Wingnut Wings' DFW C.V in 1/32 scale

This Wingnut wings kit was completed a few years back, but unfortunately, the undercarriage legs were not really properly supporting the model. I checked the instructions for the kit, which are still available to view on the Wingnut Wings website, to remind myself how the kit went together, and therefore, how easy it might be to deconstruct which would be necessary to access the rear undercarriage legs, which fitted into the fuselage sides but the attachment point was covered over by the lower wings. Practically, the only avenue was to remove both wings, interplane and cabane struts and the lengths of rigging. I also took the opportunity to remove the original colour scheme and replace it with something more interesting, in my opinion, using 'Modelstrip' paint-removing paste.
The replacement white metal undercarriage legs were sourced from Scale Aircraft Conversions and they are very good items, completely solving the undercarriage issue.
The kit is finished as a DFW C.V (Halb) variant, and these Halberstadt-built aircraft were often finished in a stippled mottle on the fuselage, sometimes the fin and rudder as well. Additionally, some were apparently finished with lozenge patterns on wings and tailplane. Halberstadt were known not to comply very well with the instruction to add serial numbers on the fuselage side, but this aircraft - C.3420/17 - was an exception. Known to have been assigned to Fliegerabteilung 15 (FA15), the unit was based at Subbat, in Imperial Russia (now in Latvia) in October 1917.
I hope you like the finished model.

One of life's great mysteries is why your videos don't have more "likes". You are an outstandingly talented modeler, and your videos are incredibly informative.

Thank you for your very kind comments. I don't have the answer to your question, for better or worse, but nonetheless I am pleased my work is enjoyed by yourself and others... 🙂

Once again your painstaking work delights. Your paint experiment was a triumph. I love the way you always choose WW1 subjects about which I know nothing/very little. Talk about a path less trodden. Which only makes Wingnut Wings' choices the more laudable.

Thank you, John... I am very pleased with the result of this kit. As you might imagine, to acquire WnW kits nowadays is a costly alternative to reworking one of their models. It's not without challenges, and I have perhaps one or two more I'd like to correct errors on, but I thought this would be a good starter. I was very lucky indeed that the kit came apart without any breakages, save the undercarriage legs of course, and many might think it's a long way to go, effectively, just to change those items. However, with an outcome like this, I think I've proved a point to myself, if no-one else. Even I'm not sure 'Wingnut Wings' and 'reworking' are words that should be part of the same sentence...! 🤣🤣

Hi, John... maybe the undercarriage issue should've been picked up, but i have to say I had a worse problem with the Albatros B.II kit, where the front left undercarriage leg bent inwards, leaving the wingtip just hsy of touching the desktop. So, if anything, that one had to be addressed immediately as it wasn't a good look at all. Anyway, all sorted now and admittedly, this kit is high on my 'like' list after the work put into it and the end result. Thanks for looking in and thank you for your kind comments.

Hi, Shaun...no offence, but you're not the first to think that... I was the first! 🤣🤣 My work sometimes has that effect on me, and doubtless others, but thanks all the same for your epiphany moment when you actually realised I was Rembrandt! That made me chuckle 😆 Thanks for looking in - much appreciated.

That paint -spatter technique is brilliant Paul. Thank you for sharing. I also like these camo colours compared to the one that came with the kit. 😊

Ronald, thanks again. I'm pleased you like the updated colour scheme. It's certainly a more interesting finish. The stipple effect was a tip from the instruction sheet, and I'm really plesaed with the way it turned out.

I watched this again.The solution to the camouflage;a unifying tone then the low pressure airbrush is a triumph. I always wondered if those white metal undercarriage replacements were worth it? I so enjoy your videos👍
@modcon8297
@modcon8297 12 дней назад
Stephen... thank you. I think the low pressure to apply the stipple is one of the best things I've learned in a long time. As for the white metal undercarriage legs... simply, yes they are well worth it. I don't understand why some of the undercarriage legs are as weak as they are. Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but this is the second WnW kit where I needed to replace the kit parts. No 'see-sawing' issues now... as steady as can be. I'm glad you like the video, too... 🙂👍

@@modcon8297 Thanks for that.My last WNW build was the Jeanne Stilhtaube .The undercarriage held up ok,but with the surface area of those wings,I did contemplate buying a set.Many of the reviews I read were a bit dismissive.

