No, a long pinky nail is actually more inconvenient because you can't control the tapping sound your pinky makes. You should be able to control whether or not your pinky makes a sound at all, from just a light touch on the top for placement or an aggressive thud for percussive effect. It just depends on what kind of sound you want to get
After the palm + nail attack, I usually pluck the either the 2nd or 3rd string before going into the thumb and nail attack playing. After that, it's all thumb and nail attack, no index finger Thanks for subscribing! Jon
You can, if that's what works for you. But I think it would be more efficient not to It's all about what you feel comfortable with. The pinky isn't necessary, but for me it is much easier to control the nail attack with it. I've seen people do well without it though!
Hi, The tap harmonics or the slap harmonics? For the tap harmonics, you just have to practice. Make sure you're hitting down right on top of the fret. Same thing for the slap harmonic, make sure you're driving all the force down into the neck, so that your finger "bounces" off. Don't use any energy trying to pull it away after hitting.
@soulofpekkle Hi! It's mostly in the M and A fingers. The sound should come mostly from the flicking of the fingers. Your wrist shouldn't be moving much at all. You want to flick your middle and ring fingers into the strings. You change the sound by changing the angle of your flick Hope that helps a bit, Jon
Ah, I had just commented on your "Slow Version" video asking for tuning and tabs, but nevermind I found them :P. Thank you for your help man, I've been wanting to play this song for months.
-depends on what's needed at the time -it will be more effective with both together -Might hurt for a bit, make sure you're not 'overdriving' your pinky into the top
@LillaLeebee Don't worry about him, not worth your time. Try to hit precisely on top of the fret, and don't make an effort to pull away from the fret after you hit. The slap should be a solid hit on the fret, let it naturally bounce off. I think the most common problem people have is trying to pull away quickly, which leads to weak contact with the fret
@MrFranciscoFidalgo Same - I tried alaska piks and they just felt really weird. I keep them pretty short, just long enough to play with a combination of flesh and nail. After filing them I use a product called MicroMesh, which is pretty much really fine sandpaper, to smooth them so that there aren't any notches that could hook the strings. There's more to it, like shaping, but I won't comment on that here. I'll send you a message
@Nevexity The only answer I have for that is it doesn't really matter. Which isn't much of an answer haha When I play Wings, I tend to focus on the G and B strings but I'll hit any string I need to if I want to get a particular sound. Play around and see what sounds you can get by hitting different strings and combinations
@MrFranciscoFidalgo hahaha thank you, your comment just made my day. Yeah I don't use those fake nails anymore.. I used them back them because I didn't really know how to take care of my nails and they kept breaking. Now I just use my natural nails
It varies, so all i can say is follow how i play it or listen to the music video and decide when to play what nail attack is middle + ring finger coming down, not index
@LogenKeller Hi Logen! The melody should be played with your index finger, so try to practice making it louder than your other fingers. It's mostly up-strumming with your thumb, down-strumming with your middle and ring fingers, and plucking the melody with your index. hope that helps a bit!
there are no palm mutes there, it's just strumming. the + means to hit the top with your palm while you strum I'm not too sure what you meant, if that didn't help let me know
@Drshanaynay First, learn to tune before you start raging. You're starting at an E, how does it make sense to tune up almost a whole octave to a high D? Tune down one step to D. I show you exactly how to do it in the video. If you were following it correctly and the string snapped anyway, that means that the string is either too old or your guitar has a nut problem. Not my fault, and I certainly won't die over it. Drop the immature comments. Doing so can only help you. Jon
Hi,Mr. Lou, Thank you for your " Wings ~you are the HERO~ Lesson " It helped me a lot when I learned this song. =D This song is the sencond song I learned after I learn guitar for a year. =D Hope you can make more video lessons about Kotaro Oshio or Hikaru Tanimoto or other guitar masters. Thank you very much. =D William Tsai
@SimplyLuo thanks for answering me again i watched ur video like 1000 times over and over again, i even watch it in fullscreen to have a better look on it so the final question u still didn't answered me : how many strings do i actually hit ? in wings u are the hero u even start immediatly after the mutes with the base rythm by nail attacking 2 different strings or group of strings sorry for asking so many questions - but i never tried so hard to learn one song :(
I'm sorry to hear that :( Have you experimented with some fingerpicks? Maybe try the Fred Kelly Freedom picks. They go over the finger and you use them like natural nails Keep at it, it's inspiring that you haven't given up!
@Nevexity Hey, I saw your video. A lot of your questions can be answered in my technique lesson video /watch?v=EK4L85-wSgM Nail attack isn't a mute. You flick the strings - your fingers shouldn't stay on them
@cpxphatboy Mm you're probably relying too much on the strumming movement of your hand, rather than the release of m and a. Try to pop fingers m and a out as you strum downward with your hand
this is a excellent tutorial, for years ive wanted to play like this, but im missing the tip of my right hand ring finger, i try alot to try this style but theres just things i cant do without that fingertip :\
Hello. Great tutorial! I have been a long time subscriber and fan of yours. You are very good. May I please have the tabs when you get a chance? Thank you! :)
Those are fake nails (KISS Active oval) that I got at walmart. I'm attaching them with glue dots, so that I can pull them off when I'm done playing Thanks for watching!
Eyy bro you are the best, at first I was like "He's not teaching us nothing :/" then I was like "OMG He's beast with that guitar" Thanks for this vid bro Thanks A Lot :)
haha posting alot on your vids, but you are helping me alot with this so here goes again xD When the melody comes in, i have a couple of questions. First, when you alternate between your nail attack and your index finger which plays the melody, do you also pluck the bass line when doing the nail attack or only during the index finger pluck. Also during the melody, when you nail attack, do you also hit the melody with the index as you come down as well? thanks again =]
thanks for the tabs, dont worry, u may feel unappreciated but we all appreciate you :) can i have the tabs for this song though? please and thank you :D i really like this song, and the way you play it sounds really nice :)
Hi there, I'm just wondering if you are using your index finger around 4:10+ as it looks to me as if you are also picking either the 3rd or 4th string while doing a nail attack? Or are these bars only played with thumb & nail attack? Thanks for the videos they are really helpful :) Jim
@Melifluction i tried, it can but it doesnt sound good. the nylon strings dont sound that clear. maybe you want to try Wind Song, its more suitable with a classical
How do I fix the problem: Melody not dominant? Because the melody is always coverd up by other sounds. Especially when the melody is on the third string.
@SimplyLuo I have the same problem, I use alaska piks but somehow I feel more comfortable playing with my nails, although on steel strings they will bend backwards and break. And do you do to your nails?
@SimplyLuo Does not have the relations to wait for you to have free time is sending for me Do not give yourself the too tremendous pressure Also has your teaching movie to be also good Is only does not look at the fingering
what is that pick that u put on nail?? I really need one of those. I'm really into Oshio's music and my nails are getting thinner by day. Can u tell me the name of the pick?
Hey SimplyLuo. I can't find the effects of the harmonic strum or something like that. I'm using a classical guitar now and is that one of the problem that I can't make the harmonic sound?
