"Brain Over Body" - A study on the willful regulation of autonomic function during cold exposure
The defence of body temperature against environmental thermal challenges is a core objective of homeostatic regulation governed by the autonomic nervous system. Autonomous mechanisms of thermoregulation are only weakly affected by top-down modulation, allowing only transient tolerance for extreme cold. There is however, anecdotal evidence of a unique set of individuals known for extreme cold tolerance. Here we present a case study of a 57-year old Dutch national, Wim Hof, the so-called “Iceman”, with the ability to withstand frequent prolonged periods of extreme cold exposure based on the practice of a self-developed technique involving a combination of forced breathing, cold exposure and meditation (collectively referred to as the Wim Hof Method, henceforth “WHM”). The relative contributions of the brain and the periphery that endow the Iceman with these capabilities is unknown. To investigate this, we conducted multi-modal imaging assessments of the brain and the periphery using a combination of fMRI and PET/CT imaging. Thermoregulatory defence was evoked by subjecting the Iceman (and a cohort of typical controls) to a fMRI paradigm designed to generate periods of mild hypothermia interspersed by periods of return to basal core body temperature. fMRI was acquired in two separate sessions: in a typical (passive) state and following the practice of WHM. In addition, the Iceman also underwent a whole body PET/CT imaging session using the tracers C11-hydroxyephedrine (HED) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) during both thermoneutral and prolonged mild cold conditions. This acquisition allowed us to determine changes in sympathetic innervation (HED) and glucose consumption (FDG) in muscle and fat tissues in the absence of the WHM. fMRI analyses indicated that the WHM activates primary control centers for descending pain/cold stimuli modulation in the periaqueductal gray (PAG), possibly initiating a stress-induced analgesic response. In addition, the WHM also engages higher-order cortical areas (left anterior and right middle insula) that are uniquely associated with self-reflection, and which facilitate both internal focus and sustained attention in the presence of averse (e.g. cold) external stimuli. However, the activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) was unremarkable. Finally, forceful respiration results in increased sympathetic innervation and glucose consumption in intercostal muscle, generating heat that dissipates to lung tissue and warms circulating blood in the pulmonary capillaries. Our results provide compelling evidence for the primacy of the brain (CNS) rather than the body (peripheral mechanisms) in mediating the Iceman's responses to cold exposure. They also suggest the compelling possibility that the WHM might allow practitioners to develop higher level of control over key components of the autonomous system, with implications for lifestyle interventions that might ameliorate multiple clinical syndromes.

Well, it's literally ancient technique. He just found out about it, thats all. He admits that too. It's an ancient kundalini breathing exercise - that's what Wim said. I know nothing about kundalini exercises, I just believed him. But yeah, it's great that it's getting mainstream attention.

@@michalvalta5231 Wim is quite open about this stuff. You can even hear him give 'false' information on what's happening in the body during his techniques during his earlier public method sharing moments versus later. At first, all he knew was 'it works'. And only now is he beginning to see what he's doing to his body and mind by using his own technique. His most recent public showcases are a lot more accurate than his previous ones. At first he was talking just about 'energy' and the 'pineal gland in the brainstem' which... is only like 25% correct. His most recent explanations are a lot more informed. He still is a very spacey individual though. That's not a bad thing, but it's something that scares off the scientifically inclines among us when they hear him speak. Take notice though: that does not make this any less important. It is absolutely key that people, including scientists, figure out exactly how this works and why it works because... for many people this can actually work.

From what I’m learning about with Dr Crum? At Stanford (Huberman Lab podcast) “Science” has definitely started accepting the mind as a powerful variable in how the body reacts. The studies she talks about with milkshakes and placebos are very interesting. I think we are slowly but surely getting there is my point :)

I think Wim explains it quite good in his recent appearance at Russell Brands podcast "Under the skin". He demonstrates the technique for Russell and during the meantime Wim gives an explanation of what's happening in the body scientifically. If you or anybody else doesn't wanna hear the whole episode, start listening at about 55 minutes in and forward. Bless mother nature and bless Wim Hof for saving my life!
@KindOldRaven
@KindOldRaven 4 года назад
That's actually easily explained. What's not easily explained is how far the effects go, if that makes sense. You are basically turning your blood alkaline, which has been considered a bad thing by science for a long time... hyperventilation does the same thing, but with a very big exception: with this method you only do this for a very short time and then return to balance. You give your body and blood time to return to baseline by holding your breath, letting CO2 levels build up again and temporarily increasing blood pressure in the brain (the 'push' at the end of a round of his breathing). This is basically 'training' your body by making it alkaline and back to normal in a short period of time. While doing this, you're basically meditating, because all you're focused on is the technique. It's a double whammy and both his breathing *and* meditation have scientifically proven effects on body and mind. This isn't all that's to it, but it's a start and the part that can be proven. This is a very, very global view of the entire thing though. It's kind of like the cold showers: the cold showers 'shock' your body into releasing all kinds of neurotransmitters and chemicals and also force your capillaries to contract and then slowly release afterwards. You can basically view this like you would strength training for muscles: expose to stress, adapt, progress, adapt, get better/stronger/faster/more resilient.

