I’ve been windsurfing on and off since the mid 80’s. This video really explains some of the challenges and frustrations I’ve had over the years. It’s such an addictive, exhilarating sport that is impossible to describe unless you’ve truly experienced it. The technology put into the new equipment has revived the sport for me. Thank you for making sense of an often overlooked topic. I can’t wait for this dreadful Canadian Winter to end and get back out onto the water🥶 Looking forward to some more tips. Cheers.

Hi Thomas, thank you so much for your awesome feedback! Im so glad that my videos are helping... Yes, the fin is definitely one of those small , often overlooked, aspects of the rig that can make a massive difference in sailing. Im glad I could help make some things a little more relatable and easier to apply with the video. I can just imagine, Canada must be soooooo cold right now! Goodluck and count down the days till you are back on the water!🤙

Wow, that was awesome, I have realised in my earlier days back in the 90's that the fin was very personal and ultra important, however, this video here really explain why this is so. Now I have a good understanding of how the fin actually works, and how lift actually works exactly opposite of what I thought, its time to buy some new fins with the new sails!! Thank you for the detailed explanations Karo, I'm really enjoying your channel!!

Great video and explanation. Thanks for that. I have 2 Gazoil fins and love the performance and don’t regret the expense. However, my experience buying them wasn’t stellar. One can with many pinholes and surfaces irregularity on the carbon. I returned it and It took Gazoil 7 months to send me a replacement that was done right. I’m sure COVID had something to do with that but I wasn’t impressed with their customer service. Great fins but not sure it was worth the wait.

Thank you so much for your comment and I'm so glad to hear that you enjoyed my video. I am very sorry to hear about your experience with Gasoil and that it took so long to get the new replacement fin. It is the first time someone shared such experience, so I do believe you could have been very unlucky with your experience in covid time. Im sure you gave them this feedback so that they have the opportunity to learn and correct this mistake for future. Thanks for your feedback, I hope that in future, if you were to order Fins again, you will recieve the top service guys have been enjoying from them as well. 🤙 Best regards and hope you enjoy the fin! 😎🤙

Thanks for staying positive. I certainly hope for Gasoil I was the only unlucky one! The experience certainly didn’t help making me feel my business was that important to them. Having said that, I realize that my “first world problem” awfully sounded unimportant when placed in context of dramatic circumstances many are founding themselves into because with the pandemic.

Hello Karo. I just found your channel and I've found it super helpful. Thank you very much. Especially because I've been thinking of picking up a couple Gasoil fins and now I know which one I want. I generally sail in fresh water on the Great Lakes here in Canada in sometimes patchy winds. So the Mega x is what I need. The closest dealer that advertises Gasoil fins doesn't have the Mega x on their website. Perhaps they could order it. I'm open to any suggestion though on how I could find and order them. Thanks again.

Hello, Thank you a lot for your video and all your advices, that’s very interesting. I have a problem with my board it’s a 112l freeride and I ride with a 6.7cam and 41cm fin. Normally everything is ok it should word but I feel that the fin isn’t enough big and I would like to know what you think about add 3 cm of fin. It’s a good idea or it’s just the technic I have to improve ?
@KarovanTonder
@KarovanTonder 2 года назад
Hi Alexandre, thank you for your message. When you say that you feel like you don’t have enough fin surface, what does that feel like for you? Do you feel like you don’t have enough grip or lift? A 41cm fin and 112L board is quite big for the sail size. I would go with a smaller board and fin to pair with the 6.7, like a 100L and 36cm fin. Adding more fin surface to a 41cm will only give you drag and reduce speed and control. One of my favourite combos is 6.2 with 98L board and 34 fin for stronger winds and 7.0 with 118L board and 38cm fin for lighter winds. I hope this helps!

