Nasty! If I'm doing any winching, I always put a jacket or a bit of old carpet on the winch cable. If it does snap, that will take any 'snap back' out of the flying cable. Glad you lived to tell the tale.

Extremely lucky mate. Ego damage can be the worst 😂 but as you say, live and learn. Had a shackle brake and a D link came through the back window, glanced of the headrest of the drivers seat and stick in the roof next to the windscreen, which it also shattered, missing my head by about an inch. I felt the wind from it passing, then also from my arse. It took quite a good tug to get it out the roof.

Lucky Luck Lucky bastard. Mate, been meaning to catch up in watching this one (MrsMidgers did the ironing this week ;) ) but wow. Close call. It reminds me of a video from a couple of years back - this company in LA does muscle car videos - they had a Mercury Comet out on a drive that had a sticky throttle, no harnesses, and no handbrake. The driver had to ride the brakes to stop the thing running away with him - but they eventually overheated and failed - and they ended up smashing into the back of some cars at the lights, injuring them both and writing off his pride and joy. They managed to walk away from it and had a good period of reflection at the end of the video similar to yours. I'm glad you're still here mate, even if you look like Buster Gonads for a bit!!

Thank you for sharing with us even the low sides. We have all learned a lesson today from your oversight, although it was less painful for us. You might want to install a cut-off switch and a bypass valve on the hydraulics to prevent anything like this happening in the future. Despite a lesson learned, we are still human, and cannot expect to not be distracted or make the same mistake in the future.

It is so easy to get distracted by customers, so don't beat yourself up over that one. The accident will now keep you more aware of what you are doing, so it might be a blessing in disguise. The main thing is no customer got severely injured, although you may be sore for a while yet. Stay safe, buddy, and I hope you heal quickly. A valuable lesson to see and learn from a viewers point of view. Recovery work is a very dangerous occupation if you don't have your wits about you. Take care,Ben👍

What can I say? Thank whoever that you had the sense to use a synthetic rope. I have only ever seen one winch cable break before and unfortunately that involved H.M. Coroner. Not a nice thing to see. I only ever use synthetic rope now. Really pleased to see that you have escaped relatively unscathed, especially when you know what other outcomes can be. Write a plan as to how you are going to avoid any repetition. One last thing. Does your winch not have an overload clutch? I have only ever used electric winches, which die when overloaded and shaft driven pto systems, which have always had a safety clutch. Stay lucky.

I am one of those pain in the axxx customers that like to keep an eye on things myself. I have two cars that *cannot* be jacked under the sill. One is a Jaguar XJ with an aluminium body; the edges of the sill are just too soft to take the weight, and the other is a Peugeot 604 which has not jacking points on the sills at all; the factory jack goes into the rear subframe or the front cross member. The problem is that so many people in the trade just won't listen to me when I tell them this. Therefore I like to keep an eye on people. Normally I say "would you mind jacking where I ask you to because I'm a bit sensitive about it" and 80% of people seem okay with that. I just wonder from your perspective, is there a better way for me to approach it?

Glad you’re ok, it looks like your lever is fouling the metalwork. Could that be the cause? Also, guess what? Somehow, I have been unsubscribed, just subscribed again.

So weird the subscribing thing, annoys me. Nah the lever doesn't foul anything. I might look to get it serviced soon

Close and very lucky call bud. Thank god it wasn't a wire rope you'd be dead now or badly hurt. But on the other hand if it was a wire it may have ripped the anchor point off rather than snapping. But least your ok 👍

Yeah it's hard to tell isn't it. I still believe in synthetic. Although it snapped the thought of a wire cable hitting me is a different story.

@@SleafordRecovery yeah true I've never used a synthetic rope just worries me pulling a 50k machine with a plastic rope. Would the insurance pay up if that ever happened 🤔 But glad your ok 👍

And that’s how it happens, a moments distraction. If the idiot customer hadn’t been distracting you you’d have noticed that winch creeping and the rope tension wouldn’t have built up. That’s the golden rule with winching never ever get in the kill zone in case the cable breaks. The same with lifting things never ever go under a lifted load. You didnt have much choice, apart from watching the resulting cable break from a distance. Your first thought was obviously to shut the winch off. Luckily that winch line was synthetic rope, it may have had enough inertia to cause those wheals, but not enough weight to cut you in half. Had it been a steel rope it could have been a different thing altogether. How did your micro manager customer cope with seeing you on the ground? Perhaps he now understands why you were trying to keep him out of harms way.

Totally agree with you mate, I learnt a big lesson that day, I'm always safe, but distraction can be a killer. Cheers for commenting

Bloody hell Ben, that was a very lucky escape, every day is a school day. Oh don’t blame us as bad influences 😮 things / accidents happen, main thing is even with bruises cuts etc & some extra unwanted or expected damages to the truck, your alittle scathed but otherwise ok. Daniel.
