There is another way to do this journey. South Western Railway to Staines South Western Railway to Reading GWR to Slough GWR to Windsor & Eton Central Also going to Paddington with the Bakerloo Line is faster than the Northern Line and Elizabeth Line.

Isn't there a shuttle that does precisely and only that? Although it would be difficult to do in the format as every train to Colchester Town goes through Colchester Station doesn't it?

@thanostheclub

@@quintuscrinis8032 Indeed. What happens, for those who don't know the area, is that, Sundays excepted, Colchester Town (St Botolph's to locals (it was called St Botolph's until 1991) has a single platform, but an hourly arrival and departure from London Liverpool Street, and an hourly (in each direction) call on the Colchester-Walton-on-the-Naze service. The station is situated at the bottom end of a triangular junction between Colchester and Hythe - i.e. it's a terminus station, and all trains must reverse. Coupled with it having only one platform, this creates a capacity problem. For the London service to fit in its path along the main line (it calls at every GA-served mainline station except Hatfield Peverel and Ingatestone), it needs to have a decent layover - but there also needs to be room for the Colchester-Walton service to reverse. Solution: to run the London unit to Colchester and back to free up the space. It's not entirely pointless though, as Colchester station (North station, to use its local name) is a long walk from the city centre, and uphill. The train is therefore more convenient. This, incidentally, is also why Sudbury services won't be extended until a new platform is built.

@anism5784
@anism5784 9 месяцев назад
I think there's been a misunderstanding here, because getting a 450 all the way to Weymouth from Waterloo is near impossible. The Weymouth service will always split at Bournemouth, with the rear unit either terminating or continuing on a slower pattern to Poole. If a 444/450 hybrid ends up doing this, the 450 is always the rear unit. In fact the only time I recall ever working and seeing a double 450 on that route is when the entire train terminated at Bournemouth due to engineering works between BMH and Wareham. Regardless, this isn't too much of an issue, considering they do the Winchester - Bournemouth route and do long distance services anyways. The pleasure of being short of rolling stock right....

Travel on all tube lines, all TfL (Overground, Elizabeth Line, DLR, Trams, etc) and all TOC that serve London (within Oyster Zone so with the exception of some intercity services EMR LNER, HT, etc). I don’t it before Covid but never filmed it😬

Re your comment at 4:40 I think it just doesn't take long to get used to a new line if it's the new fastest option for so many journeys. My sister moved to the docklands and suddenly I'm catching it every time I visit because Farringdon is a much better interchange than London Bridge AND it's fast AND it reduces time spent on the DLR and I could get used to that!

Personally I would have gone Windsor to Staines. Staines to Reading. Reading to Slough. Slough to Windsor. Avoids the cross London transfer so would be cheaper and would take about the same amount of time. Maybe slightly faster. Nice vid though :)
@quintuscrinis8032
@quintuscrinis8032 9 месяцев назад
Avoiding London isn't always cheaper for some reason. I have looked up the Bournemouth to Manchester journey amd for some reason the via London (3 changes) route is usually about 30% the price of the direct (one XC) train. :(
@robertmills6497
@robertmills6497 9 месяцев назад
@quintuscrinis8032 I used to work for SWR as a Revenue Inspector and as I said personally I would go via Reading as I hated travelling across London. The Reading route is more scenic. Can't comment on the price as I used to get free rail travel ;). I will.add that we were always told that for journeys with multiple permitted routes the "not london" option was usually cheaper. However in the case of your XC route London would be the cheaper option as the direct route via Reading and Birmingham is far faster and more convenient as there are no changes.

I’ve walked the journey between the 2 farnborough stations and I’d much rather any ‘pointless journey’, though it would be fairly easy to go between the 2. One way could be Farnborough to Woking, then Woking to guildford and from there to Farnborough north - or the other way, Farnborough to Basingstoke, Basingstoke to reading and then down to Farnborough north, but I’m sure you could make a much more convoluted route!

I think the idea of going from Penzance to Thurso, most southern to northern stations in the UK. This would happen by leaving at a set time near the beginning of the day and travel up to Thurso but as soon as you get to a station you have to leave within 5 minutes, it may take multiple days but it would be interesting how many places the rail network could take you if you have such a tight time to depart from a station. I feel as if this would be a very good RU-vid video and wouldn't be able to think about any other RU-vidr who could create this video concept really well.

You could do a quicker one which is W&ER to London Waterloo and then take the bakerloo line to Paddington then Paddington to slough then slough to W&EC.

Not sure if you're still in the area, but here's another pointless journey for London: West Hampstead (Underground) - West Hampstead (Overground) - West Hampstead Thameslink

So isn’t Windsor riverside to Staines, Staines to Reading, Reading to slough, slough to Windsor central - the train journey ? I mean nothern line isn’t a train right 😅? (Sorry)

It's the pointlessly large trains on the Thames Valley branches that gets me. There should be a small fleet of 153s for Greenford, Windsor, etc. Those bigger units should be sent west to where there are larger numbers of passengers on regional routes.
