So crucial to make sure their water doesn’t freeze. I have a couple heated doggy bowls. Works wonders. Thanks for sharing!

I think the dog bowls are the next thing on my list! I love my nipple Drinkers, but I would like to have constant water in a bowl for them to dip their beaks into! Thank you for watching!

I bit the bullet last winter and bought premier 1's heated chicken waterer (after years of not having one) and it was the best money I've spent! I love how it keeps the water clean and warm. I don't like cold weather, so it was worth it to me!

It keeps you out of the cold and your chickens hydrated! Definitely worth every penny!

I use a motorcycle tire And I have it full of bedding in it and yes it does freeze slower but here in Southern Michigan it’s gets pretty cold so I bring fresh water to them. God bless. 🙋🏻‍♀️♥️🇺🇸

Great info. We have just recently decided we have to do something different than the exact same 3steps you were doing. We ended up getting a heated dog bowl but I was just going to share with you... we were deciding between the dog bowl or a bird bath warmer. The bird bath warmer seemed like a great idea also

Oh, I didn’t even think of that! That’s a great idea! I appreciate you sharing that!

I use electricity. It's a 15-watt metal pan that sits under the waterer. Works good. Althouigh we are gonna get down to 10 degrees here in Northern AZ this coming Thursday. It will not work as well on that night.

Is that pretty cold for you over there in Arizona?! I feel like that’s so cold 😂. My parents go there every winter, but I think they are southern.

I paid electrician to run power out to my coops but I still have 7 cords going to each coop. The mudd drives me crazy. So much rain in NJ last month

We have the exact opposite problem, we just got our first real snow of the season here in Utah. Went from the wettest year on record last season to one of the driest. Our lakes are definitely going to struggle. BUT.. that does mean less mud 😂

I tried solar panels but they couldn’t keep up with the demand of the chicken water heater, the heat lamp and light. So I ran a power cord from the house to the chicken coop (about 60 meters). Here in Canada, it regularly gets down to -30 C (-22 F) or colder (it’s getting down to - 33 C (-27.4 F) this week and will get colder as we progress into Feb, prob down to -40 C (which is where the scales converge, so - 40 F). In the previous winter it got down to -48 C (-54.4 F). So as you can see our situation is a little different. And things get real very quickly. We have to not only be concerned that our chickens’ water doesn’t freeze, but that our chickens don’t freeze! I have an electric water heater that creeps the water from freezing. The water is in a wide shallow flat bottom container (a large bowl, essentially) that has a lot of surface area touching the heater. Metal conducts heat more efficiently than plastic. I change the water every couple of days. If I didn’t have that heater, it would be one solid block within hours! The nice thing is when it warms up, there is a thermostat on it thy friend it off. I have the cord clad with metal conduit so the ice don’t chew it. I also have a heat lamp and an LED light bulb in there, too!

Holy cow, that is SERIOUSLY cold! It sounds like you’ve found a system that works for you though so that’s good! I the coldest temperatures I’ve ever felt were -27F and it’s hard to describe the feeling of temperatures that low. Good luck up there!

This was the best, most informative and complete video I've seen on the subject!! We live in Texas and we regularly go weeks without power and running water so this was super helpful :) Where can I find that rubber bowl? Thanks!
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead 5 месяцев назад
Thank you, I appreciate that! Ummm.. If I remember correctly they are all over Amazon if you search “rubber dog bowl”! I’m pretty sure they are made for dogs originally and then people started using them for chickens and livestock!

I bought a bird water bath heater. The first one was a dud as soon as it got below 23 degrees. So I bought a different one called the Auxco Chicken water heater and it was marketed for chickens and other livestock as well as the birds water bath. It works great. I used a sautering tool, however you spell it, and made a notch in the rim of my 5 gallon bucket for the cord and made sure it was in the back of the bucket but it's still covered by the lid so nothing gets into their water. I bought one of those plug cover thingies and plugged it in. We have gotten down to 21 degrees so far and everything is unthawed.

Kinda glad I don't have to bother with frozen water bowls! The tradeoff is that 120* summer, though. Not fun.
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead 5 месяцев назад
Oof, I’ve never felt heat that hot 😂. 110 is probably the hottest I’ve ever been in and it was absolutely miserable.
@tonyrichmond9428
@tonyrichmond9428 5 месяцев назад
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead the difference between 110 and 120 is WAY worse than I'd have expected. Turn your oven on to about 300, then open the door with your face about a foot away. That's what it feels like going outside, lol. Only bonus is that to get that hot it needs to be really dry, so as my chickens walk around in their pool, it evaporates pretty well and in the shade it feels pretty nice. I need to take a temp this year and see what the differential is, but it felt really nice on my hands, and the chickens spent most of the afternoons in it.
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead
@WhitepepperFarmshomestead 5 месяцев назад
@tonyrichmond9428 I bet that helps a lot! I can’t even comprehend heat like that. Do you do any gardening out there? I’ve always been curious how people garden in a climate like that. I would imagine rather than taking the winter break you take a summer break?
@tonyrichmond9428
@tonyrichmond9428 5 месяцев назад
@@WhitepepperFarmshomestead oh yeah. The summer is pretty brutal, but folks can hang shade cloth to help. Some plants do really well, like peppers and watermelon and apparently loofah and armenian cucumbers really LOVE the heat. A good strategy is to plant heat LOVING plants for shade so they soak up all the most intense light and heat. The water transpiration also helps cool the immediate area by a few degrees, so the heat TOLERANT plants have a chance. The plus of such a hot summer is that we get two really nice growing seasons on either side, which I plan on taking advantage of again this year. If you want to see what it's like for us, check out "Growing In The Garden" here on RU-vid. Angela lives about 40 minutes from me, and I learned a lot about how to cope with thrive in the AZ low desert. Of course, my garden is still maturing and she's a wizard. I have an aquaponics style growing bed attached to my mini duck pond. We don't eat the food that comes out of it because, you know, duck poop, but it actually kept some tomatoes alive for an entire year. >115 summer,

Hi, I like to ask about your automatic Chicken coop door please. I have eyes on the same coop door you have, but I have a fully grown Buff Orpington. I am not sure if that door is big enough for them? Thank you for keep posting.

Hi! We actually have an adult buff Orpington as well and she fits through it just fine! Even our larger jersey giant fits through without issue!
