In this episode, we'll shoot some great old Winchester takedown leverguns and then we'll head down to the shop and show how the different takedown mechanisms work and how to adjust them if they get a little loose. Look for a model 1885, 1886, 1892, 1894 and 1895 takedown.

I had an 1894 takedown in 25-35 for a short time. A friend of mine decided he couldn't live without it and made an offer I couldn't refuse so it now lives in his gun safe. Definitely neat guns.

You always have the best firearms! None of my Winchester lever guns, save for my 9422s, are takedowns. I never knew that the 1885 was available in takedown, nor that it was ever chambered in 20 ga. Mine is a pip-squeak, .22 WCF, very similar to the .22 Hornet. You live in beautiful country, God has blessed you real good!

Thanks! The 1885 takedown shotguns are pretty unusual, but really fun to shoot. Because of the thin shotgun barrel, they're really light.

Great informative tutorial - I have a 1886 45/70 & an 1892 44Magnum which are both takedowns - as they are both relatively new they are still tight as a drum - very handy to know how to adjust them through when the time rolls around. Thanks again for all you do for us lever gun tragics.

Well, talk about good timing. I just acquired my first 1885 takedown and was wondering what the large screw, small screw and dog inside the extension were for. From just looking at them it seemed they served no purpose. My next move was going to be inquiring about them on the WACA website but you saved me that step. These are great videos. Very informative and a lot of fun too. Looking forward to many more.

love my SA22 takedowns... the main key as it seems to me for avoiding the error which cracks a lot of those stocks is you need to use the trigger GUARD as leverage rather than the pistol grip plus retracting the bolt enough

Very good video! Much easier to tighten up a Winchester T/D than a Savage 1899. With the Savage the threads have to be peened toward the muzzle preferably with a tool made to fit the threads but, can be done with an altered punch.

You’ve got some Incredible views there in God’s back yard. I’ve read several gunsmiths say that the takedown block adds quite a bit of strength to the receiver where the mag tube and barrel threads meet. Maybe you could show a Savage 99 takedown, I assume it would be similar to the 1895.

I picked up a '94 Takedown the other day. Seemed like an excellent deal after negotiations about the receiver having been drilled for a scope mount and someone switching out the stock for a shotgun stock (I can always find another stock). However some nimrod at some point in time cranked the magazine tube lever too hard in essence getting it stuck to where I dare not apply the amount of force that would be needed to get it unscrewed. I have an idea and your being from what I can tell the foremost expert on the takedown models out there, I thought I'd ask you about it and bounce an idea off of you before I dare try it out. I'm thinking liquid nitrogen. At -346f I have calculated the shrinkage of the receiver around the mag tube to be roughly 8-1/2/1000”, with dry ice about 2-1/2/1000”. Do you think that this process + cranking the mag lever to the left, right, left right repeatedly would free it up? Thank you for you video's, greatly appreciated, Ken

I've had good luck by soaking the joint with a penetrating oil (Kroil is my choice) for a day or two. Take the forend loose and slide it up as far as you can to get to the front and open the action to get to the back. After soaking, apply heat to the receiver over the area where the mag tube threads in. If it still doesn't come loose, rap on the receiver with a rubber mallet while applying pressure. This method hasn't failed me so far on stuck mag tube.

Great video, thanks. Question for you. I have a new (to me, not new gun) Chiappa 1892 clone. It has an issue where it seems either the receiver threaded end of the magazine tube is a little short or the timing of the locking mechanism at the muzzle end of the magazine tube is a little early. (There is no discernable X & Y play across the takedown joint but with the latch in place you can still twist the joint some amount. If the latch isn't in place and the tube is turned an extra 45 deg. the lock up is solid). Is it possible to shorten the receiver end of the magazine tube (slowly and gently) so that you can rotate one revolution further so everything sits tighter?

