The Royal Institute of British Architects awards the House of the Year annually to the best example of a one-off house designed by an architect in the UK, celebrating excellence and innovation in home design.
Green House, Tottenham, London by Hayhurst & Co
Tucked away down an alley in London’s Tottenham, this exceptional five-bedroom house blurs boundaries between inside and outdoor spaces. A ‘riad’ style central atrium, bamboo and sliding polycarbonate screens, reference the greenhouses that once stood on the site, while double-aspect views to the gardens and a roof terrace further emphasise the connection to nature.
A simple block form plan and creative use of sustainable materials inform the aesthetic, providing generous space and light within the modest budget.
"Part of the responsibility of designing someone's home as architects is to really take the time to understand how they live, what their needs are, and how they want to live everyday." -- Claire Taggart, Associate Architect, Hayhurst and Co.
"One of my favourite elements of the house is the constant connection to nature, be it through the front sliding doors, windows, or the roof light. We've always got a connection with what's going on outside. Essentially, the gardens just feel like extensions of our living space." -- Tom, homeowner.

Efficient, clever, innovative and for once on a budget leading to some great solutions. 👏🏻

What a DREAM. 👏My partner and I just watched this-and then immediately rewatched. The space, the flow, the light (my god, the LIGHT), the vibe. I didn't know I needed an atrium but here we are. A lot of recent architecture (I'm looking at you Grand Designs) has felt so same-y, like we're seeing the same concrete box over and over again. This house feels like an evolution of that formula; the ingredients are familiar, but they've been shaken up, reinterpreted, and painted green. Truly a breath of fresh air. *Really* fresh air given how many plants call it home. Obsessed.

A lot to like, but how energy-efficient is that glass ( or plastic?) ceiling? Couldn't they come up with a more ethical solution. I can't imagine that much transparency is kind to the planet. Ronchamp is dim on purpose and it works. I would like too see viable alternatives. Still the house thinks outside the box, accomplishes a lot and I would love to have it as a neighbor.🙂🙂❤️❤️💯💯

I'm sure that staircase and those balustrades would give a lot of people ptsd. Not for me.

How did you resolve the building control issue with the kitchen and bedrooms fire escape not being protected?

only 2 storey so escape windows offer an alternative means of escape, thereby not preventing a more open plan layout

This is a remarkable home. At first I was suspicious but I was quickly convinced of its brilliance. My one critique is with the staircase. The homeowners chose to paint the staircase green. Normally, I would've chosen black but let's go with green. This hue of green isn't correct. This is more of a "puke green" or "prison green." An altogether better green would be "celadon green." Done correctly, celadon green is the most beautiful color of all. A great celadon has a beige putty base with equal parts green and blue, and balanced out with warm grey. A great celadon is confounding, impossible to pin down as to what color it actually is. Most importantly, celadon is super elegant. Celadon has a pulse. It breathes. Celadon is a color best expressed over a thousand years in Chinese porcelain. My other critique about the staircase is with the vertical spindles. They are too thick, again making them feel like prison bars. I would've preferred to use cables, given the staircase a lighter, softer feel and would've better blended into the architecture. Other than the staircase, this is a perfect home. Astonishing.

I wonder how will it look in 50years

potentially exactly the same, because all the sheet material cladding only last for about 15 to 20 years, so they'll need to re-clad the building a couple times before it reaches 50 years.

There should always be a budget....I mean did they have a billion pounds to spend, oh it was more? a 100 billion pounds? I mean really, so pretentious. Good job on the house though!
