We just traded in our 2019 ioniq ev for this. It's only used for commuting to work 1 hour away, so the range isn't a problem (though it would of course be nice with more range), and all the tech is so much more advanced than in the ioniq! The biggest upside for me is the sound system in the advance model, as it's probably the best sound system I've heard from a modern car! A bit lacking in the mids, but low-mid bass, and trebble is wonderful! Makes the 2 hours of driving every day so much more fun!

The Fiat 500e is shorter and narrower than the Honda, but has a 42kWh battery pack. Surely nothing holding back Honda from adding an extra 30% to the battery. Their internal research must be showing that range is the most off-putting aspect of the car.

Damn thats less miles than I was expecting. Exeter services into Cornwall on the A30 at 5 degrees used to get us home (86 miles) at 60mph in a 27kw Soul and thats bigger and shaped like a brick!! An interesting and balanced review. You can’t ask for any more. It is certainly going to be a very marmite car in my opinion, so tech advanced on the inside it really is fantastic, yet from the outside it is so 70’s and 80’s retro style. The round headlights and the very flat front scream that era. I suspect the manufacturers have deliberately left themselves room to bring out larger range models but start off with milking the hardcore fan market first. A fascinating car.
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 3 года назад
Thanks for the kind words. I have nothing to hide with these reviews - I mean its mine, I bought it so just reporting my findings (without trying to be intentionally supportive or negative - negative has been for years the first port of call for any 'normal' motoring journalist reviewing EVS (not saying I am a journalist either!). Its certainly a fun car, and that I can't get past, its a massive hoot to drive and is fun each and every time I get in it - will it wear off over the next 47,000 miles....we shall see - thats the point of the reviews (along with to see what faults if any rear their head). Honda were quoted that they certainly had no immediate plans for increasing the battery size in the Honda E as it was design intentionally as a city car. If true I hope they mean 12-24 months when they say 'immediate' lol. This thing is ripe for having full on performance version, the rear end is setup for it. At 152bhp this thing is already really powerful and with 50/50 weight distribution it handles really well. Imagine a 350bhp version, its would be simply outstanding (especially if that would coupled with double the range). This is a brilliant review (not on functionality but on design aspect) by Frank Stephenson: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iere3DPQhkg.html

Everybody seems to forget that when the gasoline powered automobile first came on the scene you could not go very far with them either because there were no gas stations.In the United States where I lived you had to go to the pharmacy in England they call him a chemist to get gasoline. It took about 50 years in the United States anyway for there to be enough gas stations for it to be fairly easy to go on a long distance travel.

Can I suggest 2 things? 1) a lavaliere mic you can clip to that jumper and then plug into your phone. Clap your hands a d then use that second audio source to sync to your video. You’re impossible to hear whilst driving. 2) Get audio toning software - Mauvio for iOS or SoundSoap for pc/mac - to remove the pops, reduce the booming base and make the audio pop more. Otherwise, very happy to see you making vids again! (Although I’m still gonna buy an ID.3...and that jumper).

I do have a set of rode micro mics that might do though rather than bringing the studio sennheiser G4's (trouble is they are actually much better so it would bug me). It might actually be better to get just the gopro9 attachment which allow an ext mic to be attached...but I am not going to spend to much time trying to make it perfect - this channel certainly doesnt have the income to support even more time devoted to production quality, its supposed to be done on the fly. (for the usual production quality checkout: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yggx-Qeq3qA.html - part of a mini series we did) Let me know how you get on with the ID3! Whens it coming? Only just found your videos, I love Honda and after a few years of having kids and buying a house etc I somehow ended up with an Smax (which I hate) and a 206 (which was free). I planned to change the 206 for a 5yr old civic estate this summer, and then the Smax for something smaller for the wife in 2 years time. A promotion at work has given me a company car (petrol Octavia estate) but I’d still love our 2nd car to be a Honda. I’ve always said unless they updated the e to do 200 miles of maybe go for a hybrid jazz or hrv, but on reflection, and from watching this video, my wife maybe drives 40 miles a week maximum, so a Honda e could well be perfect for her... love the few videos I’ve seen, will subscribe and watch more, and long for the day there’s a Honda on my drive again... is the insurance on the e more than a jazz or hrv? The car is worth a lot more, so unsure if insurers want a higher premium...