Excellent info 👍. You share so much info that you don't get anywhere else. I was thinking about the 1895 it's one of my favorites especially with the lyman sight. Do you think it would be possible to have multiple barrels and cartridges for the take down? Like going from the 30-06 to 25-06 or 35 whelen or even a different dimension cartridge like the 35 Winchester that your hunting rifle? I think it would be awesome to have that versatility in one rifle. Another question do you see any accuracy loss or reliability issues with the 1895 take down? I subscribed can't wait to see what you have best Thanks
@thecinnabar8442
@thecinnabar8442 3 года назад
That's an interesting thought, Brian! They are quite rare, but Winchester actually made a few multi-barrel sets for the model 1895. Most I've seen were two different lengths of the same caliber, but there is one wet in the 1895 book by my friends Rob Kassab and Brad Dunbar that has a 30-06 and 30-03 barrel. I'm sure that multi-barrel sets could be made from any of the 30-06 family of cartridges, which covers a wide range of calibers. The rimmed cartridges have different feed mechanisms and probably wouldn't work with the rimless (30-06 family) cartridges. The 35 WCF, 405 WCF, 38-72 and 40-72 are close enough that I'm sure a multi-barrel set could be made for them as well. I have seen a 405 and 40-72 set that was made by a gunsmith in Washington state. The challenge would be in finding the receiver extensions or finding someone to make them at a reasonable price. There has been considerable debate as to whether accuracy suffers in takedown rifles. I don't believe it has a significant effect on accuracy as long as the takedown is properly adjusted and not creating undue tension on the barrel. I've not noticed any difference in accuracy with my takedowns. In fact, the last antelope I killed was with a vintage 1895 takedown in 30-06 at 160 yards. That's at the outer ranges of what my eyesight will allow with open sights these days. Thanks a bunch for watching and commenting.
@brianlee6849
@brianlee6849 3 года назад
@@thecinnabar8442 you're welcome I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for all that information. If I did do a multi-barrel set it probably would be the 3006 family of cartridges. Actually the 3006 by itself will do just about anything a guy could possibly want to do so I guess it kind of would be a waste of money? LOL we just get to thinking that we need other stuff that we really don't need. Thanks again

The 303 British wasn't a very popular caliber for 95's here in the states, but I'm told most of the 95's in Canada are 303 British. They're more enjoyable to shoot than some of the heavy hitters in the 1895 lineup.

Good afternoon! I have a quick question on the Winchester 1895 takedown. I have had one for a couple years, but don’t take it down too often at all. It was manufactured in 2004 but the takedown design is exactly the same as the one in this video. On to my question: how tight should the lockup be? I have played around with various “tightnesses” by adjusting the screws on the takedown surface below the barrel. When I first got it, it was really easy to break apart by hand, almost to the extent I was anxious if it’s looseness when firing. I have tightened it a bit now, and although I can still twist it off with my hands, it is significantly tighter. Is there a “just right” when it comes to tightness for this platform? I see you went into a little bit of detail, but if you could further explain just how tight it should be I would appreciate that. I really enjoy shooting the rifle, but also want to preserve the action and the takedown surfaces. Thank you!
@thecinnabar8442
@thecinnabar8442 9 месяцев назад
From a mechanical standpoint, it needs to be tight enough so that there isn't any play in the barrel. I tighten them up just enough to take out any looseness or play. Any tighter and you can create unnecessary stress in the barrel and threads.

A warning about these take downs. They are not as strong as a solid frame rifle because the threaded portion of the barrel is not supported by the frame all the way around the circumference since 50% of the threads are milled away. Avoid heavy loads.
@thecinnabar8442
@thecinnabar8442 3 года назад

@davidgardner863
@davidgardner863 2 года назад
@@thecinnabar8442 ,, Yes. It happened to me with my ‘86 Winchester modern remake. It was an accidental overcharge. The pressure bulged the barrel at the weak point ruining both the barrel and receiver. Luckily the gun held together due to its strength. A lesson learned. I recommend if using smokeless powder in big cases like 45-70 to weigh the finished cartridges. If one is heavier than the rest it could mean an overcharge.
