In 1931, the small town of Winfield in Putnam County became the site of an unusual archaeological discovery that baffled experts for years. During the construction of a new road, workers unearthed what appeared to be ancient stone walls buried deep underground.
The walls were found about 10 feet below the surface and extended for several hundred feet. They were constructed of sandstone blocks, each weighing about 500-1000 pounds, carefully cut and layered without mortar. The discovery was particularly puzzling because the region had no known history of advanced stone construction by Native American cultures.
As news of the find spread, it attracted attention from archaeologists and historians. Some speculated that it could be evidence of an unknown ancient civilization, while others suggested it might be the remnants of a fort built by early European explorers.