Good video. As for the car I do like it but with a range like that for me it’s just not enough. As a car for the large town or city great in short a second car but it’s very expensive as a second shopping car. For me the sweet spot on cars like this is between 150 and 200 miles winter/summer. Cars such as the new e 208 and corsa. Basically in the winter just about every time you go out in the car your going to have to charge it back up. And as for turning the heater of and on to stretch the range is crazy. Did you do this in you petrol cars no.
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 3 года назад
Yeah if you pinch point is range, and range at 150 upwards on a single charge then this is certainly not the car for you!
@cyclist3969
@cyclist3969 2 года назад
A range 80 miles in inadequate, the car needs a range extender IC engine, a small 125 cc engine of 10bhp either driving a generator or mechanically connected to the road wheels by a clutch would be adequate to permit steady cruising at 50 - 60 mph and make a great difference to the practicality of the E
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 2 года назад
Totally depends on usage and design - Honda have said from the very start that this is only a city car, despite this I have been using it rurally (just hit 10,000 miles - see: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zy1vesbigG8.html ) and have had no issues. Now if you want to do 320 miles a day in winter (a one way trip of 160 miles to work for example) then that would in mean in the middle of that journey each way you would need to stop of 1.5hrs to charge in each direction. This car is not meant for long journey (although I do have followers that seem to use it for that!)

We have come on a long way since the 2014 days of the LEAF. Now having an EV that can do 150 miles easily in winter and 200 in the summer this really needs to be the minimum to Average Joe Bloggs interested in EV's. I look forward to your blogs though like I watched every one of your LEAF ones back in the good old days 👍

I think they might hit a £10k or lower price point for 200 miles in 5-10 years. Only need something like a Dacia (ICE being £5999) and the market for Cheap EV's will be on fire. I could google it but comments also help with YT algo. Is AC charger 1 phase or 3 phase?
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 3 года назад
UK houses are commonly single phase (industrial is 3 phase), so home charger at mine is single phase. As for the 'public' charger in this video, I am certainly no expert, but found this short paragraph that hopefully helps....but left me slightly confused lol, as it appears its AC and DC....so cant quite answer your question - I assume in theory the charger could be then providing both AC AND DC oddly? "Combined Charging System, or CCS, is a competing rapid DC charging standard designed by Germany vehicle manufacturers. The CCS connection combines the inlets for AC and DC using shared communication pins, so the vehicle coupler is formed of a Type 2 plug with 2 DC pins below. When AC charging, only the top part of the inlet is used. The 2 DC pins are normally covered. When using the CCS system, the larger coupler uses the whole inlet. CCS is capable of charging vehicles at 80-350 kW. "
@gorazdnovsak3705
@gorazdnovsak3705 3 года назад
@@IanSampsonRLO That is only explanation how CCS is working and what it is... It is not talking about AC charger... One way you might figure out is to look at bigger pins in a upper socket. Do all have metal on them or not. Are button 2 without. If so it is 1 phase for sure. If they have it it might be 3 phase...

6:50 i see you have no air con or heating on to demist the windows to conserve battery. Not a dig but just a thing i noticed on e car reviews a few are in eco mode doing 55mph and no heating to get an extra 5 miles range, it's a shame they don't have a safety margin when nearing 5% that you can put the car into a lean run restricted speed mode thatll double or triple your predicted range to 0% battery as that imo would go a little way to kerb range anxiety if your near your destination and just need to get as much range as possible from the last 5%.

Given what a Zoe bought for less than £18k in 2017 could do I am not really impressed but it seems all EVs cost more now. I did several 120 plus mile round trips in the Zoe where charging wasn't easily available at my destination. I would have soon become fed up with it if I had to charge on those days out and for me at least the Honda is a big chunk of money.
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 3 года назад
Yeah as per video if range and price are pinch points in the purchase decision this is NOT a car for the buyer in question. My brand NEW Zoe 41kwh fully owned (not battery rental) was just £16k + £250 for reversing camera. (Although, even at that, people complain its expensive compared to an ICE! Cant win!). But - this Honda is a feature rich car, with some commenting the range is not an issue to them, nor price - they love the look and the tech and it suits their needs. Cheap EV it ain’t!

