain and the Lakers. I would take a prime Wilt over a prime Jabbar, for the difference in strength and boards. Both could score, but Wilt was on a different level defensively.
@realg5276
@realg5276 Год назад
Interesting though in this series Jabbar matched Wilt on the boards. He actually outrebounded Chamberlain in 3 of the 6 games. Kareem alway got a bad rap for his rebounding and defense. He was as good a shot Blocker as Wilt. Plenty of clips of Kareem swatting Chamberlain's finger rolls and even some of his dunks which took guts. If you took Wilt over Kareem you would be making a mistake. Who are you going to give the ball to at crunch time? Perhaps a last possession? Wilt didn't want the ball and couldn't make free throws. Jabbar was $ with that hook at clutch time and even famously made the game winning free throws in the 1988 finals at age 41. Coach Riley still called his #. That why Kareem is the GOAT among centers.

You gonna take some sh^t an announcer says and use it to prove that Wilt is not better than Jordan? Only Jordan gobblers say this kind of stuff, because deep down in their hearts, they KNOW Wilt was better. So they use this and that to show how Wilt isn't "worthy" of being the best. BUT he is. The GOAT can be anything you want it to be. That's why they go to great lengths to make it seem like Russell was better than him. It's almost comical.

With the minutes per game he was asked to play, I don't think even Wilt would have held up to play with this intensity, all of the time. Besides, I believe the officials were still hacked off because of Jabbar pole axing Hairston, while he was already down and hurt, and they had plumb put away their whistles here, where Jabbar and Wilt were concerned, otherwise both would have fouled out. I think the officials had decided to let these 2 big men determine the outcome of this game. Statistically, totaling both ends of the court, Wilt is #1, plain as day.

Interestingly, while Kareem outplayed Wilt in 4 of the 6 games (though Wilt was better in the last two games of the series), the Lakers still won. What nobody mentions is that the previous year in the play-offs, Wilt totally outplayed Kareem and yet the Bucks won. It goes to show that it's a team game. Also, the stats don't account for defense as blocks & steals were not counted then. The footage doesn't lie... Wilt was a better defender than Kareem, even at that late stage of his career.

Recall Jan 9th 1972. Lakes ride into Milwaukee on their 33 game winning streak only to find a 7-2 road block in their way. A Condor blocking shots seemingly from out of the ceiling. Abdul-Jabbar mercilessly scored 39 points and snares 20 rebounds while blocking 10 shots. A few if Wilt's finger rolls and even dunks swatted. This happened on National TV. Easy to find on RU-vid. Wilt's performance in the series vs. the Bucks. Game 1: Wilt 10 pts/24 reb/0 ast as the Lakers get crushed. The lakers scored just 42 points through the first three quarters. Titanically awful. Game 2: Wilt 11 pts/17 reb/4 ast as the Lakers win by one. Game 3: Wilt 7 pts/14 reb/4 ast and the Lakers win by three. Wilt took just three shots making one. They won but this performance just wasn't good enough. Game 4: Wilt 5 pts/11 reb/4 ast. Lakers get crushed again. Wilt shot 2 for 7 from the field and 1 for 8 from the line. Maybe one of the worst games of his career. Game 5: Wilt 12pts/26 reb/6 ast Wilt finally wakes up. Lakers win big. he even shot 8 for 8 from the line. Game 6: Wilt 20pts/24 reb/2 ast Wilt has his best game and scores more which is a good thing since Jerry West missed 21 shots. Lakers win by four So Wilt basically had two good games, one so-so one (game 1) and three frankly bad games. Not the most dominating of performances. The Lakers were frankly lucky to win this series as they got blown out in their two losses and it was very close in three of the other four games. I really wonder what the story is with the first three quarters of game one.

This post is disingenuous and loaded with Wilt propaganda. Kareem averaged 33 pts and 18 rebs against Wilt in this series. Wilt averaged 11 pts and 19 rebs in this series. These clips aren't exclusively from the series. They've taken out Wilt highlights from other games against Kareem. Wilt had games of 1-8, 4-16, 3-12, 2-7, 2-3, and 8-12. Wilt shot 45% from the field and 43% from the line. So how the hell did Wilt take Kareem to school.

Points 43.2% FG I am a huge fan of both players but this post is clearly from the position of trying to make Wilt look good. And it is deceptive in doing so. Why was Kareem's FG% so much better the first 2 games than Games 3 through 6? Because in Games 1 and 2, Wilt guarded Kareem mostly man to man. In Games 3 through 6, the Lakers put Wilt behind Kareem and then sent a double team on most possessions to help Wilt. It was good coaching as the Lakers played better in those games. The shooting in this series was abysmal. The Lakers shot 40.5% and the Bucks shot 43.6% from the floor. Wilt shot 45.2%FG while Kareem shot 45.7%FG Wilt was 44.3%FT. Kareem was 75.9%FT The Lakers won the series 4 games to 2. Interesting Fact: The Bucks outscored the Lakers in total points 636 to 622 for the series. Kareem: 202 Points 105 Rebounds 29 Assists Wilt: 65 Points 116 Rebounds 20 Assists Blocks, Steals, and Turnovers were not recorded as an official stat until 1975.

When you look at the title of the video compared to what happened during the series it is suspicious If this was a book you'll find it in the fiction section I look at it in reality two great players. Wilt past prime but a force inside. Kareem in his young prime, agile, quick with coordination. Statistically its probably the most extreme domination your gonna see of two Centers at the elite level. Kareem gave Chamberlain a prison pounding. Outscoring WIIlt 202-59 in 6 games. Wilt couldn't even dominate the boards against Kareem. Chamberlain edged him by 9 rebounds the enteie series. It was a turning point for Wilt Chamberlain. In a sense he finally grew up a little and became part of a team. Chamberlain took his bearing, focused on helping LA win. Wilt showed humility to his teammates after game 2 of the series. He stood up and talked with Kareem's 50 points scored on him fresh in his mind and well as Jabbar's dominating performance s in game 1 and 2 The Lakers were lucky to be 1-1 but Chamberlain had to stand up.." admit that the 1st time in my life I needed some help guarding him" The Lakers defens collapsed o. Jabbar for the rest of the series forcing him to work hard for his points. Chamberlain was able to play defense and rest offensly Wilt played some good defense block some of Kareem's shot in the 4th quarter. Jabbar was the whole team for Milwaukee as Oscar's injury was fortunate for LA. Anyway Wilt Chamberlain fans on here are special. Reality isn't necessarily on the menu.

I agree, titles off. Anyway, here is another way to look at the stats. Kareem averaged 33.7 points on 32.8 shots and a FG% of 45.7%. During the season, he averaged 34.8 points on 24.9 shots with a FG% of 57.4%. This means he scored one less point on 8 more shots than he would have. Statistically, this was by far his best season ever. Wilt did an outstanding job on defense.
