Correct observation, YourPlug. Also, may I include personally, southpaw boxers such as me who study one of the most underrated champion boxers, Ronald “Winky” Wright are watching and studying this awesome fight. Ronald “Winky” Wright is fundamentally sound, strong, has an excellent jab, and is defensively responsible (peek-a-boo/high guard defense). Eventually, Jermaine Taylor’s (excellent champion) weakness of keeping his hands down caused him to get knocked out by King Arthur Abraham. Not a coincidence, but Arthur Abraham utilized the same peek-a-boo/high guard defense. Abraham’s vicious power resulted in JT getting knocked out in the 12th round of their bout in the Super Six.
I believe Wright won 115-113, but his strategy in the shockingly dull 12th cost him the bout. Regardless of how well the fight had gone through 11, Winky was experienced enough to realize that in the champion's backyard he needed to take last round convincingly.
Lol damn you had me at the first sentence. Then at the second I was like ok I got it now. Then the third and fourth and then BAM the fifth and I'm like all confused now
Fair draw... I never seen winky get hit that hard.... if Taylor had started with Emanuel Steward ? ... he would have been a different fighter.... much more effective use of his talent...
@@matthewzizzo4586 I had it a draw too when I watched it live. Wright wasn't comfortable with Taylor's power in second half of the fight. Taylors problem was he had terrible stamina. Great fight
This was one of the greatest middleweight fights in modern history. Both these guys are phenomenal fighters, hall of fame caliber. Each round was so competitive, tough to score - Draw probably right decision
Wright is severely underrated.. was avoided his entire career. Not until he was in his mid thirties did the top guys fight him 😤 still I think he edged this fight. Beat Mosley 2x and Tito. Had a great career but could’ve been an all time great
@@trilltaz3448 Wrong. Winky rejected it despite all the talk of him being an avoided fighter. Taylor was the champ with the titles and offered him a 60/40 split which was more than generous but Winky demanded 50/50 or nothing. Winky didn't want the smoke period.
Very underated fight. Winky was and still is a hugely underrated champion. What a shame it was that the rematch was never to materialize. One fight, both guys in their prime, a draw (fair decision though I had Wright winning 115-113) no rematch 😫!!!! Loved both these guys as fighters. God bless them both.
@@shaunbei Taylor looks huge, well compared to Winky and what power, I love Winky he's got a great Defence and he's always coming forward it's a pity he's not got that Middleweight power like Taylor but if he did he'd be a monster!
Thanks for this classic boxing War its crisp clear sounds 👌 the whole program is a real good copy...and missing my idol manny was the whole knowledge on BAD ..manny was a walking history course met him in paterson nj at a Lou duva roast
Which is surprising because in 1994 Winky lost his first title shot against Julio Cesar Vasquez by going out and fighting. He was ultimately overpowered by Vasquez and dropped 5 times. In some of the rounds Winky was landing his jab and straight left, but when he didn't hurt Vasquez and Vasquez started walking through Winky's punching and knocked Winky down once in the 2nd, 7th, 9th and twice in the 12th. In those rounds Winky started slugging with Vasquez. Had there been more time in the 12th Vasquez would've stopped Winky. Here though, Winky took some big punches from Taylor and never backed down and never appeared hurt.
Winky was known for his legendary defensive. He kept getting better later on in his career. He was a very bad style fighter for many of the top 10 fighters in the divisions he fought in. Even was avoided for more then 10 first years of his career for that reason. He was a nightmare
Too me, I scored the first 115-113 for Winky but I was ok with a draw. Winky should've been proud of his performance as he took it to a bigger, stronger much harder punching opponent. He needs to realize that if he did win it was close and by taking the last round off he cost himself the fight. He would've won on the Melvina Levthan scorecard and won the fight. I guess coming with a draw in a second fight he thought he clearly won, maybe he thought luck was going to be on his side.
I remember watching this and thinking to myself, "Both of these guys will never be the same". It was so beautifully violent to watch. You could make an argument that Kelly Pavlich was the biggest beneficiary of the beatdown Wright inflicted upon the young Taylor. (And that was why I had money on him to win a year later). And on the other side, Wright was never hit this hard, by a naturally bigger man. Not by Mosley, Vargas or anyone else. This was really the end of his run as a Top P4P candidate. It was brutal, it was breathtaking, and God bless both of these two warriors and keep them safe in the future.
Only reason this fight is so underrated with views is because both men, more so jermaine taylor were not highly promoted. It has to be against a big name for people to view it. But true boxing fans no this fight was as big.
