That's their fault, because they use public domain licenses like MIT instead of GPL, so people get greedy and close the source. That's what happened when NextStep and macOS ripped off code from UNIX and never gave back.

I use Chocolatey in my Windows installations. I think I've found one problem though. The way I understand it, the Nextcloud client updates more often than the versions can be checked, which means the Nextcloud package is horribly out of date. They push a new version of the client before the old version has been checked, which *resets* the timer, and the versions never get accepted into Chocolatey before the new one comes out.

I got this from the Chocolatey website: Meta/virtual (*) - has a dependency on the *.install or the *.portable package - it is provided for discoverability and for other packages to take a dependency on. Portable (*.portable/*.commandline (deprecated naming convention)/*.tool (deprecated naming convention)) - usually zips or archives that require no administrative access to install. Install (*.install/*.app (deprecated naming convention)) - uses native installers, usually requires administrative access to install.

This is a new foray for Microsoft, and it's not Windows store apps - it's apps like the Brave browser and N++. You can't uninstall yet, but Microsoft will get there eventually. They should've waited until it had more features to release, but they are wanting to grow the available apps and get the word out. Overall, I think it's a step in the right direction, though it is currently half baked.

I've been using Windows for about the past 15 years and to me 'Chocolatey' seems ironically harder to use than the conventional methods. I don't keep all software up to date as I just prefer some older versions, for example when 'Libre Office' changed it's GUI I reverted back to the previous version as I didn't like the newer user interface, and using some older versions hasn't given me any security issues either, but I always keep 'Firefox' and 'Thunderbird' up to date. Browsing the Web for software, downloading and installing software gives me greater variety, flexibility and freedom.

Hmm, so, I have a small SSD for my C: system drive and Chocolatey does two things that irk me: First: default install is to the C drive under Program Data, no option to change during install so you have to do workarounds (this is not hard but annoying). Second: Chocolatey uses the package's default install directory choice unless you intervene in each install and specify a location in a non-trivial way (custom to each package installer type). This can be solved by subscribing to the paid licence version for $8 per month, FOREVER. That's anything but a linux attitude for a critical feature. If I have to wrestle this hard with Chocolatey for my (imo typical) use case, nah fam, I'm good. I'll just install shit the old fashioned way, at least I won't junk my system drive. Anyway, good video and I assume for most people with a big system drive this isn't a problem.