@@IanSampsonRLO my Zoe was metallic black so cost a little more. I sold it to a dealer in July for £13600 so over three years and 20k miles it lost £4k. Given that fuel and servicing costs were negligible it cost way less than a Clio would have over the same period. I reckon leasing would have been about three times the cost of outright purchase because it assumed high depreciation at the time. Can anyone explain "solid state batteries"?
@ariel_kirkwood
@ariel_kirkwood 3 года назад
In today’s “liquid state batteries”, a liquid or polymer gel is what connects a battery’s cathode and anode and completes the battery’s internal circuit. A solid state battery is one that uses a solid material to do the same thing. Solid electrolytes were studied in the 1800s, and solid state batteries and designs have been developing since the 1950s. The main barrier to solid state battery adoption is its cost relative to today’s best lithium ion designs. We can build them with EV capable sizes (Bollore built its BlueCar with a 30kWh lithium ion polymer battery using a polymeric electrolyte in 2011) but there’s a reason Bollore runs its cars in larger scale car sharing schemes and doesn’t (as far as I know) sell them to individuals (yet?).

I can’t really see a good case for the Honda e. The utility is just too limited for the price. We have a Tesla Model 3 as our main car and a Seat Ibiza as our second car. The Ibiza is fully loaded, cost £17k, has room for four adults and a boot that can take three suitcases. It can handle long UK holiday trips, 200 miles plus, with ease. I’m a big ev fan but an 80 to 100 mile one costing £25k plus with a minuscule boot really doesn’t make sense to me. Also I think suggesting a range figure that required you to run the battery to zero potentially gives a false impression to prospective buyers. How many will risk turning up at a public charger with zero % remaining? My real life experience has been that about half of them don’t work, and many sites only have one charger present. Unless the charging companies start to get their act together and improve the reliability of their chargers and increase the number at each site, we are going to run into big problems in the next couple of years. Anyway, back to the range, I would have thought to give a range figure it’s sensible to quote 100% to 10%. Sorry if that all sounds negative - I do enjoy your videos.
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 3 года назад
Its compounded by the fact that all makers quote a range figure thats higher than you can really get as well! I mean they state on the Honda E 134 miles....well its 80 in winter. Or you could get the Zoe much cheaper (I got my brand new 41kwh Zoe for £16k - does ~180 in summer and ~150 in winter - and charged on economy 7 its around ~£2.50 for a charge).

Plenty of useable EV’s out there. It depends what you mean by usable, for example my Renault Zoe 41kwh is more the adequate for the majority of drivers. The Honda on the other hand not so much so - its more niche and unique

It's a fantastic looking little car but its pretty much useless because of the range. The range is so small you have to own a another car. So if someone is willing to pay the money for an little electric novelty they're probably wealthy so why would they go for a small Honda E in the first place? It's a shame because a bit more range this car really could have cracked the market as the latest popular EV
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 3 года назад
City the milage is 100+ which means pretty useful. Rural (like me) its more challenging, but keep in the loop (subscribe if you haven’t already!) as loads of miles to be covered in a short space of time, which will answer if its useful. It’s actually the recharge time that counts quite a lot in the equation. If it really could charge at claimed 100kw - that would be mental, approx to 80% in just 15 mins ish...but yet to be seen!

@nickieredshaw7835
@nickieredshaw7835 3 года назад
Does Honda e have heat pump ? As heard cars with heat pump make only 2-3 % difference on range on or off . On the Zoe we leave heating on 22-23 c on auto all the time so since it’s got cold . If headlights are led it won’t make next to nothing different.

@@IanSampsonRLO I need an honest 100 mile range at 0 degrees C at highways speeds. It's a pretty modest request. The rest of the Honda E fits my requirements nicely - I'd like a small, reasonably priced, stylish rear wheel drive EV. My LEAF with a 55-ish mile range under those conditions provided a few nail biting experiences. I was fortunate enough to have a charger at the 45 mile destination point. When the lease was up, the car went back - it was a great little car, just not a good enough little car.

Contractor Safety Checklist (which is basically just a fancy term for electrical safety for anything running off mains electricity), i.e. electricity and water shouldn't mix. Ok, I presume the procedure is such one isn't supposed to handle these connections when the power is on, but there doesn't seem to be anything preventing someone from touching them when it is. In which case I think even an IP67 rating doesn't guarantee the splash water on the outside isn't electrified. Just looks like a dangerous situation to me, not just from a shock hazard, but also from a liability point of view. I work in this field and I really, *REALLY* wouldn't want to the be the one who signed his name on that charger's certificate and, thus, basically, said: "Yup, that's fine".
@IanSampsonRLO
@IanSampsonRLO 3 года назад
From my understanding nothing is live (of any significant voltage at least) until the ‘handshake’ is complete between the onboard charger and the unit on the forecourt/wall at home.
