Congratulations to Shannon and Bernice! What a wonderful surprise! Jen, your quilt is gorgeous with such great contrast! You know what they say? “If you can’t see it from the back of a galloping horse, it doesn’t matter!” So Hang it up in your house, maybe above eye level, like off a balcony or something high. And you’ll just get tons of ooohs and ahhhhs! Now as regards metallic thread, I don’t have a lot of experience with it; but I have used it some and it’s beautiful. I read that for metallic thread you need a needle with a large eye so there’s extra room for the thread to go through, w/o so much abrasion. And you MUST sew at a slow speed! 😂 🐢 Also, it depends on how the spool is wound. Some threads must have the spool sideways to keep from twisting the thread; and some spools must be upright. I can never remember which way is which, but you can google “thread spool adaptor” and it will bring that up and there are videos that explain it. Hope that helps! 🤗 Jean, your octagons are also SO beautiful! I hope you show us the “proper” way to make them that your research discovered. I like how you made the half-hexies to fill in along the edges. It’s going to be so pretty when you get it all together! I’m sure the donuts 🍩🍩 helped to mend the friendship! 😂🤣😆💞 You guys always crack me up! 😝 Edited to say, I forgot to mention: what if you wash them and make the edges of the snowflakes fray and fuzzy up like chenille? Maybe it wd add texture, and make the stitching less noticeable? (Jen, make sure you use a color catcher, if you do, bc of the red and navy! They really do absorb a lot of color!) 🌷

I always love it when Jen shows up. The friendship you two share is so sweet and it's more like sister's. Love the snowflakes. Jen your snowflakes are good and I too like to go fast but I'm learning to go a little slower. I have Jean's voice in my head saying just go slow, slow down. And I also remember when you started quilting Jen and your free motion quilting. And Jean's face when you showed her. On your little sewing machine. Congratulations to the winners.

This is a good example of the difference of just "getting a quilt done'" vs constructing a quilt block with patience and enjoying the process--be it a slow one at times for intricate work

Jean your snowflakes are gorgeous, Jen yours is very beautiful. So they are a sample of very experience verses intermediate quilters. Big pat on the backs for both of you.. Jean your fairy print fabrics surely are beautiful. I did a Christmas quilt using a fairy print in white and ended up coming up short and ordered it through Etsy with delivery and interest rate $$42 is what it cost me for a yard, lesson learnt . Thanks for sharing your projects, and Jean enter yours in the quilt show. 👍❤️🙂

Fantastic snowflakes for both of you! I want to learn how they are done. I do prefer the smaller snowflakes but the way Jen has hers applied. Jean you are a fantastic quilter but too experienced and fast for me. I still have UFO’s but I do stop and watch TV. Would like to see the back of yours Jean to see how the different colors. I’m like Jen, want to get it done. Beautiful friends!

I love the way you two interact . It reminds me of the way me and my best friend were when we were together. Sadly she is no longer with me . I just finished making a hexagon quilt for my youngest son. I too did a quilt as you go but I did it in rows then sewed the rows together. I love how it came out. I love when Jen comes to visit. I think her snowflakes are pretty and that she at least tried. Yours are so beautiful and inspiring and I hope you do enter it into the quilt show. There is a thread called Kingstar metallic thread that I use to machine embroidery but haven't tried on the sewing machine.

Jean! Your quilt is definitely quilt show worthy. I've never been to a quilt show, but I've seen pictures. Using fairy frost fabric is perfect for snowflakes! I've used similar fabrics for a quilt. I loved the way it pieced together, and quilted. Mine was nowhere near as beautiful, but the ladies at the local quilt shop loved my quilt. I've only been in the local County Fair, years ago. I got a blue ribbon! Still, not as pretty as your snowflakes. ❤

Jenn’s quilt is beautiful! Great choice of fabrics! I really like the snowflake idea. Did you use “tear away” on the back of the snowflake to make it easier to use the metallic thread? You should keep talking about free-motion quilting. That is what you do. It encourages me to try.

The two of you are so entertaining and hysterical...love it! Congratulations to the winners!!

When I used invisible thread or metallic thread, I used cotton/poly thread in the bobbin. Then I put interfacing on the back of what I was using it to applique. I had to go slow, and I adjusted my tension down. It was a pain in the backside! I gave up and just matched my thread to each item I was putting on the banner. It was for church, and our youth group made the design. They did a wonderful job. I finally got it sewn. Banners are sometimes on the wall or hanging from a pole. You can see through if it's not against the wall. It says you can sew with it, but I think maybe hand sewing. I had only 3 days to get it put together! I'm not a fan of invisible or metallic thread either.

Both quilts should be entered in the show. They are so pretty. I use a thread stand for metallic thread and make sure the thread is in horizontal position. Use a 90/14 needle for metallic thread and 60wt polyester in the bobbin, worked good for me. It is tricky so I hope one of these tips helps Jen. And you do have to sew slower. I’d like to see how you made your snowflakes Jean. Loved seeing you both tonight and enjoyed laughing along with you.

Trick for metallic threads 1 larger needle 2 lay the spool in a container so it rolls 3 a small piece of styrofoam which you have made a small hole with a needle thread the thread through the styrofoam piece before threading the machine. Hope it helps I have as much fun as you both Lovely snowflakes ❄️