Taylor landed some good shots, but a lot of the shots he was getting credit for were taken on Winky's guard. It goes to show that simply throwing more punches is usually more eye catching than defending them. It's a shame that judges don't have a way to see what truly lands, and what doesn't. This was another Winky defensive masterpiece, but he was relatively unknown compared to Taylor at the time, and Taylor had the more appealing style. Personally, I love watching Winky. He was a walking textbook of how to utilize a high guard in professional boxing. He probably had the most versatille high guard I have ever seen. The way he used subtle adjustments with his guard to catch punches, and parry while using head movement only as a last barrier of entry made his defense like a walking fortress. That's not even considering his counter punching which was more offensive than most because he usually counter punched while moving forward instead of waiting and setting traps. Such a unique fighter. It's no wonder why so many guys avoided fighting him, and it's a shame. He easily could have been one of the absolute greats of the sport, but he was still great non the less.
Not only 2 of the very best fighters in the sport at the time, but also 2 of the nicest. . . Yes, I know about Taylor's outside the ring issues, but he was always a gentleman in the ring and in the interviews, always respectful. He was troubled, for sure, but deep down he was a nice dude
Jermaine Taylor was never in boxing fights that were boring. Did you see him vs joppy? Did you see Taylor vs Pavlik? Did you see Taylor vs bhop? Taylor vs froch? Taylor vs spinks?
@@matthewanthony4606 family i didn't even know lol i just remember loving this entrance from years ago one of the best songs to come out to for a fighter
@@outlawboxing1923 Me too been watching some old boxing fights mainly Floyd Mayweather. And then all of a sudden this fight popped in my head along with the ring entrance…
I scored it for the Taylor first time watching it live and I still do after rewatching it. I had it 8-4 for Taylor. At best Winky did win 6rds and it was a draw but he didn't beat Taylor. Too bad Winky turned down the rematch and a career high payday.
Winky's career high payday was against Trinidad ($4 million). This was his 2nd highest purse though at $2.25 million and next highest was his fight against Hopkins at $2 million.
I had jermain 6rds-5rds 1rd even....if winky wouldve pressed the issue more n the middle of the ring like he did when Jermain kept goin to the ropes couldve been better results for winky but he didnt take advantage of jermain bad habits he developed n the ring
I've noticed that with Winky he tends to take it easy in the 12th, but tbh I thought Wright done the best work & threw the better Punches in the last Round
Wow, just realized that Taylor fought 3 (reigning/former) undisputed world champion in 3 divisions: welterweight Cory Spinks, Super Welterweight Winky Wright and Middleweight Bernard Hopkins. No boxer could claim that.
the guys back in the early 2000's were warriors. Even a guy like Taylor who was not the greatest showed tons of guts fighting guys like Hopkins, Wright, Pavlik and then going up to super middle and taking on Froch, Abraham etc.. and most of the fights were brutal wars. These spoiled "champs" of today are all about strategy to make money and keep their 0's
Wonderful fight and great sportsmanship between these two fighters. Yeah its definitely a draw, Taylor literally punched his way to the draw, he wasnt as accurate as Winky, but he just outworked Wright (in late round it was obvious that Wright was very tired). And thats a shame that there was no rematch, apparently Taylor figured out that he cant pick the key to Wright defense. Still Ronald "Winky" Wright is very underrated and undeserved forgotten boxer
I don't care what anybody says, Wright won this close fight. He should've fought harder in the 12th Round (because of those stupid Judges), but he won. Taylor is unique. He has all of the tangibles to be a great fighter, but none of the intangibles. Not even the great trainer Manny Steward could fix him.
Winky should have pressed Taylor whenever he was in the corners & fought actively in all the rounds. Never leave it in the hands of the judges or anybody especially in a competitor's home town. The rule by & large is that u must defeat the champ convincingly! Winky gave away the last 3 rounds by coasting and Taylor should have gotten the decision b/c he was the agressor...
Both great fighters,I think Taylor is real good fighter but I seen to many flaws in him, don’t get me wrong I appreciate a good fight but I’m sure he beat Hopkins cause B-Hop,was at the end of his time I don’t think Taylor could have beaten B-Hop if he was younger,, Jojo dee
Судьи старики были ничего не видели ,все удары тэйлора пришли райту в блок в перчатки по плечам по поясу и шее. Посмотрите на тэйлора от джеба глаз заплыл какая ничья ,это грабёж
what a robbery, wright clearly won 1-5, Taylor won 6 and 7, wright got 8, Taylor 9 then wright 10-12, very clear wright blocked 90% of Taylors shots and landed very clean jabs on Taylor throughout the fight and pushed him around the ring, defence striking and ring generalship very clearly went to wright for majority of the fight, and if u believe in compubox stats, wright landed 60 more punches whilst throwing 60 less shots, including more powershots. A big thing people aren't realising is that in round 12, winky landed a few shots at the beginning of the round then nether party actually landed anything whilst Taylor proceeded to get a few shots blocked and dodged, people act as if winky was inactive when in reality he held onto the round by defending himself after landing the first shots.
@Daniel Vazquez I respect your opinion but I'm going to leave it like this short and simple you can't win a fight if your getting hit three four punches to one no matter how good looking that one punch is and taylor took a lot of power punches look at his face and the the glove thing you brought was lame winky just had good defense fundamentally sound