Paul, congratulations on an absolutely magnificent "rescue". I am not surprised because I've watched all of your previous videos. But I'm still impressed! Please tell me more about the paint set up for the brown and green on green camo -- specifically the needle size and pressure on your airbrush as well paint to thinner ratio for the brown and green paint. I'm not sure why I'm asking for this detail because even with that information I doubt I could come close to replicating what you've done. On the other hand, you've given me hope that I can fix the mistakes I've made on my current WNW build. Perhaps a better solution would be to pack up my SE5a and send it to Scotland with a plea: "Please fix this!". .😉 It's great to see more of your builds and I love that a good number of the recent releases have been aircraft from the Great War. All the best, and model on.

Hi, Mark... thanks very much for your comments. I may have to dissapoint you to an extent - I don't really keep a note of paint to thinner ratio, other than the 'keep the paint to the consistency of milk' school of thought. I usually add thinner into the paint container (I try to use the small tins of enamel paints), give it a stir and pour into a small glass. If it pours a bit thick, I add a small amount of thinner - turps or white spirit usually - and stir again. You'll have seen me testing the airbrush spray on paper in my videos before commiting to the model - it's a bit of a hit and miss routine. As for needle size, it's a 0.35mm needle, and I use a NEO for Iwata TRN1 pistol-grip airbrush. On this model, everything was sprayed at around 18psi, except the stipple where I reduced it to about 8 to 10psi. The weaker the psi, the more the paint will spatter as you saw with this model's colour scheme. It's actually a tip that was given by WnW themselves in their 'Late Version' DFW kit. As for your SE.5a, I'm sure you'll turn it around... a deep breathe, then on with the job. I look forward to seeing it completed... 🙂

@@modcon8297 Thanks Paul. Yes, I noticed you were using the pistol grip Iwata. The air pressure is very useful; you mentioned that you had reduced it to about 8 psi for the stipple effect which worked out very well. Cheers.

Emotional coaster ride over that camouflage Paul, I went from WTF (excuse my French) is he doing to OMG once you'd masterfully applied that stipples effect, an amazing and unique finish. Great result Sir. By the way are you from the Morayshire area? A old Elgin boy myself. Inspiring stuff - he says, looking at the WnW kits sitting pretty on the shelf. See you on the next build.

Hi... thank's for looking in. Yes, I often feel the same way about some of my modelling - WTF to (rarely, but nonetheless sometimes) OMG! 🤣🤣 As I mentioned in the video, I've never used an airbrush to do a stipple pattern, so there's always time in life to learn something new. I'm not from your part of the country, more south-west, nearer Glasgow. Morayshire is a lovely part of Scotland, though. Been up and around there a few times in recent years on holiday. I hope we can look forward to seeing your WnW kits on these pages when you get around to building them. Remember, they're like having a lot of money in your bank account - you can't take them with you when 'that' day comes, so go on, be brave... you didn't acquire them to leave them sitting on a shelf, did you? Take one off the shelf soon and build it; take your time and no need to rush, it's not a race. You'll be hooked in no time... 😉👍

Hi Paul, another excellent rebuild ! I have question, the wire turn buckles did you scratch built them or where they from the kit originally ?
@modcon8297
@modcon8297 21 день назад
Hi, Jeffrey... all the turnbuckles were removed from the kit prior to reworking it. I noted where each section came from so as to reinstall them at the same point when I got to that point. They were originally sourced from Gaspatch prior to starting the original build. Thanks for taking time to look in, and for your kind comments. Pleased you like the outcome... 😉👍