@@KarovanTonder hello, thank you for your answer ! I fell like if I don’t have enough grip with the fin in the water when I push with my back feet to take speed. This never happened to me before because it’s a new board. The fin is too a little bit damaged at the end but not a lot. So I just want to know if I don’t have the technic to use it like this or if it’s really the fin you know.
@KarovanTonder
@KarovanTonder 2 года назад
@@alexandregarrigoux1861 it’s a great pleasure, I am so glad I can help! It sounds like it could be a combination of both the fin and technique. Once you have changed to a more suitable sized fin, you will find it easier to tweak your technique so that you become a little more sensitive to the pressure you put onto the fin. What kind of fin do your currently use as the 42? Is it Carbon or G10? The damage at the tip of the fin could have quite a big impact on the fins grip and performance. If it’s minimal damage to the tip of the fin, you could reduce the defect by lightly sanding down the damaged surface.
@alexandregarrigoux1861
@alexandregarrigoux1861 2 года назад
@@KarovanTonder it’s a G10 fin and the damage is really little. I will fix it lightly and try if it’s better. But I didn’t know that it was possible to skid just with pushing to much on the back feet with the right fin. So when I try to accelerate I have to push less with my back foot ?
@KarovanTonder
@KarovanTonder 2 года назад
@@alexandregarrigoux1861 this is a great tendency with G10 fins. Normally, when the fin is optimal you can put a lot of pressure onto it and it will stay gripped and accelerate the board. I highly recommend switching over to a 38 slalom Carbon fin. Carbon fins have a lot more flex than G10 fins and this will help to generate lift of the board instead of cavitation and spinouts. With Carbon fins you also have less surface resistance due to the thinner profile and effortlessly generate more speed with less pressure on the fin. With G10 fins, you can constantly be in a position of over powering the fin to try get more speed, due to its inability to flex and cause lift. Therefore you tend to end up spinning out more instead of accelerating.

There is a mightly large discrepancy between the two measures of selecting fin size. For example for my 71cm wide slalom board, I should be using a 37.5cm according to one measure (and I purchased one from Cape Sports in your neighborhood) and 41.5cm (when using the usual 7.5m sail for this board). But overall, good presentation. I started out by experimenting with fin size, by scooping up 2nd hand ones from pro-riders in order to gain some understanding of how fin choice affects performance. Just wish this video was out then...I would've definitely proceeded in a more educated manner.

Thank you so much for your awesome feedback! I'm so glad that I can be helpful. These are the kind of videos that I wish I had back in the day when I started out with race gear.. So nice that I am able to share my experiences form all the years. Yes for sure🤙... the fin size calcs are such broad guidelines, it really boils down to personal preference, sailing style, fin brand and also the location. My 72 wide 107 isonic I use mainly with my 38 and 7 or my 36 fin & 6.2 sail. For my 7.8 mainly 40 fin with my 117L. But this all changes depending on the tides and wind strength or whether I'm racing or cruising. It's nice once you hit that sweet spot where you feel like you've nailed all your personal favourite combos! I think that the formulas are good to use for someone who has no idea or framework to start somewhere and then streamline from there to the perfect sizes for him/her. Thanks again for the awesome feedback... So glad that I can help to make it all more relatable! 🤙

It is obvious that you are sponsored by Gasoil Fins, but it is not disturbing me 😊. I like the indebt walkthrough of all the aspects of fin choice. I have to admit that I don´t understand why all the windsurf equipment producers for boards, booms, sails and so on are not doing RU-vid videos in your style. It is nearly free of charge when letting someone who likes to speak with ease in front of a camera, and who has a high level of knowledge of a product, present a product. In my opinion the videos release each year with the new boards and sails from tropical spots are waist of a lot of money, because they don´t contain any useable information, when it come to deciding which board or sail you as an end consumer should buy. Even the recent videos from Tabou Boards with the shaper and Cedric Bordes are too short for me. I don´t understand why the producers do not have more interest in promoting their product in a deeper way. As a weekend windsurfer I am often making a buing decision on a very vague basis due to lack of profound information.

Thanks so much for your nice comment and your positive feedback!🤙 I'm so glad that I can help more people find comprehensive information on windsurf gear.. Its definitely a big lack in the windsurf world. I do it not only for my sponsors but also to help contribute to the world of windsurfing in a positive and constructive way with info that is not only applicable to my brands, but to the wider scope of windsurfers from all levels. This is exactly the aim with my channel... I am making the videos I wish I had back in the day. I only recently started my channel and I am already recieving such great feedback.. Excited to keep on in this journey to help more people with my experiences. Thanks again for your awesome message!! 🤙🤙

Karo what is the ideal Gas Oil Fin for a Simmer Monster 126 Sail range 7.1 to 9.6
@KarovanTonder
@KarovanTonder 3 года назад
For a sail range between 7.1 and 9.6 I would go for two sizes... for 7.1 up to 7.8 40 CHR X would be good. Going bigger from 8.6 to 9.6 I would go for a 44. For those big sizes, if you want easy planing in light winds go for the mega x model. With my 7 & 107 I use a 38 CHR X and with 7.8 & 117 I use a 40 CHR X...
