Winter Creek Largemouth Before The Snow Storm

This was a quick trip with lots of largemouth caught, right before Mother Nature dropped a blanket of snow. In this video, we cover "The Ethic of Exploration" as a means to find great winter pools, how important a notch in a steep bank is on a winter pool, the signs of hypothermia and what sorts of behavior builds good karma on the river.

I commend your clean-up efforts, also your hike/drag-ins, that takes a lot of effort which most will not do. I agree with the scouting and "putting in the time" mantra, especially for river fishing. I fished my local river dozens of times last year, and really started to pay attention to learning it. There are so many subtleties and details to watch for, high or low water levels, vegetation changes, underwater structure, inlets/outlets, etc. I have 3-4 more rivers, miles and miles, I plan on exploring this year on my kayak, and cannot wait for ice out. I truly enjoy river fishing more than lake fishing now!

Now that's taking your fishing up a notch. Trash clean up, landing improvements...and no electronics needed to find cold water feesh. But no smallmouth in that much current?

Great video Jeff! I can remember one winter fishing trip where it occurred to me that I needed to get off the water while I still could do so. It was a cold day but I had fished on colder days. That particular day it felt like the breeze was knifing right through the drysuit. Perhaps I was more tired than usual or my diet in the preceding days was inadequate.

I’ve had some tough days in the river in the winter but you’re 100% correct, you need those days to help figure out the spot within the spot.

November fishing is so important for knowing if you’re in the right pool in January.
@kytrails

I love it man! Especially when u break-down the dynamics of the spot! It helps me to answer the “why?”, ie, Why did it or why didn’t it hold fish and where were they located? and at what water level were they they located there and “why”, “why”, “why”. I have a lot of “why’s” and “where’s”. I suppose the successful answers or solutions to the “why’s”and “where’s” do lie in a lifetime of exploring. I love exploring, I think that’s why Ii enjoy fishing so much, but free time is very limited these days and i have a huge exploration gap to fill, but your efforts are helping me close the gap fast! Thanks to your videos im starting to recognize the visual characteristics of a good spot, by watching the foam and the leaves and how to “scratch-it” to determine the subsurface environment and systematically find the “eat-spit”. Wow, I’m up too late but I’m gonna watch one more or at least start it. Hope you had safe travel on those deliveries and I’m looking forward to the next video in the dead of winter! I hope you don’t change a thing and keep them coming!

Awesome content as always. Do you think you could give the jig weight (or close to it since we modify the molds) that you start out with and a roundabout flow number of the water your fishing? Might help with initial setups for some people. The flow is sometimes hard to gauge on video as we’re only seeing a +\- 20’ section. Here’s a tip I figured out- if you keep a small piece of cloth saturated with Reel Snot in a ziplock and rub your rod guides with it and the ice will have trouble sticking to them. Keep the hammer down man! 👍🏻

A day of fishing is so therapeutic whether you get skunked or catch a boatload. Still a wonderful day. What knife do you have on your chest? Looks like a TKell with the ring on the end. TKell is American made 100% and veteran owned if you need a good all around knife. Love the video as always Jeff. Always learning when I watch. I’ve fished when I would have to hold my eyelets to get the ice to melt so I could reel in😂. Still great days. Thanks for all you do Jeff much appreciated

The inflatable kayaks are super stable. Ever try and drown a beach ball? That’s the physics of compressed gas fighting to stay up. It creates a more stable platform than rotomolded kayaks.

Jeff, I belong to the inflatable fb page you admin and am interested in the 12” Kuda. Watching you drag it around, how durable is it really for portaging/dragging? My PA14 360 is proving way too heavy for the skinny waters and rough brush,rocks,etc that we have to travel through to get to good water.. I just can’t afford a huge rip in the boat when miles from a takeout.