Wim oxygenates his cells calms his mind and burns glucose at an accelerated rate to protect his body. Amazing.
@KindOldRaven
@KindOldRaven 4 года назад
It's even deeper than that. He does oxygenate his cells... but during that phase the brain actually receives *less* oxygen. But, but letting CO2 levels get close to normal during the breath holding phase of his breathing technique, combined with that last final inhale and 'push' you basically force your body into alkaline state and back to normal in a very short amount of time, thus restoring balance. Wim's method works, is very intriguing (even if it's an adaptation of old techniques almost lost to modern man) but his explanations are often off, especially during his older videos and recorded talks. That doesn't matter though, it still works. Just saying this because some scientific bros will get mad if you just repeat what Wim has said in the past. If you do this regularly (and safely) this is basically a form of training. You're just not training your muscles or endurance per se, you're training a totally different response and as far as we can tell, this may just very well have benefits for many people.

This is an old teccnique practiced by the yogis of India. The would do the same breathing techniques and mind control while sitting in the snow. They would produce so much heat, the snow around them would melt. Another yogi was put into a cave with no food or water. It was said he slowed his body down so much that after 30 days he had not lost any weight and was still as energetic as when he started. He essentially went into hibernation. Many people can fast for 30 days but will normally lose weight, but there are not many people who can go without water for more than a week, especially if they are fasting. The Kundalini method of yoga teaches many breating techniques. One of them is called the breath of fire. It is rapid sustained very deep breathing for as long as possible. The body will heat up and if there is any pain it will dissapate and not be experienced during the rapid breathing. Breath of fire is also used when you may need to do a difficult physical task.
@BigMoonShot
@BigMoonShot 5 лет назад
If I'm not mistaken when they took them out of habitat they weren't able to duplicate those results of heat in snow.
@NunoJoelPrivado

Fernesque Golan You do understand that the increase in metabolic rate to generate such heat comes hand in hand with a much higher caloric expenditure ? The notion that JUST mind over matter cavalierly allows you to postpone hypothermia indefinitely belongs to the realms of Unicorn land, the same with anecdotal stories of hermit monks, reality still has to conform to the general rules of Thermodynamics.
@DecepticonLeader
@DecepticonLeader 5 лет назад
@@NunoJoelPrivado I don't think the yogi who sat in the snow, melting it are the same ones who hibernated. Also, none of his examples says they could go on indefinitely. I think he meant that the guy who went into hibernation was still energetic when he woke up, not that he was awake and energetic the whole time. There was a case of a guy who fell off a cliff somewhere in a warmer climate and somehow survived in some sort of hibernation. I don't recall how it happened exactly. But it's not unheard of. It's just unusual and probably takes practice before you can do it. Not losing any weight after 30 days is what I would take with a grain of salt however.

For me, this is the best thing about wim hof, he doesn't shy away from the science, he embraces it. So many yoga/new age teachers are all about the mysticism and making crazy claims about what they can do.. as a very logical/scientific leaning person I was always turned off by this. Had Wim not done any of these studies to back up some of his claims (some things he's said are still maybe a little far fetched for me ha) I probably would not have given his method a second thought. But since he sought to prove there was something to this, I tried it. My daily life has considerably improved over the past 4 months. (No major injuries or disorders, I just wasn't as happy and energetic as I am now). I feel like a better person and I feel like I can give the ones I love more happiness then I could have last year. Thank you Wim, you are a truly humble and wonderful person. Maybe one day I can shake your hand and thank you in person.

Thank u Wim! I will be in Utrecht and Houten Sept 20- Oct 4. Would love to meet you! I am going in honor of my mom who I lost a month ago. She lived through WWII at 13 yrs old in Holland. She didn't come to the states till she was 30. We found her diary, where we found the word "moed" throughout. Strength. Courage. That is you to me. I haven't been back to Holland since i was 16. I cant wait to come home. Visser strong. I love that you decided to take care of you, and search to nature. It is ultimately where we are from. Please keep in touch, and dank ya from this little Dutch girl in America. Moed Lieffje! Laura (Visser)

Wim Hof went through trauma of losing his wife. Relating to his trauma, I had built 1,000 hours in LearJet 24’s in 18 months and had two complete melt downs afterwards. These melt downs gave me the flexibility to adapt & change to the high altitude flying environment for 18 years. During my 2 year University Degree at ERAU in Daytona Beach, Florida I experienced human, Chi, God energy. Events happened in my life because of it and I am here to write & talk about it.

It’s not a miracle, not even close. Western science hasn’t been around 300 yrs let alone many millennia. Wim Hof has exposed and built on what was already known in other known. practices.

Sure it is nice to be able to withstand cold but that´s not why the science is so important. Helping people fight depression and get back in control that´s where the true benefit of this method lies. That´s why i´m learning this and spreading the word. keep that inner fire burning :)

“Change, however small, can gradually transform a life.” Yup. As someone with depression, I can’t believe there’s something 100% natural that can make me feel so good with so little effort. Exercise is wonderful. It certainly makes me feel great, but this is even better because it’s easier and so I can actually do it even when I’m super depressed.... You’re just lying there, literally getting high on your own supply. It really is a high. I’m truly addicted... to myself.

I did Hypnobirthing and the mind/body/pain mechanism is absolutely real and controllable. After watching this, i decided to try it. I took a quick warm shower to wash my hair and body, then filled the bath with cold water. After doing some breathing I got in.....and immediately abandoned the controlled breathing, hyperventilated, and panicked to the point I started crying. Hmmm. Didn’t expect that. So I reminded myself to control my breathing and immediately after about 2 breaths the water temperature became irrelevant and I could relax in the water. The mind is powerful.
