For Mac Users (this may have been said already) I finally found a way to run WinISD. Wine and WinBottler are free programs that have been recommenced to run WinISD without the hassle of virtual machines, bootcamp, parallels, etc. But for me, both of those program wouldn't run properly but simply not opening, or quitting/crashing when trying to load WinISD under advance options, respectively. Nearly giving up, I found Wine-Stable (Wine-Stable 7 the most recent version, but Wine-Stable 5 is what worked for me. I could be wrong, but during install I selected both 32 bit and 64 bit as an option. After installing Wine-Stable 5, I am finally able to run WinISD on my Macbook Pro, without having to pay for a windows subscription. I hope this helps anyone with a Mac!

Thanks for your videos! Using WINISD I learned that my particular subwoofer will play louder in all low bass frequencies in a smaller(1cu ft) sealed enclosure than in a 1.5cu ft. ported one. The TS of my sub indicated that it leans more towards a sealed sub than ported so this makes sense. The math doesn't lie as long as all the subwoofer information is properly filled in! Also I had port velocities up to 30m/s at tuning with the ported which isn't terrible but definitely not optimal. I just wish I could share my graphs.

Your subsonic filter can greatly reduce air velocity which allows the use of a smaller port. I set my subsonic filter at the subs f3, but some also recommend setting at 2-3Hz below tuning, or one half octave below tuning.
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 3 года назад
That's a good point. I've got a video on setting an account infrasonic filter, I never thought about the impact the filter would have on port noise. But if you're cutting the signal you're going to be cutting the port noise as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iWRoIho7A7c.html
@7Logik
@7Logik Год назад
A few hz below tuning is still cutting audible frequencies , a ported enclosure still plays below tuning , my box is tuned at 33hz but I still get audible notes at 28hz no way I would cut it at 32 or 31hz......imhave mine set at about 20-22hz that's much more reasonable
@fd1596
@fd1596 Год назад
@7 Logik Well it also depends on the slope (6db, 12db, 24db, etc.) applied power, type of subs, enclosure size, and type of music you're playing (Rock, Hip Hop, Rebassed, etc.). The crossover filter doesn't just abruptly cut off frequencies, but it rolls them off at a given rate depending on the slope. So with a 33Hz tuning if the filter was set at 30Hz with a 12dB slope you would still be able to play 28Hz with no problem. The lowest recommended is 1/2 octave below tuning which would be 24.75Hz at 33Hz tuned.

@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 3 года назад
I am not an expert on amplifiers, but from what I gathere damping factor is a way to express how well an amplifier controls the cone movement. It's one of those things that's important up to a point. Like everything else with audio there are diminishing returns.
@sittdogg
@sittdogg 3 года назад
@@DIYAudioGuy appreciate the reply. Its one of those im not even sure if or how they can measure it. Strage thing I've noticed when playing with the meter is that seems good damping seems more efficient with spl. Ya you can gain a db going to half ohm or whatever. But at the cost of 2x the amperage draw and sloppy cone control. but also not the case always.

Part of the reason being that the new one's auto fill for the T/S parameters screws up sometimes. Manufacturer will have one spec one way and winisd will say its wrong. Winisd says the ports need to be 69cm long, does this mean I need 2x 69cm long ports or is it 2x35cm ports? The length of the port doesnt change in Winisd based on the number of ports used so I dont know if I need the total length of all the ports combined to be what Winisd recommends or if they all need to be the full 69cm length.

Hey I've got a question about winisd. I've been designing and comparing boxes for my next trunk build and I'm a bit confused. Does/can winisd account for port placement? There's a big difference in port+subs facing forwards compared to only one or the other facing forwards when squeezing two 15s into a trunk. As I understand it the air pressure/sound wave coming from your port will synchronize or become in phase with the pressure/wave coming from the front of your driver and give you a bass boost. Is there a way to know or graph when these waves become In and out of phase? Does this effect still take place when your port is not facing the same direction as your subs, would it change the frequency at which the waves become in phase?
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy Год назад
WinISD assumes that you are in a very large room and it does not provide any information about port location. The box size is net, meaning it does not take into account port displacement.
@Live_Loud

So you even go below resonance frequency to tune box low? Is that efficient?
@DIYAudioGuy

When you tune it lower the peak SPL will go down. There is a trade-off between efficiency and low frequency extension for a new given box size.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A9oVxddE2GA.html

Hey DIY Audio Guy, I need help! A buddy of mine works at Kipsch and he gave me a beefy 15" prototype. He didn't have the parameters on hand, but I have the DATs v3 so I wasn't that concerned. I entered everything in WinISD, no issues, but is there an ideal frequency that you tune a home theater box to? WinISD popped out a tuning frequency of 18 hrtz in a box size of 5.3 cbft. That seems awfully low to tune a box to. I've done this with a few other subs, but they were each tuned to 24 and 25 hrtz, but most videos I've watched on port tuning, and WinISD, most people seem to be setting their frequency in the 30's. I was wondering if you had any advice on what you would tune a 15" to. I understand it depends on the bass curve and all that, but you surely have an opinion on what you'd tune your home theater subwoofers to. Ok, don't hold back, hit me with both barrels,...lol.
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 4 месяца назад
For home theater, I like to tune the enclosure as flat as possible with as much low end extension as I can get while still keeping it flat. That typically means a very low tuning frequency and a very big box.

I tried to follow along with an Alpine SWS-12D2 but the volume never gets auto populated and no response graph shows up. :( I am sure it is because I can't find all the fields required. Ah, if I edit the driver in the project and set Vas it graphs for me, not sure why it doesn;t bring the Vas from the driver I created. This seems much more difficult to use than bassbox pro granted I have never used bassbox pro for much so IDK if they are similar in functionaliity.

You'll need to find a way to measure the TS parameters, the date and audio dats is the way to go. You can pick one up from parts express. If you use my discount code diy5 they will cut you a little price break. Without that information you are just guessing. May as well just throw it in a half cubic foot box to into about 40 hertz.

Do i need a high pass at ~25 hz before my subwoofer? Is it ok if my amplifier simply has a Infrafilter included and then those frequency wont even come to the subwoofer? Also does it make sense to filter those frequencies before they come into the amplifier in the first place? At the moment my diy subwoofer doesnt have that filter but my amp does, im wondering if i should be worried.
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 2 года назад
If your amp has an infrasonic filter (some call it a subsonic filter,it is just a high pass that keeps the lowest frequencies out of your sub) then you don't need any other infrasonic filter. I prefer to use the crossovers in my DSP because it is easier to adjust.

The conventional wisdom is to tune a bit higher or go with the sealed enclosure if you like that kind of music. My personal preferences to tune for a flat frequency response and a low f3, that way it sounds good no matter what music you have to be playing at the moment. But that's just me.

That's pretty common. First check to make sure you have the units correct. Out of the box the software is looking for metric. Then the specs online are often times a hodgepodge of metric and freedom units. After that see if you can get the software to Auto calculate. If you click in the next field and start typing immediately it will not Auto calculate. You kind of have to go slow and pause in between steps.

I have drivers from Parts Express and Madisound. Both sites have volume suggestions and the F3 for sealed and ported boxes. Is this good or I should see what winisd comes up with? You say "play around till you get what you like for music you listen to". A video explaining the green line in relation to sound would be awesome!

Both of those sites typically use bass box pro and design for high fidelity. I typically means that they're shooting for a flat response with a lot of low end extension. Those designs will do a good job getting low, but they're not going to be very efficient.
