@jingqi9106
@jingqi9106 3 года назад
The Logo, Jerry West, had a great year in '72 and led the NBA in assists while scoring 25 ppg. As per 1st year Coach Bill Sharman's request, Wilt played lock down defense in the paint and dominated the boards with an average of 19 boards a game which allowed the great laker fast break to get off to a running start. Even though both players were in the twighlight of their careers, Wilt and West played at such a high level on one of the greatest NBA teams of all-time.

That was a great team, and a great year. For a long time that was my favorite Laker team because of the nostalgia of my youth. However, that changed in 1985 when the Lakers finally beat the Celtics in six games. That day was one of my sports highlights of all time. I will never forget either team.

Agreed, but I think he should have modified his use of Wilt, to not take away so much of his scoring ability. Sharman and Hannum, both pretty much hand cuffed the greatest scoring machine the game has ever seen. What is difficult to believe, but is true, is that Wilt was better at defense than he was at offense. He always had monster rebound and unrecorded blocked shots numbers, but still scored 30, or more, in his scoring days. It is my contention that his teams could have won more championships if they had turned him loose to score, more than they did in his non scoring years. I am not claiming that I know this. I wasn't there, other than watching games on TV. It is just an observation from watching a lot of game footage here on youtube and learning how those 2 coaches handled Wilt.
@rtosborne3
@rtosborne3 2 года назад
@@wmden1 - Agreed, and I am old enough to remember those days. Under no circumstances should Wilt take less than 15-20 shots per game. Primarily, because he was unstoppable, but also, because it would have opened up other shooters even more. Still Hannum and Sharman coached Wilt-led teams to the 2 greatest seasons ever to that point; and they are the only decent coaches he played for.

Would have loved to see him on the Bulls in the 90's, they probably could have won 10 Championships in a row and got close to 80 wins that one year. West and Frazier had sweet jump shots also and would average big numbers today.

Don't be ridiculous! Since the Bulls never had a great center... If they had Wilt, they wouldn't have lost a single game as long as the key players were healthy. The 90s Bulls would have at least 12 championships if Jordan did not retire and if Phil Jackson were allowed to coach. They had 2 three-peats with in 8 seasons. If Jordan didn't retire they would have had 8 championships in 8 seasons. Then, for the 99 season the Bulls were without Jordan and Jackson. That allowed the Spurs to win. Then the Lakers hired Jackson and that led to a three-peat for the Lakers. Had Jordan and Jackson been with the Bulls from 99 - 2002 they would have had an additional 4 championships at least, perhaps even more. With no Jordan retirements the Bulls would have won at least 12 straight championships.

For the bulk of this game, the Knicks had four HOF players on the court: Walt Frazier, Jerry Lucas, Dave DeBusschere, Earl Monroe. All of those guys were also on the recent 75 greatest players list. Two other players getting the most minutes on that team included Bill Bradley, a solid All-Star player, who was inducted into the HOF (I believe predominantly for his international play), and a gritty, 6’10” defensive-specialist and role player, who would go onto become one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, Phil Jackson. It was against that team that an aging, injured Wilt had this amazing performance. Absolutely incredible.

This is wilt chamberlain arguably at 3/4 speed whose lateral movement was nowhere near what it used to be and he was still intimidating in the centre position. This wasn't his finesse game but when he wanted to he could dunk and nobody in the game of basketball could stop him! Imagine what would have happened if the wilt that had a 50.4 average points for a season with 25 rebounds add 48.5 minutes a game and that one season alone stands out, he was playing Bill Russell 9 or ten times and he scored 62 points against the Boston Celtics and throw in a remarkable record 55 rebounds, if that wilt has turned up and he had, had a team with a peak West or a Elgin Baylor.

@shaunholt
@shaunholt 3 года назад
Is that a mark against him??? Height is a major advantage in basketball. The short guys are 6'2, 6'4". Guys like Kobe and Harden look small out there, but put em next to a regular ~5'10" person and you see how big they really are. Centers are pretty much all 6'11" and up. 6'11" would be a bit under-sized.
@JayZoop
@JayZoop 3 года назад
@@shaunholt I'm implying that Wilt's extreme athletic ability for his height is what made him what he was, not that he possessed extremely great passing, dribbling, and leadership skills similar to Larry Bird, Jordan, Kobe, etc.
@shaunholt
@shaunholt 3 года назад
@@JayZoop you have to take into consideration his era tho. No three point line, the object of the game was to get as close to the basket as possible. Wilt was the tallest guy, so he was to camp under the basket and protect the rim. That's how the game was played then. Three point line helped make the game more about skills you pointed out. Bird, tremendous passer & took a few threes. Now all bigs are expected to be able to dribble, pass and shoot from distance.
@shaunholt
@shaunholt 3 года назад
Chamberlain was an exceptional athlete. Track and field star and volleyball player. The dude was athletic. He was mobile, versatile. Lean. I think he could've easily adapted to today's game. Much like how Michael could've been a 3-point threat if he wanted to. But in his day, bigs were never taught or expected to handle the ball. Magic & Bird changed this. Put Durant in Wilt's era and Durant would've just been a post player too. Put Wilt in today's era, and I think he could've easily developed those other skills. Just weren't expected in his era of centers.

My fav player to watch...Sir Charles...No one comes close...Wilt was SOOO dominant , they had ta down-play hs accomplishments , cuz so many of his records were gonna end up being too far ahead of his time...Wouldn't be fun yet acknowledge to a certain degree , Wilt Chamberlain. If all stats were taken back then , today , they might say...Who does that Jordan guy think he is....Chamberlain?? Wilt was delt a crappy hand interms of , He was so much better than everyone else , they HADTA downplay it... and THAT'S why he was so braggadocio. Best player to ever play...still needed love...I find that thought...insperational.

Admittedly, the NBA players today are perceptibly better athletes. However, the game has tragically lost the concept of teamwork and unselfish play. Watching this clip is vastly more entertaining than the run and gun style today. The three point show hit has eliminated the dominant role of the center and post play and has pushed it on the perimeter thus rendering it predictable and boring. Long live the game of yesteryear
