The football reporter has it right, I wouldn't want to watch football if it was just a league full of Wimbledon's......but nor would I if it was a league full of Real Madrid's, Manchester Utd's or any other club. What Wimbledon did was unique and will never happen again in this age of soulless. corporate, money grabbing football. The game I grew up loving has died, and Wimbledon were part of that. Love them or hate them, they were always controversial and (whisper it quietly) contrary to what the 'experts' might say, they could play a bit as well.
They did what they had to do to survive. Even compared to recent Burnley, Stoke or Bolton sides, their budget was minimal and they still finished comfortably mid table for nearly 15 years and their style evolved under Kinnear. Even Vinnie Jones was a better player than he was given credit for.
This is a real football club, as well as AFC Wimbledon (the true spiritual continuation) whom immediately followed on from them. Those club/nickname stealing franchisers from Milton Keynes aren't fit to polish the crazy gangs boots.
Barry Lendrum The London Programme used to be on Friday nights but I will always remember the cracking theme tune both at the start and the finish. Also remember the LWT Productions bit at the end with the grey background that ran between 1993-95.
At the time(and Christ it seems so many yrs ago)I being a long suffering Spurs fan,I probably bitched&moaned about them like everyone else! ,But when I think about it,apart from the odd live game(I didn't have Sky Tv)and I was busy working and come Sunday,I was engrossed in the Serie A(Italy)football,so I really didn't get to see them too often, and therefore knew very little about them! ..But watching this Video, all u could do was"Tilt ur Hat"to them!.. One thing I do remember reading and hearing Joe Kinnear saying That whenever they played Man Utd(at Old Trafford)they were always treated well and he had a really good relationship with SAF, who also gave them plenty of compliments, saying they always turned up and gave Man U,"All stars"a tough game(I suppose coming from a "Tough upbringing"himself Fergie had no issue with them at all.l?) .But watching this Tv show,(London Program),which seems like "A1 journalism" compared to the crap they're showing these days,it def jogs the memory!. Good stuff and full credit to Wimbledon for "Rocking the boat" and adding some much need colour to the game(which is so needed these days of Corporate BS Pansy Ass football!)
that's what the Premier league lacks ordinary blokes doing extraordinary things . All these fancy Dan players detached from the fans. Football Today isn't as fun .
The trip to Spain was a three team tournament with each match lasting 45 minutes From El Pais newspaper, 12/10/1993: (translated) “Racing Santander won its triangular half-time trophy yesterday after beating Real Madrid and English Wimbledon, both 1-0. Madrid, who barely struggled and only played with his first team in the half game against Wimbledon, also struggled to win, 3-2.”
What was Mark Lamarr doing at Deano's stag do? Anyway as a Liverpool supporter I can say Wimbledon definitely put the fear into every team back then. It's a shame what happened, I miss them in the top flight.
Joe Kinnear. Second greatest manager in my opinion after the incomparable Harry Bassett. I was at this game, and all the home games of this period as I was a Season Ticket Holder. I still have my "Crazy Gang" Certificate which game with it!
